Excerpt: ... only to take that number which forms the tenth in the series. It is also evident, that these numhers of the terms are also the indices of the powers of the common multiplier, which enter into each term respectively. This is the leading idea which may be supposed suggested by a passage in Archimedes. Thus, if our computations always involved no other numbers than such as are terms in a geometrical progression, we should only have to add the indices, and thus be led directly to the product; or, conversely, to subtract them, and find the term which is the quotient. Again, by doubling, tripling, &c. the indices, we should find their products indicating a term which would be respectively the square, cube, &c.of the original term; and, conversely, we should have the square, cube, &c. roots. Thus far all was sufficiently clear and simple. But here arose the main difficulty: this would apply only to a very few limited systems of numbers, and could not be of any general practical utility. The grand discovery of Napier, therefore, amounted to this: --that a geometrical progression may be found in which All the natural numbers are terms. Of the methods by which he arrived at this conclusion, or of the general principle on which such a series can be assigned, we cannot here say much; but we may sufficiently illustrate it by an example. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Natural Philosophy From the Earliest Periods to the Present Time "in primis, hominis est propria veri inquisitio atque investigate. Before an other things, man is distinguished by his pursuit and investigation of truth. And hence, when free from needful business and cares, we delight to see, to hear, and to communicate, and consider a knowledge of many admirable and abstruse things necessary to the good conduct and happiness of our lives: whence it is clear that whatsoever is true, simple, and direct, the same is most congenial to our nature as men. Closely allied with this earnest longing to see and know the truth, is a kind of dignified and princely sentiment which forbids a mind, naturally well constituted, to submit its faculties to any but those who announce it in precept or in doctrine, or to yield obedience to any orders but such as are at once just, lawful, and founded on utility. From this source spring greatness of mind and contempt of worldly advantages and troubles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Early Modern Medicine and Natural Philosophy by : Peter Distelzweig
Download or read book Early Modern Medicine and Natural Philosophy written by Peter Distelzweig and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents an innovative look at early modern medicine and natural philosophy as historically interrelated developments. The individual chapters chart this interrelation in a variety of contexts, from the Humanists who drew on Hippocrates, Galen, and Aristotle to answer philosophical and medical questions, to medical debates on the limits and power of mechanism, and on to eighteenth-century controversies over medical materialism and 'atheism.' The work presented here broadens our understanding of both philosophy and medicine in this period by illustrating the ways these disciplines were in deep theoretical and methodological dialogue and by demonstrating the importance of this dialogue for understanding their history. Taken together, these papers argue that to overlook the medical context of natural philosophy and the philosophical context of medicine is to overlook fundamentally important aspects of these intellectual endeavors.
Book Synopsis Time and the Science of the Soul in Early Modern Philosophy by : Michael Edwards
Download or read book Time and the Science of the Soul in Early Modern Philosophy written by Michael Edwards and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-09-20 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many early modern philosophers, particularly those influenced by Aristotle’s Physics and De anima, time had an intimate connection to the human rational soul. This connection had wide-ranging implications for metaphysics, natural philosophy and politics: at its heart was the assumption that man was not only a rational, but also a temporal, animal. In Time and the Science of the Soul in Early Modern Philosophy, Michael Edwards traces this connection from late Aristotelian commentaries and philosophical textbooks to the natural and political philosophy of two of the best-known ‘new philosophers’ of the seventeenth century, Thomas Hobbes and René Descartes. The book demonstrates both time’s importance as a philosophical problem, and the intellectual fertility and continued relevance of Aristotelian philosophy into the seventeenth century.
Book Synopsis A Natural History of Time by : Pascal Richet
Download or read book A Natural History of Time written by Pascal Richet and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quest to pinpoint the age of the Earth is nearly as old as humanity itself. For most of history, people trusted mythology or religion to provide the answer, even though nature abounds with clues to the past of the Earth and the stars. In A Natural History of Time, geophysicist Pascal Richet tells the fascinating story of how scientists and philosophers examined those clues and from them built a chronological scale that has made it possible to reconstruct the history of nature itself. Richet begins his story with mythological traditions, which were heavily influenced by the seasons and almost uniformly viewed time cyclically. The linear history promulgated by Judaism, with its story of creation, was an exception, and it was that tradition that drove early Christian attempts to date the Earth. For instance, in 169 CE, the bishop of Antioch, for instance declared that the world had been in existence for “5,698 years and the odd months and days.” Until the mid-eighteenth century, such natural timescales derived from biblical chronologies prevailed, but, Richet demonstrates, with the Scientific Revolution geological and astronomical evidence for much longer timescales began to accumulate. Fossils and the developing science of geology provided compelling evidence for periods of millions and millions of years—a scale that even scientists had difficulty grasping. By the end of the twentieth century, new tools such as radiometric dating had demonstrated that the solar system is four and a half billion years old, and the universe itself about twice that, though controversial questions remain. The quest for time is a story of ingenuity and determination, and like a geologist, Pascal Richet carefully peels back the strata of that history, giving us a chance to marvel at each layer and truly appreciate how far our knowledge—and our planet—have come.
Book Synopsis Vegetative Powers by : Fabrizio Baldassarri
Download or read book Vegetative Powers written by Fabrizio Baldassarri and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume analyzes the natural philosophical accounts and debates concerning the vegetative powers, namely nutrition, growth, and reproduction. While principally focusing on the early modern approaches to the lower functions of the soul, readers will discover the roots of these approaches back to the Ancient times, as the volume highlights the role of three strands that help shape the study of life in the Medieval and early modern natural philosophies. From late antiquity to the early modern period, the vegetative soul and its cognate concepts have played a substantial role in specifying life, living functions, and living bodies, sometimes blurring the line between living and non-living nature, and, at other moments, resulting in a strong restriction of life to a mechanical system of operations and powers. Unearthing the history of the vegetative soul as a shrub of interconnected concepts, the 24 contributions of the volume fill a crucial gap in scholarship, ultimately outlining the importance of vegetal processes of incessant proliferation, generation, and organic growth as the roots of life in natural philosophical interpretations.
