This new history of Leeds covers all the main political, social and economic developments of the city: The Harrying of the North devastated the surrounding area in 1069; the Civil War saw a battle fought in the town itself; cholera and typhus epidemics raged in the nineteenth century; the building of the Middleton Railway in 1758 established the oldest railway in the world; and Richard Oastler, the Factory King, launched the campaign for the Ten Hour Bill in the Leeds Mercury. Due emphasis is given to the place of the wool textile industry, the principal industry until the twentieth century. The story is brought right up to date, as are recent changes in the townscape. An intriguing look at this great city's remarkable history.

Book Synopsis A History of Leeds by : William Reginald Mitchell
Download or read book A History of Leeds written by William Reginald Mitchell and published by Darwen County History. This book was released on 2000 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the fastest growing cities in Europe, Leeds has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a hamlet of thatched buildings at a crossing point of the River Aire. The Cistercians of Kirkstall helped its growth; then the market town of Tudor times became, in succession, the world capital of the woollen cloth industry, the home of Victorian 'high-tech' industry and, more recently, a major financial centre. This book tells the story of the people of Leeds and its transformations over the past millennium, in an entertaining and enthusiastic style.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over three-quarters of this book is devoted to genealogical records of the early settlers of Leeds, Maine. The main section contains biographical and genealogical information regarding more than forty of the town's leading families. Additional noteworthy chapters include the records of marriage intentions from 1801-1901 and the genealogy section containing Leeds men who were living at the time the book was published (c.1901) and listing their children, parentage and paternal and maternal grandparents. The text's narrative history covers: the founding of the town, its location and natural features; aborigines; churches; schools; "Professional Men;" some "First Things;" a list of town officers spanning 1801-1901; and military records for the American Revolution, War of 1812 and Civil War. Appendix I contains the historical and genealogical information of six additional families, three of which were headed by African-American Revolutionary War soldiers. Appendix II consists of two lists of early settlers. The first is a "Schedule of Settlers on Townships on Pegyscot [Pejepscot] Patent: Littleboro' [Leeds]" between 1781 and 1794, from the original at the Maine Historical Society. The second list of Leeds settlers dates from around 1800 and is copied from Pejepscot Claim papers in the Androscoggin Historical Society. A lot map for the town of Leeds, drawn by the surveyor for the Pejepscot Land Company in the early 1800s, enhances this edition. The new master index will give the researcher easy access to the treasures within this book. This every-name index includes women's maiden and married names, and also contains subjects and towns. This work is illustrated with forty-five portraits and town views.

Book excerpt: In the course of its extraordinary history, the Jersey Devil has been exorcised, shot, electrocuted, declared officially dead, and scoffed as foolishness--none of which has had any effect on it or the people who persist in seeing it!This mysterious creature is said to prowl the lonely sand trails and mist-shrouded marshes of the Pine Barrens, and emerge perioducally to rampage through the towns and cities of New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania, leaving many communities in near-hysteria.The authors show that while a few appearances have been out-right fraud and others have likely been the result of mass hysteria, this creature has been seen by enough sane, sober, and responsible citizens to keep the possiblity of its existence alive and tantalizing.Over 50,000 in print
Book Synopsis The Genesis of Industrial Capital by : Pat Hudson
Download or read book The Genesis of Industrial Capital written by Pat Hudson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the sources of finance used in the Yorkshire wool textile sector during a period of rapid expansion, considerable technical change and the gradual transformation from domestic and workshop production to factory industry. Although there has been much recent debate about capital investment proportions and their sources nationally, there is no other study of a region or section capable of testing various hypotheses current in the general literature of the British 'industrial revolution'. How was capital amassed in proto-industry? How important were merchants in building factories? What role did landowners and the local banking sector? What influence did trade credit and fluctuations in trade credit have on the expansion of productive enterprise? How important was reinvestment and what determined both profitability and the extent to which it was ploughed back into business? The answers to these questions have value for all students of the industrialisation process, whilst the detailed material on Yorkshire is of interest for local study and provides a model of the questions which could be asked in other similar regional studies of the future.
