Download or read book History of the Rockaways written by Alfred H. Bellot and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Rockaways: From the Year 1685 to 1917; Being a Complete Record and Review of Events of Historical Importance During That Period in the Rockaway Peninsula, Comprising the Villages of Hewlett, Woodmere, Cedarhurst, Lawrence, Inwood, Far Rockaway, Arvene, Rockaway Beac In preparing this first issue of the History of the Rockaways it has been my earnest endeavor to complete a work containing only well authenticated facts and to search diligently into tradition, wherever possible, in order that surmise and guesswork may be totally eliminated. The present work is the result and is the product of considerable research and inquiry, extending over a period of several years. Portions of Colonial, State, County and Village records have been copied and many officials and old residents, whose knowledge and information I have availed myself of, have been interviewed. A review of past events is not only a monument to the achievements of our forefathers, but it is a healthy mental exercise and a guide. It should prove to be a beneficent influence inasmuch as we may learn from their actions and experiences and fit ourselves accordingly during our own brief span of life before our time comes, as theirs did, to pass over into the Great Beyond. This work would be incomplete without a heartfelt tribute and acknowledgment being paid to our brave sons, so many of whom have gone from our midst, with little warning, to risk their lives on behalf of their country and the freedom of mankind, and who are heroically doing their share to hasten the end of the present terrible world conflict. Cordial thanks are extended to all who have assisted me, and particularly to Mrs. Sarah C. Lockwood, ex-Judge Edmund J. Healy, the late Watkin W. Jones, James Caffrey, Edward Roche, Divine Hewlett, William Scheer, J. W. Wainwright, Charles A. Schilling, David J. Folio, Dr. J. Carl Schmuck, Carleton Macy, W. S. Pettit, W. H. E. Jay Junior, Charles R. Bettes, Andrew McTigue, The Tablet and others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Rockaway Beach by : Vivian Rattay Carter
Download or read book Rockaway Beach written by Vivian Rattay Carter and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronicling the story of New York's beloved Rockaway Beach community and the efforts to recapture the magical success from an earlier era. The American frontier did not just consist of a prairie--it also included marshes and windswept sand dunes. When the earliest settlers arrived at Rockaway Beach on steamships in the mid-1800s, it was a narrow strip of land packed with ponds and covered with dunes. Within 30 years, the community had grown into a wildly popular resort served by a thriving rail line. Amusement parks, hotels, taverns, and dance halls abounded, as did bungalow courts and open-air tent colonies. In the 1960s, the area was disrupted by urban development efforts and transportation infrastructure had declined. Today, Rockaway Beach is being rediscovered by a new generation of visitors and entrepreneurs as longtime residents work simultaneously to reinvigorate it.
