Excerpt: ... for the purpose, a ruse which was successful in inviting an'attack from Hill's Corps, which was, however, easily repulsed by our admirably trained batteries. After dark another march to "the left" was commenced, and continued during the night. It was extended on the day following, by way of Guinney's Station, west of Bowling Green to the North Anna river, near which we arrived on the 24th. On the 25th our Brigade, which had been performing service as train-guard, crossed the river and joined the Division, which we found in works a brief distance beyond. Some fighting here occurred, but none with the 6th Corps, the 5th and 9th being chiefly engaged. May 26th a reconnoissance was effected to Noel's Station, on the Virginia Central railroad, but at dark the troops countermarched, recrossed the river, and moved to Chesterfield Station, a probable distance of eight or ten miles. This march was known as "the mud march," because of the intensely muddy and almost impassable condition of the roads. They were so cut up by the passage of artillery and wagon trains, that they were knee deep with mud and water, and in some places pools were encountered into which men would sink to their waists. The night was very dark and from all these difficulties some confusion resulted. Unfortunate men fell and lost 'their muskets, some left their shoes buried deep in the mire, and it is believed that a few actually perished from prostration and suffocation in the mud. The march was ended at midnight and the troopa rested. On the 27th the Corps moved to Sailer's Ford, on the Pamunkey, which river was crossed on the next day. A position was taken up immediately beyond, on a ridge of hills and fortified. On the 30th the march was again resumed...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Seventy-Eighth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry The 78th Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry Volunteers comprises two different organizations. The first organization was mustered into the United States Service October 12, 1861, and was mustered out November 4, 1864. The connection between the two organizations is two-fold. First, the new organization succeeded to the name and number, 78th Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry Volunteers. Second, the men who served in the first organization, and whose term of service had not expired when the old regiment was mustered out, and the men of the old regiment who had re-enlisted were transferred to Companies A and B of the new regiment, and comprised nearly the whole of these two companies in the new organization. To avoid confusion, we have made two distinct rolls, and the names of the men who served in both organizations will appear in both rolls, and the date of muster will show how far each one participated in the services and honors of each organization. If this Regimental History were designed only for surviving comrades an outline sketch would be sufficient, and each comrade could, from the store-house of his own memory, fill up the gaps; but, being for all comrades, their descendants and the people of the State, we deem it wise to explain military terms and give sketches of everyday camp life. If this history were written with special regard for literary beauty, or, as a specimen of interesting narrative, we could blend fact and fiction in such a way as to make it more interesting to our readers; but, being designed for an accurate record of facts, all fiction, however interesting, must be excluded. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the One Hundred Forty-First Regiment: Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1862-1865 The present work owes its existence to the enterprise of the editor of the Bradford Reporter. In the latter part of the year 1883, he wrote to the author in regard to a series of articles to be printed in that paper under the caption of the "Battles of the One Hundred Forty-first Regiment." After conferring with some of the officers of the Regiment, the original plan was enlarged to include a History, instead of a series of sketches. Immediately the work of collecting material commenced, and the publication began in the June following. At that time only newspaper articles were contemplated, but friends suggested that the history of a Regiment that had done such gallant service ought to be in more permanent form, consequently the newspaper columns were changed to book pages, and the present work is the result. While no pains have been spared to secure accuracy of statement, and a reasonable fullness of detail, the manuscript was prepared amid a pressure of other work, it often happening that the last line was printed before another was written. Many infelicities of expression would have been corrected if a revision could have been made. Inexperience in proof reading which was usually done in the editor's office amid the hurry and bustle of getting ready for press, have caused numerous typographical errors to be overlooked. Only enough of general army movements have been given to indicate the work the Regiment was expected to do, and no criticism has been attempted. In addition to the account of its doings as a separate military organization, it was contemplated to give a brief account of each man connected with it. This was soon found to be impracticable, but of the two hundred and fifty members of it who lost their lives in the service, such sketches have been attempted Here the greatest difficulty has been experienced. In some eases the men were entire strangers to their comrades until they enlisted, and but little was positively known of them; in others, friends have removed and after much inquiry no trace of a relative has been found; in some others friends could furnish only approximate data, and in one or two instances near relatives have entirely, neglected to answer the letters written. In these sketches slight errors will undoubtedly be found. The muster rolls have been revised with great care, and an attempt has been made to combine an index with it, which is hoped will be found satisfactory, as well as the tables appended. Only those who have had experience in this work know its difficulties. A few slight errors overlooked while the book was in press have been noted. The preparation of the work has been encouraged and its labor greatly lightened by the cordial interest manifested in it by the members and friends of the Regiment. General Madill, in addition to giving me the use of his diary and private papers, has gone over the manuscript before it was given to the printer. Mrs. Colonel Watkins, Mrs. Major Spalding, and Mrs. Captain Atkinson, kindly allowed me to peruse both letters and diaries written by their honored and distinguished husbands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the One Hundred and Fortieth Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers In the preparation of this work, which was authorized by the Regimental Association a year ago, no pains have been spared to make it an accurate, concise and readable history. In addition to the material accumulated from official records in the War Department and Congressional Library, many interesting facts and war-time incidents have been gleaned from local newspaper files, from note books kept by comrades, and from letters, brown with age and sometimes scarcely legible, which were written to the homefolk, in the camp, on the picket line or on the battlefield. In the verification of uncertain statements, the systematically conducted search for additional information, and the accumulation of material of every sort, the author has had the hearty support and invaluable assistance of his associates on the Historical Committee. With General Shallenberger, Chairman of the Publication Committee, wise in council, sane in judgment and unwearied in his devotion to the "dear old Regiment," at the Headquarters of official information, and with the Secretary of the Association, Harry J. Boyde, at its Headquarters in Western Pennsylvania, the writer has been in almost constant communication. Most generously and unselfishly have these comrades responded to every demand for additional assistance or information, which was made upon their time or patience. Not less of honor and grateful appreciation should be accorded also to Dr. John R. Paxton of the Committee, whose generous initiative has made the publication of the book a possibility, in a style worthy of the noble Regiment, whose achievements it records, and to Major Henry who gave his cordial assent to the plans of the Historian, and who, in the intervals between periods of extreme suffering, and but a short time before his death, dictated valuable information for his use. With the sanction of the committee this volume goes forth on its mission, in the hope that it may worthily revive the stirring memories of the past and help to kindle anew the fires of patriotism which burned so brightly in the dark days of civil strife.
