Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Rockaways: From the Year 1685 to 1917; Being a Complete Record and Review of Events of Historical Importance During That Period in the Rockaway Peninsula, Comprising the Villages of Hewlett, Woodmere, Cedarhurst, Lawrence, Inwood, Far Rockaway, Arvene, Rockaway Beac In preparing this first issue of the History of the Rockaways it has been my earnest endeavor to complete a work containing only well authenticated facts and to search diligently into tradition, wherever possible, in order that surmise and guesswork may be totally eliminated. The present work is the result and is the product of considerable research and inquiry, extending over a period of several years. Portions of Colonial, State, County and Village records have been copied and many officials and old residents, whose knowledge and information I have availed myself of, have been interviewed. A review of past events is not only a monument to the achievements of our forefathers, but it is a healthy mental exercise and a guide. It should prove to be a beneficent influence inasmuch as we may learn from their actions and experiences and fit ourselves accordingly during our own brief span of life before our time comes, as theirs did, to pass over into the Great Beyond. This work would be incomplete without a heartfelt tribute and acknowledgment being paid to our brave sons, so many of whom have gone from our midst, with little warning, to risk their lives on behalf of their country and the freedom of mankind, and who are heroically doing their share to hasten the end of the present terrible world conflict. Cordial thanks are extended to all who have assisted me, and particularly to Mrs. Sarah C. Lockwood, ex-Judge Edmund J. Healy, the late Watkin W. Jones, James Caffrey, Edward Roche, Divine Hewlett, William Scheer, J. W. Wainwright, Charles A. Schilling, David J. Folio, Dr. J. Carl Schmuck, Carleton Macy, W. S. Pettit, W. H. E. Download or read book The Rockaways written by Emil R. Lucev and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rockaway Peninsula, also known as the Rockaways, is located off Long Island, within the borough of Queens. Its remoteness from Manhattan has made it a popular retreat and has provided an out-of-the-way area for families looking to relocate and live by the sea. The Rockaway's became a popular area for seaside hotels beginning in the 1830s, and its popularity grew with the coming of the Long Island Rail Road in the 1880s. In 1893, Hog Island, a resort known for entertaining Boss Tweed and Tammany Hall, sank into the sea. Located a few miles east of Breezy Point, and also known as Rockaway Island, the entire island disappeared during a storm. The Rockaways was also the home of Rockaway's Playland, a world renowned amusement park from 1901 to 1985. Through vintage postcards, The Rockaways captures the history and charm of this seaside community.

Also included in this volume are photo essays featuring the Great Iron Pier of Rockaway Beach: a featured tribute to some of the (former) local fire houses; the Far Rockaway railway station (Depot Square) and why and how it developed into a shopping plaza during the second half of the 20th Century as well as the ultimate demise of that underutilized commercial property; the famous Elstone Hotel and grounds in the Bayswater section of Far Rockaway; the Roche's development on South Street in lower Far Rockaway; the enormous popularity of the many tent cities before they were eclipsed by summer rental bungalows; the rise and fall of Hog Island -- "once upon a time you saw it - now you don't"; some final images of Rockaway's Playland recorded almost immediately before the arrival of the demolition crews; and these are only a few of the exciting discoveries unearthed and revealed between the covers of this book. This work also includes the full report issued on March 20th, 1918 as prepared and presented by the Chief Engineer of The New York City Board of Estimate and Apportionment regarding the diminishing beaches of the Rockaway Peninsula. So, be prepared to be entertained and informed by this author's latest release in his continuing salute to the history of the Rockaways.

