Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Scott Family All races of men seem to have an intuitive feeling that it is a subject of legitimate pride to be one of a clan or family whose name is written large in past history and present affairs. Everybody likes to know something about his forefathers, and to be able to tell to his children the tales or stories about their ancestors, which he himself has heard from his parents. The commandment, "Honor thy father and thy mother," is good and sufficient authority for that feeling of reverence which is so generally shown towards a line of honorable ancestry. The history of the family was a matter of much importance to the Greek and Roman; the Chinese go so far as to magnify such reverence into ancestor worship and even the Red Indian of our own Northwest recorded the traditions of his ancestors on the totem of his tribe. Well, then, may the story of the chivalry, courage and even lawlessness (so often the mate of courage) of their forefathers find a responsive echo in the hearts of Scotts of the present generation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genealogical Memoirs of the Family of Sir Walter Scott, Bart;, Of Abbotsford: With a Reprint of His Memorials of the Haliburtons It may not be asserted that in his aspirations the Author of Waverley has failed. By forming alliances with the ancient and honourable families of Lockhart, Hope, and Max well, and other distinguished septs, his descendants have increased their hereditary greatness. And amidst several changes in the succession the name of Scott of Abbotsford has been preserved, as it will doubtless continue to be, so long as the works of the founder are read, which will probably be as long as the English language is understood. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Antiquity of the Name of Scott, With Brief Historical Notes: A Paper Read Before the Western Reserve Historical Society The theory of Professor Inness, of Edinburgh University, in relation to the original name of Scott in Scotland, is that, long before surnames were known, the people of that country, who wandeihzd into England, there received the distinctive appellation of Scotus or Scot, and re turned to Scotland, bearing the name of Scot, in addition to their former name. The canny lad who crossed the border, as plain Robert, returned in time from England as Robert Scot, and reared a family who retained the surname of their ancestor. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sir Walter Scott In these years, between 1791 and 1796, occurred Scott's serious love afiair. He met a young lady coming out of Grey Friars Church one Sunday, when it rained, and he gave her his umbrella and his heart at the same time. He soon managed to have an introduction, and seemed to have been successful in the progress of his suit, for there was a correspondence kept up between the young people for a time, and Scott made no secret of it in his own family. His father, with his stern sense of justice, considered it his duty to inform the young. Lady's father, Sir John Belches of Invermay, judging that there might be an objection to his son on account of inferior social position and uncertain prospects. Sir John did not take the aflair seriously, for he did not at first interfere but either he woke up to his pater nal duties, or the young lady changed her mind, or perhaps there was a quarrel history telleth not but in October, 1796, Margaret Belches threw over the future Great Wizard of the North, and married Sir William Forbes, of Pitsligo, a banker. That Scott felt this very keenly there is no doubt, but his strength, his pride, of which he had a good share, and his healthy mind, enabled him to go. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Sir Walter Scott Sir Walter Scott was born at Edinburgh on the 1sth of August 1771, being the birthday of the great Euro pean hero [napoleon] whose deeds he was afterwards to record. He was the third of a family consisting of six sons and one daughter. The eldest son, John, attained to a captaincy in an infantry regiment, but was early obliged to retire from service on account of the delicate state of his health. Another elder brother, Daniel, was a sailor, but died in early life. Of him Sir Walter has often been heard to assert, that he was by far the cleverest and most interesting of the whole. Thomas, the next brother to Sir Walter, followed the father's profession, and was for some years factor to the Marquis of Abercorn, but eventually died in Canada in 1822, in the capacity of paymaster to the 7oth Regi ment. Sir Walter himself entertained a fondly high Opinion of the talents of this brother but it is not borne out by the sense of 'his other friends. He possessed, however, some burlesque humour, and an acquaintance with Scottish manners and character - qualities which were apt to impose a little, and even induced some individuals to believe, for some time, that he, rather than his more gifted brother, was the author of The Novels.'
