When, in the year 753, the Lombards took possession of those Italian provinces included under the general title of the " Exarchate of Ravenna," and projected the subjugation of the entire peninsula, Stephen II., the successor of Zachary, applied to the court of France for protection and assistance1. Pepin hastened to comply with the request of the pontiff.
