Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, Vol. 2 of 2: With Plan of Organization, Portraits of Officials and Biographical Sketches Duty had only to be presented to him, without outlining the man ner of performance, to insure conscientious and speedy attention at his hands. Always a master of details, it has never been necessary for him to st0p and measure their value. They have rushed with mighty strides before his mind and led him to sound conclusions. A man of wonderful self-control, his poise has ever been the same, whether amidst the whirling of machinery, the din of battle, the rumbling of trains, the rush of business, in the delights of the chase, the halls of entertainment, or the quiet of the fireside. With that poise he steps to the front in his chosen profession as a leader; and, as the New York Herald truly says of him, No emergency can arise, so far as the Pennsylvania Railroad is con cerned, that will not be met with the intrepidity and wisdom shown in his long and honorable career. Excerpt: ... the area covered by its municipality are to be found all the comfort, culture and progressiveness of the most favored spots on this continent. Its growth was slow. In 1840, although it had felt the influence of the locomotive "Robert Ralston," its population did not number 1000; in 1860 it increased to 5664; in 1870 to 16,023; and now, in 1898, it boasts a population of 35,000. Improvements came apparently late, but not before it was prepared to receive them. The development was slow, but permanent, and is so because the pluck and energy necessary to reduce the wilderness was brought to its doors, and produced a superior citizenship morally, intellectually and physically, and one intense in its practicability. In 1855 the portion of the road from Sunbury to Milton was completed, opening the whole line of forty miles from Sunbury to Williamsport. Early in 1856, the financial outlook for the Sunbury and Erie Railroad being very discouraging and the project threatened with disastrous failure, its friends turned to Samuel Vaughan Merrick as the one man who could retrieve its affairs. Mr. Merrick had been the first President ot the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, and was one of the most prominent and most public-spirited citizens of Philadelphia. In the crisis, those interested in the success of the road called upon him to accept the Presidency of the Company. This tender would have been declined but for the receipt of the following letter from twenty-one of the leading citizens of Philadelphia: "Ph1ladelph1a, February 21, 1856. "To Samuel V. Merrick, Esq. "Dear Sir: We have learned that the Presidency of the Sunbury and Erie Railroad Company has been tendered to you under such circumstances as render it reasonably certain that your character...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1933, the Pennsylvania Railroad had been in existence for nearly ninety years. During this time, it had grown from a small line, struggling to build west from the state capital in Harrisburg, to the dominant transportation company in the United States. In Volume 2 of The Pennsylvania Railroad, Albert J. Churella continues his history of this giant of American transportation. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Pennsylvania Railroad was the world's largest business corporation and the nation's most important railroad. By 1917, the Pennsylvania Railroad, like the nation itself, was confronting a very different world. The war that had consumed Europe since 1914 was about to engulf the United States. Amid unprecedented demand for transportation, the federal government undertook the management of the railroads, while new labor policies and new regulatory initiatives, coupled with a postwar recession, would challenge the company like never before. Only time would tell whether the years that followed would signal a new beginning for the Pennsylvania Railroad or the beginning of the end. The Pennsylvania Railroad: The Age of Limits, 1917–1933,represents an unparalleled look at the history, the personalities, and the technologies of this iconic American company in a period that marked the shift from building an empire to exploring the limits of their power.

Book excerpt: "Do not think of the Pennsylvania Railroad as a business enterprise," Forbes magazine informed its readers in May 1936. "Think of it as a nation." At the end of the nineteenth century, the Pennsylvania Railroad was the largest privately owned business corporation in the world. In 1914, the PRR employed more than two hundred thousand people—more than double the number of soldiers in the United States Army. As the self-proclaimed "Standard Railroad of the World," this colossal corporate body underwrote American industrial expansion and shaped the economic, political, and social environment of the United States. In turn, the PRR was fundamentally shaped by the American landscape, adapting to geography as well as shifts in competitive economics and public policy. Albert J. Churella's masterful account, certain to become the authoritative history of the Pennsylvania Railroad, illuminates broad themes in American history, from the development of managerial practices and labor relations to the relationship between business and government to advances in technology and transportation. Churella situates exhaustive archival research on the Pennsylvania Railroad within the social, economic, and technological changes of nineteenth- and twentieth-century America, chronicling the epic history of the PRR intertwined with that of a developing nation. This first volume opens with the development of the Main Line of Public Works, devised by Pennsylvanians in the 1820s to compete with the Erie Canal. Though a public rather than a private enterprise, the Main Line foreshadowed the establishment of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1846. Over the next decades, as the nation weathered the Civil War, industrial expansion, and labor unrest, the PRR expanded despite competition with rival railroads and disputes with such figures as Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller. The dawn of the twentieth century brought a measure of stability to the railroad industry, enabling the creation of such architectural monuments as Pennsylvania Station in New York City. The volume closes at the threshold of American involvement in World War I, as the strategies that PRR executives had perfected in previous decades proved less effective at guiding the company through increasingly tumultuous economic and political waters.

This book was released on 2022-08-26 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scott L. Mingus Sr. and Eric J. Wittenberg, the authors of more than forty Civil War books, have once again teamed up to present a history of the opening moves of the Gettysburg Campaign in the two-volume study “If We Are Striking for Pennsylvania”: The Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of the Potomac March to Gettysburg. This compelling study is one of the first to integrate the military, media, political, social, economic, and civilian perspectives with rank-and-file accounts from the soldiers of both armies as they inexorably march toward their destiny at Gettysburg. This first installment covers June 3–21, 1863, while the second, spanning June 22–30, completes the march and carries the armies to the eve of the fighting. Gen. Robert E. Lee began moving part of his Army of Northern Virginia from the Old Dominion toward Pennsylvania on June 3, 1863. Lee believed his army needed to win a major victory on Northern soil if the South was to have a chance at winning the war. Transferring the fighting out of war-torn Virginia would allow the state time to heal while he supplied his army from untapped farms and stores in Maryland and the Keystone State. Lee had also convinced Pres. Jefferson Davis that his offensive would interfere with the Union effort to take Vicksburg in Mississippi. The bold movement would trigger extensive cavalry fighting and a major battle at Winchester before culminating in the bloody three-day battle at Gettysburg. As the Virginia army moved north, the Army of the Potomac responded by protecting the vital roads to Washington, D.C., in case Lee turned to threaten the capital. Opposing presidents Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis, meanwhile, kept a close watch on the latest and often conflicting military intelligence gathered in the field. Throughout northern Virginia, central Maryland, and south-central Pennsylvania, meanwhile, civilians and soldiers alike struggled with the reality of a mobile campaign and the massive logistical needs of the armies. Thousands left written accounts of the passage of the long martial columns. Mingus and Wittenberg mined hundreds of primary accounts, newspapers, and other sources to produce this powerful and gripping account. As readers will quickly learn, much of it is glossed over in other studies of the campaign, which cannot be fully understood without a firm appreciation of what the armies (and civilians) did on their way to the small crossroads town in Pennsylvania.
