Book excerpt: Chaplain Bill Boice landed on D-Day, 6 June 1944, with the 22nd Infantry Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division and served with them as they fought across France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany until V-E Day on 8 May 1945. He was there for the D-Day invasion, the hedgerow fighting, the taking of the port at Cherbourg, the St. Lo breakout, the liberation of Paris, the crossing of the Siegfried Line, the bloody fight in the Hurtgen Forest, the Battle of the Bulge, and the final drive across Germany in the early months of 1945. On the ship returning from Europe to prepare for the invasion of Japan, Chaplain Boice formed the 22nd Infantry Regiment Society, an organization that still exists today as the rallying point for veterans of the 22nd Infantry Regiment from all wars to renew their wartime bonds and preserve their stories of fighting with the 22nd Infantry Regiment. Bill Boice took it upon himself to write this history of the 22nd Infantry Regiment in World War II, completing the work in 1956, eleven years after his release from the Army. Never formally published, this book is being published during the 80th anniversary year of the 22nd Infantry Regiment's and the 4th Infantry Division's fight across Europe in WWII. All profits from the sale of this book will be used to pay for more research into the history of both the 22nd Infantry Regiment "Deeds not Words!" and the 4th Infantry Division "Steadfast and Loyal."

Book excerpt: “The 22nd is very much a part of my life and had it not been for your journal I would have had no idea of its destiny and its ending. I am very grateful to you for this experience.”—John Cheever Scores of combat incidents and fascinating insights are to be found in “A Soldier’s Journal.” Rothbart provides unusual details of the 4th Division’s, and especially the 22nd Regiment’s, achievements and obstacles in the Allied advance from Normandy to Germany; D-Day Normandy, the breakthrough at St. Lo, the liberation of Paris, the German counterattack in the Ardennes and the Battle of the Bulge, and the bloody Hurtgen Forest battle.—The Trenton Times (NJ) “Rothbart’s meticulously- kept journal is an ‘I was there’ record of World War II. It is a valuable piece of American history.”—The Huntsville Times (AL) “From the day he was drafted in 1942...Rothbart did what many people plan but rarely follow up. He kept a journal, tightly pencilled entries in little notebooks that somehow caught history roaring by, and in remarkably readable style.”—Pittsburgh Tribune Review (PA) “Compelling reading . . . made more so by the many ‘slice of life’ portraits. . . of his time in the U.S. Army.”—John Gresham, bestselling co-author (with Tom Clancy) of Submarine and Special Forces.

Book excerpt: A century of valor among one of the finest infantry divisions ever to serve, vividly chronicled through extensive research and interviews with veterans. From the Great War to the War on Terror, the US 4th Infantry Division has always been there. To War with the 4th recounts a hundred years of combat, beginning with their first battle on September 14th, 1918. The men of the “Ivy” Division faced German artillery, fell in the hundreds, yet won the day. On D-Day of World War II, the 4th Division landed at Utah Beach and kept fighting across Europe until Germany surrendered. From Normandy to the Battle of the Bulge, no other American division suffered more casualties in the European theater, and no other division accomplished as much. In Vietnam, they executed dangerous “search and destroy” missions and fought major engagements, including thirty-three consecutive days of close-quarters combat during the Battle of Dak To. In May 2009, they fought in Iraq at the height of Operation Enduring Freedom. The 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team deployed to Afghanistan for a year-long combat mission in the birthplace of the Taliban. Through firsthand interviews with veterans across the decades, and the expert analysis of the authors, the role of one of America’s mainstay divisions is illuminated in these pages.

This book was released on 2016-03-28 with total page 675 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few units in the U.S. Army can boast as proud a unit history as the Third Infantry Division; it fought on all of the Europe and North African fronts that American soldiers were engaged against the Axis forces during World War II. The 3rd Infantry Division saw combat in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Germany and Austria for 531 consecutive days. In this official division history written by the officers who served with the unit at the time serves as a fascinating memorial and a detailed history of the “Marne Division” during World War II. The 3rd Inf. Division made landfall in Fedala on the 8th November 1942 as part of Operation Torch during the Allied invasion of North Africa and was engaged in heavy fighting before the German and Italian troops were finally levered out of the continent. The division was back in the thick of the fighting in Sicily under the command of such famous leaders as Generals Lucien Truscott, Omar Bradley and George S. Patton. As part of General Mark Clark’s U.S. Fifth army it engaged in some of the bloodiest engagements of the Italian campaign at Salerno beaches, Volturno river, Monte Cassino and Anzio. Under their old division commander General Truscott they formed part of the force that landed in Southern France and battled into the heart of Germany before the eventual capitulation of the Nazi High command in 1945. Richly illustrated with maps and pictures throughout.