Book Synopsis Rockaway Beach by : Vivian Rattay Carter
Download or read book Rockaway Beach written by Vivian Rattay Carter and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronicling the story of New York's beloved Rockaway Beach community and the efforts to recapture the magical success from an earlier era. The American frontier did not just consist of a prairie--it also included marshes and windswept sand dunes. When the earliest settlers arrived at Rockaway Beach on steamships in the mid-1800s, it was a narrow strip of land packed with ponds and covered with dunes. Within 30 years, the community had grown into a wildly popular resort served by a thriving rail line. Amusement parks, hotels, taverns, and dance halls abounded, as did bungalow courts and open-air tent colonies. In the 1960s, the area was disrupted by urban development efforts and transportation infrastructure had declined. Today, Rockaway Beach is being rediscovered by a new generation of visitors and entrepreneurs as longtime residents work simultaneously to reinvigorate it.
Download or read book Rockaway written by Diane Cardwell and published by Houghton Mifflin. This book was released on 2020 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspirational story of one woman learning to surf and creating a new life in gritty, eccentric Rockaway Beach Unmoored by a failed marriage and disconnected from her high-octane life in the city, Diane Cardwell finds herself staring at a small group of surfers coasting through mellow waves toward shore--and senses something shift. Rockawayis the riveting, joyful story of one woman's reinvention--beginning with Cardwell taking the A Train to Rockaway, a neglected spit of land dangling off New York City into the Atlantic Ocean. She finds a teacher, buys a tiny bungalow, and throws her not-overly-athletic self headlong into learning the inner workings and rhythms of waves and the muscle development and coordination needed to ride them. As Cardwell begins to find her balance in the water and out, superstorm Sandy hits, sending her into the maelstrom in search of safer ground. In the aftermath, the community comes together and rebuilds, rekindling its bacchanalian spirit as a historic surfing community, one with its own quirky codes and surf culture. And Cardwell's surfing takes off as she finds a true home among her fellow passionate longboarders at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club, living out "the most joyful path through life." Rockawayis a stirring story of inner salvation sought through a challenging physical pursuit--and of learning to accept the idea of a complete reset, no matter when in life it comes.

Originally popular as a Jewish summer vacation spot near the Atlantic Ocean, the Five Towns and the Far Rockaway area grew to become a thriving, year-round Jewish metropolis, with thousands of families and scores of synagogues and Jewish educational institutions. A center for shopping and kosher restaurants, the Five Towns area has become one of the most popular locations for young, married Jewish couples. Jewish influence has expanded greatly in local government and education. The rich history of the early years of Jewish growth and development in the Five Towns and Rockaways lends a deeper understanding of this phenomenal change of demographics and influence that has occurred over the last few decades.
Download or read book The Big Oyster written by Mark Kurlansky and published by Random House. This book was released on 2007-01-09 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before New York City was the Big Apple, it could have been called the Big Oyster. Now award-winning author Mark Kurlansky tells the remarkable story of New York by following the trajectory of one of its most fascinating inhabitants–the oyster, whose influence on the great metropolis remains unparalleled. For centuries New York was famous for its oysters, which until the early 1900s played such a dominant a role in the city’s economy, gastronomy, and ecology that the abundant bivalves were Gotham’s most celebrated export, a staple food for the wealthy, the poor, and tourists alike, and the primary natural defense against pollution for the city’s congested waterways. Filled with cultural, historical, and culinary insight–along with historic recipes, maps, drawings, and photos–this dynamic narrative sweeps readers from the island hunting ground of the Lenape Indians to the death of the oyster beds and the rise of America’s environmentalist movement, from the oyster cellars of the rough-and-tumble Five Points slums to Manhattan’s Gilded Age dining chambers. Kurlansky brings characters vividly to life while recounting dramatic incidents that changed the course of New York history. Here are the stories behind Peter Stuyvesant’s peg leg and Robert Fulton’s “Folly”; the oyster merchant and pioneering African American leader Thomas Downing; the birth of the business lunch at Delmonico’s; early feminist Fanny Fern, one of the highest-paid newspaper writers in the city; even “Diamond” Jim Brady, who we discover was not the gourmand of popular legend. With The Big Oyster, Mark Kurlansky serves up history at its most engrossing, entertaining, and delicious.
