In June 1915 it became part of 99th Brigade 33rd Division, along with 17th, 23rd and 24th Battalions RF. The battalion went to France in November 1915 with 33rd Division, but almost immediately on arrival the brigade was transferred to the 2nd Division, a regular division, where the battaion remained till it was disbanded in Feb 1918 when the BEF reduced the number of brigades in a battalion from four to three. The editor stresses this book was compiled for the surviving members of the battalion, some 410 died, a VC was won by L/Sgt F.W Palmer (also MM) near Courcelette in Feb 1917. There is a Roll of Honour in which the dates of death of the officers is given, but in the case of other ranks, they are grouped by companies for each year of the war without number, rank or date of death. There is also a list of recipients of honours and awards, headed by Palmer with his VC. This book was released on 2019-12-18 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historical record of the Seventh Regiment by Richard Cannon is an account of the seventh British Regiment during the English Civil War in 1685. Excerpt: "The natives of Britain have, at all periods, been celebrated for innate courage and unshaken firmness, and the national superiority of the British troops over those of other countries has been evinced amid the most imminent perils. History contains so many proofs of extraordinary acts of bravery, that no doubts can be raised about the facts which are recorded. It must therefore be admitted, that the distinguishing feature of the British soldier is Intrepidity. This quality was evinced by the inhabitants of England when their country was invaded by Julius Cæsar with a Roman army, on which occasion the undaunted Britons rushed into the sea to attack the Roman soldiers as they descended from their ships..."
Download or read book Kitcheners Army written by Peter Simkins and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2007-08-30 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numbering over five million men, Britain's army in the First World War was the biggest in the country's history. Remarkably, nearly half those men who served in it were volunteers. 2,466,719 men enlisted between August 1914 and December 1915, many in response to the appeals of the Field-Marshal Lord Kitchener. How did Britain succeed in creating a mass army, almost from scratch, in the middle of a major war ? What compelled so many men to volunteer ' and what happened to them once they had taken the King's shilling ? Peter Simkins describes how Kitchener's New Armies were raised and reviews the main political, economic and social effects of the recruiting campaign. He examines the experiences and impressions of the officers and men who made up the New Armies. As well as analysing their motives for enlisting, he explores how they were fed, housed, equipped and trained before they set off for active service abroad. Drawing upon a wide variety of sources, ranging from government papers to the diaries and letters of individual soldiers, he questions long-held assumptions about the 'rush to the colours' and the nature of patriotism in 1914. The book will be of interest not only to those studying social, political and economic history, but also to general readers who wish to know more about the story of Britain's citizen soldiers in the Great War.

Without exception they were filled with admiration of the physique, intelligence, and spirit of the men who had rushed to arms in those dark early days of the war. Book Synopsis Making Sense of the Great War by : Alex Mayhew
Download or read book Making Sense of the Great War written by Alex Mayhew and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-12-31 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First World War was an unprecedented crisis, with communities and societies enduring the unimaginable hardships of a prolonged conflict on an industrial scale. In Belgium and France, the terrible capacity of modern weaponry destroyed the natural world and exposed previously held truths about military morale and tactics as falsehoods. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers suffered some of the worst conditions that combatants have ever faced. How did they survive? What did it mean to them? How did they perceive these events? Whilst the trenches of the Western Front have come to symbolise the futility and hopelessness of the Great War, Alex Mayhew shows that English infantrymen rarely interpreted their experiences in this way. They sought to survive, navigated the crises that confronted them, and crafted meaningful narratives about their service. Making Sense of the Great War reveals the mechanisms that allowed them to do so.
