Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boer and Britisher in South Africa: A History of the Boer-British War and the Wars for United South Africa, Together With Biographies, of the Great Men Who Made the History of South Africa The people of South Africa are often judged wrongly, especially in England, where every one cannot rise to the unprejudiced point of view of the great Gladstone, who could appreciate the worth of these people, who, to pre serve their freedom, left their former homes in Cape Colony and strove for an independent existence in the desolate, wild country inhabited only by hostile savages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the War in South Africa: Containing an Authentic Account of the Great Struggle Between the British and the Boers The English Army and the Boers have met in the shock of battle in South Africa. All attempts to avert the desperate conflict have failed and the eyes of the whole world are turned to watch the progress of the fierce struggle. The first settlement of the Boers in South Africa - another name for Dutch inhabitants - dates from the sixteenth century. They have received accessions from the Huguenots of France, but retain the old Dutch character. After the final cession of the Cape of Good Hope to England in.i§14 they disliked the new Govern ment, especially its friendly policy to the natives and the emancipa tion of the slaves in 1833, the Boers having long been slaveholders. They moved northward and occupied the Orange Free State and the Transvaal. The Boers are the landholders and farmers of South Africa, famous for their courage and endurance, of strong and well developed physique, good horsemen and splendid marksmen. They have proved themselves to be terrible fighters on many occasions. Previous to 1870 the Boers had much trouble with the surrounding native tribes, which resulted in many sanguinary battles. Wars were of frequent occurrence and little progress was made in the development of the country. The selfish policy of the Boers caused constant irritation with England. In 1877, owing to an exhausted public treasury and accumulated debts brought about by conflicts with the Zulus and other tribes, the Transvaal, or South African Republic, was on the eve of dissolution and the country about to relapse into barbarism. To avert this catastrophe the British Government assumed the care of it, subjugated the rebel lious natives, and put the finances of the State in good condition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Boer War: A Two Years Record 1899-1901 The book was begun in England and continued on board a steamer, but the greater part was written in a hospital tent in the intervals of duty during the epidemic at Bloemfontein. Often the only documents which I had to consult were the convalescent officers and men who were under our care. Under these circum stances some errors may have crept in, but on the other hand I have had the inestimable advantage of visiting the scene of this great drama, of meeting many of the chief actors in it, and of seeing with my own eyes some thing of the actual operations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Naval Brigades in the South African War, 1899-1900 Despite the fact that so much has already been written on the subject, I feel assured that this little contribution to the history Of the struggle in South Africa needs neither explanation nor excuse. It is the story Of how, at a time when their comrades of the land service were in dire need of help, the seamen hastened to place their ships' guns on improvised carriages, took them ash ore, and in the nick of tims enabled our military forces to cope on equal terms with the Boer artillery. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Times History of the War in South Africa, 1899-1902, Vol. 5 The military aim which the British people and the British Army had set before themselves at the outbreak of the war had been achieved, and more than achieved, by the close of the first year. In his great marches, from Modder River Camp to the Portuguese frontier, Lord Roberts had swept away the stubborn resistance of the Boer armies, had triumphantly occupied all the chief towns of the two Republics, and had securely established himself upon the great arteries of communication. After Komati Poort there was no longer a single compact, centrally organised and centrally equipped Boer force in the field; the Boer artillery had almost disappeared; on every side the burghers were coming in to assure the conquerors that the surrender of those who were still in arms was but a matter of a few days or at the outside weeks. Few, indeed, there were who recognised that the British aim had been set too low, or understood the magnitude and character of the task that still lay between Lord Kitchener and the realisation of the national purpose expressed in the formal annexation of the Republics.
