Book excerpt: Quincy, Illinois, is located on the Mississippi River about 20 miles north of Hannibal, Missouri, and 100 miles west of Springfield, the state capital. Both Quincy and the county in which it lies, Adams, were named for President John Quincy Adams. In 1822, a man named John Wood built a cabin at the foot of what would later become Delaware Street, near the Mississippi River. As more people came, the village grew eastward from that spot. Many German and Irish immigrants came to Quincy, along with pioneers moving from Kentucky and Virginia. These settlers were lured to the area by reports of the lush land called the "Jewel of the West," which was later called "The Gem City." Industrialists came from New York and other Eastern states and built many of the stately homes on Maine Street and the adjacent streets. Early industry in Quincy included pork packing, tobacco processing, paper making, stove making, carriage making, the ice industry, and lumberyards.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Quincy and Its Men of Mark: Or Facts and Figures Exhibiting Its Advantages and Resources, Manufactures, and Commerce After devoting a large share of time and labor to this work, the author offers it to the public not as a complete history of Quincy, but as the best that he was enabled under the circumstances to compile. The effort to furnish a detailed review of the commerce and manufactures of a city of Quincy's size, is necessarily attended with greater difficulty and labor than would such an undertaking in the great cities of the Union, where Boards of Trade flourish, and where statistics of the manufactures and sales of every depart ment are annually prepared and preserved for reference. Yet, notwithstanding, the want of such facilities for obtaining inform ation has been seriously felt, and added materially to our labors, We have still, through the assistance of our leading business men, obtained accurate statistics of the transactions in most of the im portant departments, and submit them to the citizens of Quincy and to our readers generally, as an evidence of the prosperity which has been wrought by the energy, enterprise and deter mination of our business men. For much, and in fact most of the information here submitted, we are of course indebted to the old residents of Quincy, who have grown with it, and whose industry, ability, and public spirit car ried it safely through all the vicissitudes, from a frontier settle ment to a prosperous and wealthy city. The biographies here given to the public will be recognized by many as truthful sketches of leading and influential citizens, who by their sagacity and perseverance carved out their own fortunes, and will enable those not familiar with the progress of Quincy to form an idea of the men to whom she is indebted for her present position as a commercial and manufacturing center. Book excerpt: Though there are slightly more than six million Hmong worldwide, relatively few Americans know much about them. The Hmong people, who steadfastly retained many of their cultural traditions though they settled extensively in China, were forced to become perpetual migrants and montagnards, due to relentless persecution by the Chinese, who considered all but Chinese culture uncivilized. Most Hmong today live in China, Laos, northern Vietnam, Thailand, and Burma, and are all descendants (it is speculated) of Hmong who originally migrated from central Siberia. Hmong: History of a People is a detailed rediscovery of their saga, following Hmong history and tradition from their early settlements in China, up to and including much of their contribution to the war in Vietnam. It is a book of struggle, prowess, and magic, and it reiterates the importance of cultural memory for any race and specifically the importance of the memory for the Hmong.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Quincy, Illinois: Containing Historical Events, Anecdotes, Matters Concerning Old Settlers and Old Times, Etc The County of Madison, the present boundaries of which lie on the east side of the Illinois river, was organized by proclama mation of Gov. Edwards, March 14, 1812. The County em braced all the territory lying north of a line beginning on the Mississippi river, with the second township line above Cahokia, and running east to the Indiana territory - this boundary of Madison County thus embraced all the country north of its south line, and including the whole Military Tract as the same was afterwards surveyed. An act to form a new county on the Bounty Lands was ap proved Jan. 21, 1821. It defined the boundaries of Pike County as beginning at the mouth of the Illinois river and running thence up the middle of said river to the fork of the same, thence up the south fork of said river until it strikes the State line of Indiana, thence north with said line to the north boundary line of this State, thence west with said line to the west boundary line of this State and thence with said boundary line to the place of beginning. Adams argues that he served as the central architect of a grand strategy whose ideas and policies made him a critical link between the founding generation and the Civil War–era nation of Lincoln.
