Book excerpt: This book introduces the local history practitioner to the world of maps - the special character (and appeal) of maps as an historical source, why they are invaluable in local history research, and questions that must be asked of them. The historical background to map creation in Ireland is outlined, with details on the major classes of cartographic and associated material and the repositories wherein they may be found. The Plantation series, travel and county maps, maps as part of published reports and journals, military mapping, estate and property mapping, and maritime maps, historic Ordnance Survey and Valuation Office maps, and more recent OS mapping, including the 1:50,000 Discovery series, are discussed. A section on essential map reading skills, including matters of scale, representation and accuracy, will help equip the researcher to explore this coded world. Step-by-step guidance for starting out to locate maps relevant to one's study area is provided. Case studies of working with maps in local history are offered as practical examples of what can be done, and guidelines for map-making are also included.

Book excerpt: The Knights Templar In Britain examines exactly who became knights, what rituals sustained them, where the power bases were, and how their tentacles spread through the political and economic worlds of Britain before their defeat at the hands of the Inquisition some two hundred years later. Founded in the early twelfth century, the mysterious Knights Templar rose to be the most powerful military order of the Middle Ages. While their campaign in the Middle East and travels are well-known, their huge influence across the British isles remains virtually uncharted. For readers interested in Medieval History.

Book Synopsis Consolidating Conquest by : Padraig Lenihan
Download or read book Consolidating Conquest written by Padraig Lenihan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking and controversial new study tells the story of two nations in Ireland; an Irish Catholic nation and a Protestant nation, emerging from a blood-stained century. This survey confronts the violence and enmity inherent in the consolidation of conquest. Lenihan contends that the overriding grand narrative of this period was one of conflict and dispossession as the native elite was progressively displaced by a new colonial ruling class. This struggle was not confined to war but also had cultural, religious, economic and social reverberations. At times the darkness was relieved throughout the period by episodes of peaceful cooperation. Consolidating Conquest places events in Ireland in the context of three Stuart kingdoms, religious rivalry within and between those kingdoms, and the shifting balance of power as monarchy and commonwealth, Whitehall and Westminster, fought for ultimate power.

Book Synopsis Ireland and the War at Sea, 1641-1653 by : Elaine Murphy
Download or read book Ireland and the War at Sea, 1641-1653 written by Elaine Murphy and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2012 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the mid-seventeenth century maritime battles between Ireland, England, and Scotland, showing them to have had a dramatic impact on the overall conflict. The conflict on the Irish seaboard between the years 1641 and 1653 was not some peripheral theatre in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. As this first full-length study of the war at sea on the Irish coast from the outbreak of the Ulster rising in 1641 to the surrender of Inishbofin Island, the last major royalist maritime outpost, in April 1653, shows, it was instead the epicentre of naval conflict with important consequences for the nature and outcome of the land conflicts in Ireland and elsewhere. The book provides a clear and comprehensive narrative account of the war at sea, accompanied by careful contextualisation and a full analysis of its Irish, British and European dimensions. This includes the strategic importance of Irish ports, conflict between organised navies and formidable bands of privateers and pirates, the adoption of new naval technologies and tactics and the relationship between conflict onland and sea. Moving beyond traditional accounts of naval campaigns, it integrates warfare at sea into the wider dimension of political and economic developments in Ireland, England and Scotland. Extensive use is made of a wide range of archival material, in particular the High Court of Admiralty papers held in the National Archives at Kew. Dr Elaine Murphy is Lecturer in Maritime/Naval History, Plymouth University.

Book Synopsis Making and Meaning in Insular Art by : Rachel Laura Moss
Download or read book Making and Meaning in Insular Art written by Rachel Laura Moss and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This collection of papers explores the artistic achievements of Early Medieval Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England and their continued resonance down to the Late Medieval period. Twenty-three interdisciplinary studies focus on a range of subjects from the world-famous Book of Kells to less well-known objects, such as Anglo-Saxon decorated pins. The presentation of recent discoveries and innovative research methodologies shed new light on familiar artworks, while more theoretical deliberations challenge traditional approaches to the study of this area. Almost without exception manuscripts, metalwork, sculpture and architecture are examined against their broader contexts--geographical, historical and cultural--illustrating the complexity of influences that contributed to the making and meaning of Insular art"--Jacket.
