Book excerpt: Christian-Muslim Relations, a Bibliographical History, Volume 11 (CMR 11) covering South and East Asia, Africa and the Americas in the period 1600-1700, is a continuing volume in a history of relations between the two faiths from the 7th to the early 20th century as this is reflected in written works. It comprises introductory essays and the main body of entries which treat all the works, surviving or lost, that are recorded. These entries provide biographical details of the authors, descriptions and assessments of their works, and complete accounts of publications and studies. The result of collaboration between numerous leading scholars, CMR 11, along with the other volumes in this series, is intended as a basic tool for research in Christian-Muslim relations. Section Editors: Clinton Bennett, Luis F. Bernabe Pons, Jaco Beyers, Lejla Demiri, Martha Frederiks, David D. Book excerpt: "This thesis examines a lesser-known Jesuit mission in nineteenth-century South India, the New Madura Mission (NMM). While Catholic mission history in India has largely focused on the innovation of the Old Madura Mission (1606-1773), the NMM has been comparatively disregarded as unimportant despite its influence on Catholicism in the region. In particular, the mission was instrumental to the development of the fully Indian Jesuit order existing in Tamil Nadu today. Engaging with theories of mimesis and conversion, this thesis analyzes missionary writings to show how the Jesuits rewrote and reshaped Indian Christianity in response to their experience in South India. I argue that the beginning of the Catholic hierarchy's 'Indianization' was partly enabled by the development of new narratives, objectives, and sites for Catholicism in India, which came to a head at St. Joseph's College in Trichinopoly. In doing so, I emphasize the ways in which the Jesuits and their ideas were affected by the Tamil worlds in which they worked in order to suggest, following Eugene Irschick, that the missionaries themselves were subject to a process of conversion." --

Book excerpt: In the midst of a global pandemic, the Frankfurt POLY (Polycentricity and Plurality of Premodern Christianities) Lectures on "Pathways through Early Modern Christianities" brought together a virtual, global community of scholars and students in the Spring and Summer of 2021 to discuss the fascinating nature of early modern religious life. In this book, eleven pathbreaking scholars from the "four corners" of the early modern world reflect on the analytical tools that structure their field and that they have developed, revised and embraced in their scholarship: from generations to tolerance, from uniformity to publicity, from accommodation to local religion, from polycentrism to connected histories, and from identity to object agency. Together, the chapters of this reference work help both students and advanced researchers alike to appreciate the extent of our current knowledge about early modern christianities in their interconnected global context—and what exciting new travels could lie ahead.
