Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the World From the Earliest Period to the Present Time, Vol. 4: Collected and Arranged From the Best Authorities The extent of the American continent and the islands connected with it is as follows: North America, square miles; South America, Islands, Greenland, and the islands connected with it lying north of Hudson's Straits, may be esti mated at total, square miles. The American continent, therefore, with its dependent islands is fully four times as large as Europe, considerably larger than Africa, and about one fourth less than Asia, if we include with the latter Australasia and Polynesia. It constitutes about three-tenths of the dry land on the surface of the globe. A considerable portion is condemned to per petual sterility by the rigor of the climate. If we draw a line from the head of Cook's Inlet, in latitude on the west side, to the straits of Bellisle on the east, so as to pass through Fort Churchill, on Hudson's Bay, we shall cut off a space 'rather exceed ding one million and a half square miles, which may be considered as incapable of cultivation. At the south extremity of America, a small tract, extending 200 miles north of the straits of Magellan, though far within the limits of the temperate zone, is nearly in the same condition. These and the summits of the 'andes are the only parts of the American continent which are rendered incapable of cultivation by the severity of the climate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the World, Vol. 4 of 4: From the Earliest Period to the Year of Our Lord 1783, With Particular Reference to the Affairs of Europe and Her Colonies At the period when the peace of the Pyrenees put an end to the contest between France and Spain, [A. D. 1659, ] which was a kind of appendage to the thirty years war, Louis the Fourteenth was in the twenty-first year of his age. Cardinal Mazarin was still at the head of the government, and now administered it in peace. The last civil war, if the commotions of the Fronde are to be called by that name, having been extinguished, he was neither employed in pursuing any immediate schemes, nor in looking forward to any farsighted plans of policy; but was performing the farce to the great tragedy which was going on in England. Louis the Fourteenth was moved by ambition to the pursuit of a particular species of greatness, which he displayed in the course of fifty-four years, [A. D. 1661 - 1715, ] the period during which he reigned without a prime minister. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the World, Vol. 2 of 4: From the Earliest Period to the Year of Our Lord 1783, With Particular Reference to the Affairs of Europe and Her Colonies Whence came that intellectual spirit, which dwells in man, and whither does it depart; that spirit, which measures the distances of the heavenly spheres; which resolves the apparently simple elements of Nature; which embraces the knowledge of all past time; governs the opinions and destinies of nations; and exercises a powerful influence on remote futurity? Man has stolen the lightning from the heavens; he has gained a dominion over the sea; he has measured the paths of comets, and traversed the lofty regions of the air; and yet, who is he? Whence is his origin, and what is the end of his being? To these inquiries, our senses make no reply. Abstract and metaphysical arguments, without end, have been devised, repeated, and compared; some more complete, others, less perfect; and yet, no result appears to be more certain, than that all is yet involved in doubt. Book excerpt: A lively and engaging narrative history showing the common threads in the cultures that gave birth to our own. This is the first volume in a bold series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. Susan Wise Bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history. Dozens of maps provide a clear geography of great events, while timelines give the reader an ongoing sense of the passage of years and cultural interconnection. This old-fashioned narrative history employs the methods of “history from beneath”—literature, epic traditions, private letters and accounts—to connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled. The result is an engrossing tapestry of human behavior from which we may draw conclusions about the direction of world events and the causes behind them.
