Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Origin of the Free Methodist Church But, though Methodism has changed its home, it has in no wise changed either its character or its mode of Opera tion. And hence, as it fled to the Free Methodists to escape the trammels of worldly associations, a time-serving policy, and the soul-sickening routine of a lifeless formal ism it could no longer endure; so will it in like manner abandon them, should the contingency ever arise, when it is no longer permitted to operate through their instru mentality in accordance with its own peculiar principles and purposes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Methodist Protestant Church The present appears to be the proper time to pre sent our fellowship, and the christian public, with a history OF the methodist protestant church. The brethren best acquainted with the origin and pro gress of our denomination are becoming advanced in life, and in a little while 'will pass Off the stage of action. Some have already gone. The materials also, essential to a standard work are disappearing, so that in a few years hence, the historian would find it difficult, if not impossible, to obtain the necessary data for the preparation and completion of a correct history of our Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States of America, Vol. 3 Thomas L. Rushmore, Esq. My Dear Sir: I submit to you the third installment of my narrative of the History of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The name of your family appears honorably in its pages, connected with one of its most interesting episodes, the introduction of Methodism into Canada. Many of its subjects have been meditated under the summer shelter of your trees, and its labor has been relieved by neighborly attentions which will ever associate the memory of your family with my task. In the two preceding volumes I have recorded the planting of the Church, and sufficiently denned its theological and ecclesiastical systems; in the present the story proceeds directly along its chronological line, suspended somewhat abruptly for the convenient size of the volume, but continued, with no further interruption, in the next, which is now passing through the press. Some important questions and topics, requiring more classified treatment, I have reserved for distinct chapters in the fourth volume, though they receive passing notice at their proper dates in the narrative. Many difficulties, some insuperable ones, have beset my labors. While we have abundant and well-verified documents for particular sections of the Church, for others, not less important, we have hardly any. Of some early preachers we have more or less ample biographies; of others, and of not a few who were chieftains of the cause, we have but scattered notices, incapable of being wrought into satisfactory sketches. I have done the best I could, perhaps all that any pen can now or ever do, to present these cases in their proper historical positions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Exposition of the Twenty-Five Articles of Religion of the Methodist Episcopal Church The younger element in Methodism to-day is marked by an especial spirit of inquiry, and to meet this a treatise on the Articles of the denomination is a desideratum in Methodist literature. This work is not intended to be a system Of theology. The subjects discussed are limited to those suggested by the Articles; these subjects are illustrated and confirmed by quotations from Methodist authorities in scholarship and doctrine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and History of the Primitive Methodist Church, Vol. 1 And the said several societies and classes, together with other congregations, societies, and classes, in several parts of England, were afterwards closely united and connected, and the whole thereof under the care of the said Hugh Bourne, James Bourne, William Clowes, and James Steele, were formed into one general community or Connexion, known and distinguished by the title or denomination of The Primitive Methodist Connexion.' Undoubtedly, then, William Clowes is right in his main contention, viz., that the Primitive Methodist Church began in 1811, and, therefore, that the proper history of the Church must also begin with that date. It is an anachronism to speak of Primitive Methodism before 1811. Any incidents which took place prior to the union effected in this memorable year, must be regarded as incidents and episodes belonging to a revivalistic movement, or series of revivalistic movements, locally differentiated, proceeding on early or primitive Methodist lines, partaking, therefore, of the nature of a survival, reaction, or return to an earlier type of aggressive agency, and finally converging and coalescing in one general community or Connexion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Methodist Episcopal Church History: Showing the Evolution of Methodism in the United States of America, for the Use of Students and General Readers This book does not profess to be an exhaustive history of the Methodist Episcopal Church, much less of Methodism. It is a Manual of Methodist Episcopal Church History in America in a continuous story from 1766 to the close of 1892, a. Period of one hundred and twenty-six years. It aims to give, as far as possible, the leading facts in the history of the Church in chronological order. And in such a manner as will enable the student to readily see the relation existing between those facts. The secessions from the Church, with the causes producing and the events leading to them, have been clearly stated. That most difficult of all periods in the history of American Methodism the period of the great disruption of the Methodist Episcopal Church and the formation of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, with the suits that followed - has been treated in as del icate a manner as possible to be true to history and consistent with the facts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Polity of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States: Being an Exposure of the Spurious Origin of the Methodist Episcipacy My object in calling attention to this passage, is to cor rect an error which seems unaccountably to prevail, about the control of Methodist church property. You will per haps be surprised to learn that the clergy of the Methodist Episcopal Church do not own a church or a parsonage in the United States - and that the acknowledged pastor of a Methodist Church cannot take up a collection in it, or even invite any other than a Methodist preacher to preach in it, without the assent of the trustees. You will also be sur prised to learn, that the Methodist Churches in this city be long to a corporation consisting of all the male members above the age of twenty-one years. The preachers have no control over the current funds of the church. The means of ministerial support are raised by weekly contributions in class meetings. These are received by the leaders, who are all lay men, and by them paid over to the stewards, who are laymen. When a preacher is sent by the bishop to a particular sta tion, he is met by a committee of laymen appointed by lay men, who inquire into the probable wants of his family, and fix the amount of his salary. The preacher has no right to stipulate for compensation. He must take What is offered him; and should the stewards not be able to pay what they promised, (which unfortunately often happens, ) by_ari ex press article of the discipline, it is provided that the church shall not be accountable for the deficiency, as in case of debt. On the other hand, if a preacher be sent to a station, and the stewards, sustained by the membership, refuse to make any provision for him, he has no means of obtaining a cent.
