Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mexican War IT has been wisely remarked by a distinguished American statesman, that the commencement of the Mexican War was the opening of a new volume of American history. Nations, like individuals, are often borne along in their progress, without pausing to consider the particular acts which are to shape and control their future destiny; and perhaps there is no subject on which the public mind is less likely to act with caution and deliberation than on the momentous question of peace or war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sources for a History of the Mexican War, 1846-1848 Our war of 1846-48 has often been regarded as an isolated event, merely an episode in our history; and to a considerable extent so it was. We fought and we made conquests of value; but neither war nor conquest was an essential part of our national policy. We can lay our fingers upon the causes of the war one by one, and its results are equally within com pass. No foreign nation became involved, nor did serious complications of any sort grow out of the affair. In short, it was much like a small, though vigorous, New England thunderstorm, made up of local currents and a few black, tufted clouds, which overwhelms some valley with darkness, roar and flood, yet is plainly visible in its entirety from the neighboring mountain. For this reason the subject possesses a rare attractiveness for the investigator, so often baffled or embarrassed by the reach of his vistas; while at the same time, as will presently appear, certain peculiar subtleties create a special interest of precisely the opposite kind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Condenses History of the Mexican War and Its Glorious Results Since the printing of this book it has come to my knowledge that comrade James C. Carleton, secre tary of the National Association of Mexican War Veterans of Bedford, Indiana, under-ranks me in age 14 days. He was born on the 17th of June, 1882, while I saw the light first on the 3rd of June of the same year. This knocks the conceit out of me as to being the youngest veteran of the Mexican War, and I take my hat off to my dear young com rade Carleton, late of the 5th Regiment Indiana Volunteers, Colonel Lane, and I am relegated to a back seat. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete History of the Mexican War: Its Causes, Conduct, and Consequences; Comprising an Account of the Various Military and Naval Operations, From Its Commencement to the Treaty of Peace IN relation to the origin of the Mexican War, which now forms an important part of the history of our coun try, public opinion has been divided, and much affected by the political bias of the two leading pmties; so that it is impossible for an impartial chronicler to please both, and difficult even to avoid giving offence to either. I have therefore reviewed the causes which led to the war between the sister republics, unaffected by any party preferences or prejudices whatever; and after a careful examination of all the points at issue, and the diplomatic action of the two governments, have endea voured at least to arrive at just and candid conclusions. In the record of the events of the war - which may challenge comparison with the military achievements of any age or nation - I have endeavoured to award to each arm of the service - cavalry, artillery, and infantry, and to our navy - the meed of praise it has so nobly won; and if, in any case, the claims of particular persons may have been overlooked, it is to be hoped that the circum stance will not be attributed to a disposition to do injus tice to any. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the War With Mexico The war of the United States with Mexico awakened the military ardor of American citizens, which had been slumbering since the contest with Great Britain in 1812 - 14. It stirred their imagina tion with the romance which has ever been con nected with the scenes of Spanish conquest, height ened by the strange histories and vestiges of the most ancient people and civilization of the New World. It allured the adventurous spirit of the Northern soldier by the attractions of a tropical cli mate and a land of superb mountain-ranges veined with silver and gold, and of valleys and plains rich with Southern fruits and flowers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise History of the Mormon Battalion in the Mexican War, 1846-1847 After a lapse of thirty-six years from the time of the enlistment of the Mormon Battalion, no apology is required for publishing its history. Had its publication been undertaken at an earlier date, it might have been accomplished more satisfactorily to all concerned, as many important and interesting facts and incidents have doubtless been buried with the departed veterans. However, the most sanguine expectations of the author have been realized in the data collected for compiling this history, consisting of diaries written during service and numerous letters and statements from surviving members of that valiant corps. Neither labor, pains nor expense has been spared in the effort to make this a just and authentic history. The author has not aimed at sensational effect, nor made any attempt at literary embellishment, but rather endeavored to offer a plain statement of facts and give due credit to all concerned. Should his efforts meet the approval of his intelligent readers, his highest ambition in the publication of this work will be attained. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Mexican War, or Facts for the People, Showing the Relation of the United States Government to Slavery: Compiled From Official and Authentic Documents Many valuable works on the relation of the government of the United States to slavery, have already been given to the public. Among which are, "A view of the Action of the Federal Government," by Wm. Jay; "Rights of the Free States Subverted," by Joshua Giddings; and "The Slave Power," by John G. Palfrey. The editions of these, however, are quite exhausted; and for many reasons it is of great importance, that the facts contained in them should be condensed into a single volume. New developments of the workings of Slavery through its grand agent, the government, are every day occurrences; and as the most remarkable of these are embodied in the commencement and progress of the war upon Mexico, I have collected from various sources some of the most prominent facts in the slave-holding relations of the government, including enough of the history of the annexation of Texas, and the Mexican War, to exhibit in a clear light, that the sole object of the nation, in the acquisition of the one, and the prosecution of the other, is the extension and perpetuation of human bondage. In the preparation of this work, I have been materially aided by the above mentioned publications, for which I have taken great pleasure in giving credit. The facts contained in this book, and the positions which they are summoned to establish, are believed to be incontrovertible. They are based upon official documents which are conclusive on the points to which they refer. And we shall challenge the history of the world in vain for another spectacle of such hypocrisy and wickedness as that presented by this nation. It is true, that among the more savage tribes of Africa wars are still carried on for the purpose of adding to the victims of slavery. But these wars are mainly, though in part indirectly, chargeable upon the Americans; who, though they have denounced the foreign traffic, still give their countenance and encouragement to the trade, by keeping open markets for human flesh in the Capitol, and most of the principal towns and cities of more than half the Slates of the Union, and make the "protection, extension, and perpetuation of slavery, the vital and animating principle of the government." Quisenberry, the author of this series of the State Historical Society, republished from the May Register, needs no introduction to the readers of Kentucky. For some years he has been known as one of the most charming writers the State has produced. His style is that of Macaulay - enlisting the attention of the reader at once, and holding it with the spell of his ele gant diction, and authentic presentation of the facts of history. In this account of the Mexican war he supplies a great want in Kentucky history. He has obtained data and facts for it, beyond the reach of the ordinary historian, having access to the Government records in the War Department at Washington, and upon these he has drawn for much information that will be new to our read ers, to whom the Mexican War is almost a for gotten chapter ln American history. There are a few survivors of the Mexican War now, and more than one of these has written to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Most of its histories can be divided into two classes. First come those written immediately after the conclusion Of peace. The authors of these painted everything red, white, and blue, and chanted songs of glory. Then come the histories written under what may be called Abolition influence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spy Company: A Story of the Mexican War The summer night was falling softly upon Saratoga when that great watering place was scarce more than a village embowered in trees; when most of its present magnificent avenues were pretty turnpike roads and some only bridle paths; Saratoga when those who sought its summer retreat came to it leisurely, many of them by stage-coach, to find recreation in its pleasant country and health in the living waters of its sparkling springs; the Saratoga of 1844, before half a dozen converging railroads had made it part of our rushing, bustling, frantic, modern world; a quiet, serene picnic place only disturbed - by politics. Even on this placid evening towards the end of August, though the lights of the big dining room of the old United States Hotel illuminated the great fancy dress ball of the season, Democrats and Whigs clashed as hotly upon the big verandas and tree shaded pleasance as they did at political joint discussions and torchlight demonstrations or even in the halls of Con gress itself.
