Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ohio in the War, Vol. 1: Her Statesmen, Her Generals, and Soldiers; History of the State During the War and the Lives of Her Generals The work owes its origin to Mr. William H. Moore, the senior partner of the house bv which it is published. As early as in the summer of 1863 he visited me in Washington to arrange for its preparation. Its main features were then agreed upon, and he straightway set about procur ing such facts for it as were then accessible. I desire now to add that but for his zeal, courage, and energy the work would probably have failed of completion. It was a part of the contract made by Mr. Moore on behalf of the publishers, that they should procure for me all books, documentary matter, personal statements, etc., necessary for the preparation of the work. In pursuance of this arrangement, they have employed persons of apparent fitness for such service to visit the armies in the field, and, since the close of the war to wait upon officers of regiments, Generals, private soldiers - upon any one, in short, who might be thought able to contribute any fact not yet known or cast light upon any occurrence hitherto ill understood. The Civil War was a tragic and bloody rebellion in American history claiming the lives of nearly 700,000 soldiers fighting for the Union and The Confederate States of America. It remains the bloodiest war fought on US soil. Many of the Union Generals in this book served for years in the United States Military and were commanders during the Mexican War and later served during America's Indian Wars. After the Civil War, some Generals served in the United States Senate, the United States Congress and other state offices. Several served as President of the United States. These men were true patriots in every sense of the word. At least 67 Union Generals died during the Civil War. Some died in combat; others died from their wounds and associated illness. All served and all sacrificed. All carried visible and internal wounds for life, and all bled in some fashion. Those are the dire perils of war and all who served, deserve respect and their place in history. Since a picture is worth a thousand word; each image in this book speaks limitless words of courage, duty, honor, and country. These brave Generals and their soldiers saved the Union.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ohio in the War, Vol. 2 of 2: Her Statesmen, Her Generals, and Soldiers At the close of the War against the Rebellion, the State of Ohio had in the National service two hundred regiments of all arms. In the course of the war she furnished two hundred and thirty regiments, besides twenty-six independent batteries of artillery, five independent companies of cavalry, several companies of sharp-shooters, large parts of five regiments credited to the West Virginia contingent, two credited to the Kentucky contingent, two transferred to "United States Colored Troops," and a large proportion of the rank and file for the Fifty-Fourth and Fifty-Fifth Massachusetts. Of these organizations, twenty-three were infantry regiments furnished for three months at the outbreak of the war, being an excess of nearly one-half over the quota allotted to the State. One hundred and ninety-one were infantry regiments afterward furnished in obedience to the several calls of the President - one hundred and seventeen for three years, twenty-seven for one year, two for six months, three for three months, and forty-two for a hundred days. Thirteen were cavalry and three were artillery regiments for three years. And of these three-years' troops from Ohio, over twenty thousand re-enlisted as veterans at the end of their long term of service - to fight till the war should ebb out in Victory. In these various organizations, as original members or as recruits, the State furnished to the National service the magnificent army of three hundred and ten thousand six hundred and fifty-four soldiers. The quota was only thirteen regiments. The Government would not then accept more, and so the State put them in the field on her own account. The Government finally paid them. In this statement I follow throughout the figures of the United States Provost-Marshal-General in his final report to the War Department (Vol. I, pp. 160 to 164). Nearly all the State. have industriously reckoned up larger totals - obtained by counting those who paid commutation money as so many soldiers actually furnished, by treating the veteran re-enlistments as so many new troops, by enumerating their citizens enlisted in the organizations of other States, their sailors, etc. Much may be plausibly said in favor of counting most of these different classes; but, on the whole, it seems to me fairer to reject hem, and to accept the figures on which the War Department acted in apportioning the quotas and enforcing the draft. This gives a less imposing appearance to the statement of our troops, but it is perfectly free from any possibility of being charged with the unwise exaggeration to which a morbid State pride has sometimes led. The Adjutant-General of Ohio, however, in his report for 1864, reckoning most of the classes we have rejected, had swelled the number of troops furnished by the State (up to December 1, 1864) to 346,326. - Report, p.47. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An excellent contribution to Civil War literature . . . . [A]n excellent reference resource. Civil War buffs in particular will greatly enjoy this book.” —ArmchairGeneral.com The Civil War Generals offers an unvarnished and largely unknown window into what military generals wrote and said about each other during the Civil War era. Drawing on more than 170 sources—including the letters, diaries, and memoirs of the general officers of the Union and Confederate armies, as well as their staff officers and other prominent figures—Civil War historian Robert Girardi has compiled a valuable record of who these generals were and how they were perceived by their peers. The quotations within paint revealing pictures of the private subjects at hand and, just as often, the people writing about them—a fascinating look at the many diverse personalities of Civil War leadership. More than just a collection of quotations, The Civil War Generals is also a valuable research tool, moving beyond the best-known figures to provide contemporary character descriptions of more than four hundred Civil War generals. The quotes range in nature from praise to indictment, and differing opinions of each individual give a balanced view, making the book both entertaining and informative. A truly one-of-a-kind compilation illustrated with approximately one hundred historical photographs, The Civil War Generals will find a home not only with the casual reader and history buff, but also with the serious historian and researcher.
