This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: AVETON GIFFORD. This is a large village, laying on the river Avon, from whence it derives its name?between Modbury and Kingsbridge. Here a considerable number of friends to Teetotalism reside; but, from a want of regular meetings, anda constant supply of advocates, the society has not made that progress, which, under other circumstances, it might have been expected to. Yet, amidst prejudice and open opposition, the Abstinence principle has not only been maintained by the few who first came forward to its support, but has also gained some ground; and by the assistance it is now likely to have in the advocacy of the Rev. Messrs. Woold- Hidge and Lakeman, preachers, in connexion with the Bible christians, there is a good reason to hope the society will not only augment its members, but also extend its influence into various parts of the neighbourhood. In August, 1841, this place was visited by Mr. Tkeleaven, and some friends from Kingsbridge, ?a large meeting was convened, and a goodly number signed the pledge. The friends believe through the kind aid of the Modbury and Kings- bridge Teetotalers, that the cause here will abundantly prosper. Many of our smaller societies suffer materially by placing too much dependence on foreign aid: were the friends in such places, indeed in every place, to shake off the bondage of diffidence and timidity, which too often and too long keeps them in silence on this subject, and begin, each according to his ability, to advocate and recommend the good cause, there cannot be a doubt but Teetotalism would be much strengthened among them, and enabled to extend its influence around. Some of the members hereare reclaimed drunkards, ?one, a young man, whose parents formerly kept a public-house, and whose conduct when a drunkard occasioned the keenest ment...
Download or read book Tavistock written by Gerry Woodcock and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2022-04-21 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tavistock has cast its spell over generations of visitors. Attractively set between two significant natural barriers, the River Tamar to the west and Dartmoor to the east, residents and visitors today would still recognise the truth of what one impressed tourist wrote in 1892: 'The town has a leisurely and beautiful appearance, and the people do not seem to need to kill themselves and slay each other in the mad rush of life which spoils so many other towns.' However, being relaxed is not the same as being sleepy. The economic and social life of the town has, at each stage of its development, been dynamic. The designation 'Ancient Stannary Town' on the welcoming road signs, for example, is a reminder of the long association with the tin industry, and the oft-quoted description 'The Gothic town of the West' brings to mind the great age of copper mining and the changes to the town centre that accompanied it. This fully illustrated account brings the modern resident and visitor face to face with the factors that have influenced the development of this unique and fascinating corner of Devon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attitudes toward alcohol?and the extent and rate of its consumption?have undergone considerable changes over the centuries. In the face of contemporary concern with increased drinking, Alcohol and Moral Regulation offers a refreshing historical perspective, explaining that anxieties about alcohol are perhaps best understood as a ?hangover” from the Victorian period. Drawing on extensive historical research, the volume puts contemporary attitudes in context, and thus gives scholars and policy makers alike a more nuanced way to approach analyses of, and approaches to, contemporary drinking.
Book Synopsis Moral Panics in the Contemporary World by : Julian Petley
Download or read book Moral Panics in the Contemporary World written by Julian Petley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-05-19 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moral Panics in the Contemporary World represents the best current theoretical and empirical work on the topic, taken from the international conference on moral panics held at Brunel University. The range of contributors, from established scholars to emerging ones in the field, and from a working journalist as well, helps to cover a wide range of moral panics, both old and new, and extend the geographical scope of moral panic analysis to previously underrepresented areas. Designed from the outset to comprise a coherent and integrated set of viewpoints which share a common engagement with critically exploring moral panics in the contemporary world, it contains case studies instantly recognisable and familiar to a student readership (drugs, alcohol, sexual abuse and racism). The collection brings a fresh approach to analysis and argument by testing and extending the concept of moral panic and analyzing a range of topics and geographical contexts, accurately reflecting the state-of-the-art moral panics research today.
