Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1867, at the height of the Victorian Age of Empire, this regimental history records the role of the 26th (Cameronian) Regiment, Scotland's only rifle regiment, and one of the famously fierce Lowland regiments which contributed so much to the British Army's success in war. Founded in 1689 just after the 'Glorious Revolution' with the Earl of Angus as its first Colonel, the Regiment took part in William III's war with France, including the battle of Steinkirk and the capture of Namur. In the War of Spanish Succession it fought under the Duke of Marlborough at all four of his great victories of Blenheim, Ramillies, Oudenarde and Malplaquet, as well as many sieges. Back in Britain it was used to suppress the first major Jacobite rising in 1715 at the battle of Preston; defended Gibraltar in 1727, and fought in the American War of Independence. In the Napoleonic Wars it served in Egypt, took part in Sir John Moore's retreat to Corunna; and later in the 19th century served in India and China.

Until now, no reference work has attempted to examine this vast heritage of warfare.A Military History of Scotland offers readers an unparalleled insight into the evolution of the Scottish military tradition. This wide-ranging and extensively illustrated volume traces the military history of Scotland from pre-history to the recent conflict in Afghanistan. Edited by three leading military historians, and featuring contributions from thirty scholars, it explores the role of warfare in the emergence of a Scottish kingdom, the forging of a Scottish-British military identity, and the participation of Scots in Britain's imperial and world wars. Eschewing a narrow definition of military history, it investigates the cultural and physical dimensions of Scotland's military past such as Scottish military dress and music, the role of the Scottish soldier in art and literature, Scotland's fortifications and battlefield archaeology, and Scotland's military memorials and museum collections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Royal Scots: The Lothian Regiment; Formerly the First or the Royal Regiment of Foot But in a closer fashion we are concerned with our neighbours who have left their homes in our province of Lothian, be they mansions or cottages, to fight for us. For them even more than for ourselves this Story is written. We wish them to know the full splendour of the tradition which they carry like their colours. Nothing surely to them or to us can be more inspiriting than the record of the centuries of valour which they represent. They have in this war proved already that they yield nothing to their forbears in achievement, yet they may well wish to know the details of the traditions that they inherit and emulate. We at any rate, men, women and children of the Lothians, Edinburgh and Peebles, the romantic county with the unromantic name, desire to know all about our famous regiment, and so we welcome this book. There will need to be another volume added to it when this war is over. Honour, then, to The Royal Scots, bone of our bone and flesh of our flesh, among the choicest of our fighting men, whose record is in this book, as on the field of battle. We who cannot stand with them must at least try all we can to sustain them and fill their ranks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical Memoir of the 35th Royal Sussex Regiment of Foot It will be observed that I end the work on the 31813 of October, 1871, thereby excluding the substitutes for the ancient rank of Ensign from the list. The great change that swept over the British Army on the lst of November last year was so destructive to regiments, and leaves their future so uncertain, that I offer no excuse for bringing my labour to an end the day before that sop to democracy came into operation hoping, however, that if the regiment is permitted to exist as a regiment (and already it is almost turned into a provisional battalion), a worthier pen than mine may continue its career. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scotland for Ever: A Gift-Book of the Scottish Regiments I will indulge myself with only one significant extract; it regards the Scots in Belgium during the Waterloo campaign. The natives admired the English, but always returned to the Scots with, But the Scots, they are good and kind as well as brave; they are the only soldiers who become members of the family in the houses in which they are billeted; they even carry about the children, and do the domestic work.' The favourite proverbial form of compliment was, 'lions in the field and lambs in the house.' That is exquisite praise. The unhappy Netherlands can now compare these Scottish soldiers with the wild beasts who have desolated their country and ravaged their homes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Army From Within At the best, there is much in the work that a soldier is called on to do which is beyond his under standing, in the first years Of his service. One consequence Of this is that he learns to do things without questioning their meaning, and thus acquires a habit Of obeying; this, up to a few years ago, was the Object Of military training to instil into the soldier unquestioning Obedience to orders, and the sentence Obedience is the first duty Of the soldier, gained currency and labelled the soldier as a mere cog in a great machine, one whose duty lay in obeying as did that Roman sentinel at Pompeu. One Of the chief lessons Of the South African war, however, was that such Obedience was no longer the first duty Of the soldier; he must Obey, no less than before, but scientific warfare demands an understanding Obedience, and not the unquestioning, die-at-his post fidelity of Old time. The recruit Of to-day must be taught not only to Obey, but to understand, and by that fact the work Of his instructors, and his own work as well, are largely increased.
