Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Stark County: With an Outline Sketch of Ohio North of this ridge the surface is generally level, with a gentle inclination toward the lake, the ine qualities of the surface being caused by the streams which empty into the lake. The central part of Ohio is almost, in general, a level plain, about one thousand feet above the level of the sea, slightly inclining southward. The Southern part of the State is rather hilly, e valleys growing deeper as they incline toward the great valley of the Ohio, which is several hundred feet below the general level of the State. In the southern counties, the surface is generally diversified by the inequalities produced by the excavating power of the Ohio River and its tributaries, exercised through long periods of time. There are afew prairies, or plains, in the central and northwestern parts of the State, but over its greater portion originally existed im mense growths of timber. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the peak of his career in Cincinnati, Ohio, German-American Joseph A. Hemann provided details for his biographical sketch published in 1876. From this we learn of his early life as a student, his Atlantic crossing to Baltimore, his journey across the Alleghenies, his first teaching job, meeting his life-long mate, becoming a newspaper publisher and finally a banker. He was socially active in the Queen City of the West for almost forty years until a devastating sequence of events drove him out of town. This publication provides both genealogical facts and an expanded biography of Hemann’s life as a German immigrant and successful business man in Cincinnati before, during, and after the Civil War. In Section Four, the 19th century German language newspapers of Cincinnati are summarized including graphical images of the mastheads.
Book Synopsis In the Shadow of the Hawk by : Josephine B. Curry
Download or read book In the Shadow of the Hawk written by Josephine B. Curry and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2004 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book carries the reader back to the early years of World War II. It is centered on an insightful American woman's daily experience, recorded in her diary from 1939 to 1942, wherein personal reflections and epic thrust yield an intriguing sense of plot. Author Lester Bartson draws on many external sources in order to bring to life the diarist's interesting native city of Canton, Ohio, her subsequent service as a WAC during the liberation of France, and postwar initiatives in Nova Scotia. Bartson uses recently discovered original material to piece together the poignant story of her husband, a Canadian RAF pilot during the First World War. Historical and cultural issues are given perspective by richly interactive notes, a broadly based Introduction, reflective Epilogue, thematic Index, and more than fifty individual illustrations.
Book Synopsis States at War, Volume 5 by : Richard F. Miller
Download or read book States at War, Volume 5 written by Richard F. Miller and published by University Press of New England. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many Civil War reference books exist, there is no single compendium that contains important details about the combatant states (and territories) that Civil War researchers can readily access for their work. People looking for information about the organizations, activities, economies, demographics, and prominent personalities of Civil War States and state governments must assemble data from a variety of sources, with many key sources remaining unavailable online. This crucial reference book, the fifth in the States at War series, provides vital information on the organization, activities, economies, demographics, and prominent personalities of Ohio during the Civil War. Its principal sources include the Official Records, state adjutant-general reports, legislative journals, state and federal legislation, federal and state executive speeches and proclamations, and the general and special orders issued by the military authorities of both governments, North and South. Designed and organized for easy use by professional historians and amateurs, this book can be read in two ways: by individual state, with each chapter offering a stand-alone history of an individual stateÕs war years; or across states, comparing reactions to the same event or solutions to the same problems.
