Book excerpt: Excerpt from Livy's History of Rome, Vol. 1: The First Five Books Though thus commissioned and paid for by the king, it is improbable that the work was ever much in request, and only two copies of it seem to be preserved. F ortun ately one of these is excellent, and its slight defects are so well supplemented by the other, that it is possible to give a text which is practically complete, and of which the correctness can seldom be called in question. From the Abruzzi the chain continues in a southerly direction, at first undivided and of Considerable height; after a depression which forms a hill-country, it splits into a somewhat attened succes sion of heights towards the south-east, and a more rugged chain towards the south, and in both directions terminates in the formation of narrow peninsulas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Rome, Vol. 1: Books I.-XX IN this new English version of the most elegant of the Roman historians the object of the translatorhas been to adhere as closely to the original text as is consistent with the idioms of the respective languages. But while thus providing more especially for the wants of the classical student, he has not been unmindful of the neatness and perspicuity required to satisfy the English reader. There have been several previous translations of our author, but the only one now before the public, or deserv ing of particular mention, is that by Baker, which is un doubtedly a very able performance, and, had it been more faithful, would have rendered any other unnecessary. The edition used for the present translation is that pub lished at Oxford under the superintendence of Travers Twiss, Whose carefully-revised text is by far the 'best ex tant. The few notes and illustrations which the limits of an edition in this popular form permit are chie y confined to the explanation of grammatical difficulties. Historical and antiquarian illustration is now so abundantly supplied by excellent Manuals and Dictionaries, that it has been deemed unnecessary to swell the present volumes by ad ditions in that department. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Rome, Vol. 1 of 6 He appears to have conceived the project of writing his history, immediately upon his settling at Rome; or, perhaps, he came thither for the purpose of collecting the necessary materials for that great work. Augustus appointed him preceptor to his grandson Claudius, afterwards emperor. But he seems not much to have attended to the advantage which might have resulted from so advantageous a connection, and to have occupied himself, entirely, in the composition of his history; parts of which, as they were finished, he read to Augustus and Macanas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Rome, Vol. 1: For the Use of Schools IN the volume now offered to the public, it is the intention of the author to connect the most important events of Roman history, from the foundation of Rome to the death of Constantine. That these events may be more easily fixed upon the memory, it is thought advisable to separate the narrative into three parts. Part I. Is confined to that period known as the monarchy, which, although very properly regarded as wholly fabulous, is the only foundation that can be obtained for a history upon whose pages almost all the nations of the earth appear. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Rome, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Foundation of the City of Rome, to the Destruction of the Western Empire There are some subjects on which a writer must decline all attempts to acquire fame, satis fied with being obscurely useful. After such a number of Roman Histories, in all languages, ancient and modern, it would be but imposture to pretend new discoveries, or to expect to offer any thing in a work of this kind, which has not been often anticipated by others. The facts which it relates have'been a hundred times repeated, and every occurrence has been so variously considered, that learning can scarce find a new anecdote, or genius give novelty to the old. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Rome, and of the Roman People, Vol. 1: From Its Origin to the Invasion of the Barbarians The account of the early reforms in the Constitution, and of the relations of the Three Assemblies, are so totally opposed to the accounts in ordinary English histories, that the thoughtful reader is completely at a loss to find out when all these novelties were discovered, or how they are to be justified. An edition of this fine book, with some such information in foot-notes, would have made it a work of far greater value; for it represents a school of thought which is as yet quite foreign to England, and which, under the able expositions of Rubino, Mommsen, Soltau, and others, bids fair to displace the views of Niebuhr, even when corrected and modified by Schwegler, Lange, and Clason.1 But as yet these matters are within the field of controversy; and to assume all his own views as proved may indeed be admitted as lawful in the historian, but cannot be regarded as satisfactory in a work professing to give all the facts of Roman history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Child's History of Rome, Vol. 1 of 2 It was a very famous place, the Forum; and I have said this much about it in order that you may have some picture of it in your eye when you hear it mentioned in this history. There were many temples at Rome, but as they long ago crumbled into dust, we know little or no thing about them. There was an aqueduct, called the Appian Aqueduct after its builder, an old Ro man named Aprwe claudius, about whom there were many famous stories. This aqueduct brought water to the city from a source eight miles off. And there was a great drain, which, I think, was the most wonderful work of ancient Rome. People said it had been built by an old king of Rome, whose name was servius tullius, two hundred years ago and more: any how, it was very old, and so wide that a cart and horse could drive through it, and so strong that it does its duty still, and not a stone of it has mouldered away. I wonder how our drains will look two thousand years hence! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
