Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Modern Italian Art IN writing this book I trust that I have not taken a wholly one-sided view of my subject. I certainly have not been conscious of any wish either to de monstrate that the art-work of the period under con sideration was wholly good or that it was wholly bad. At the beginning I shared the feeling which we all have to some extent, that modern Italian art was degenerate, far removed in its standards and in its results from the art of the best period; but much study of the subject has led me to alter that view very materially. No one could have followed my line of work, step by step, without becoming convinced that the common feeling, to which I have alluded, was based to a certain extent upon prejudice and lack of information, and that a more generous attitude ought to be taken toward the men who, in the face of many discouragements, have so bravely struggled to redeem the art of the peninsula from the reproach which has been cast upon it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Midsummer of Italian Art IN the first edition of Midsummer I stated that my Object was to provide a comprehensive account of the greatest Italian painters, which might serve both as a book Of reference for American travellers in Europe, and to revive the recollections Of what they had seen after their return. In revising my book I have consid ered the request Of my friends and critics for a more thorough and complete analysis of the works of Raphael and Michel Angelo, as the two artists in whom the pub lic takes the liveliest interest. I have also amended the account Of Leonardo da Vinci so as to introduce a state ment of every picture which can be ascribed to him on reasonable grounds. Certain additions have also been made to the account of Correggio, but the similarity of his designs makes a complete list of his paintings of less importance than the others. In order to make the book as perfect as possible, I have compared my previous statements with those of the most distinguished writers on the subject, and where I became satisfied that I was formerly in error I have made such changes as were necessary, giving credit to the proper authority in a foot-note. This applies, how ever, chiefly to the account of Raphael, and in a less degree to Leonardo and Correggio. There is no thor ough-going criticism of Michel Angelo's works that I can hear of, in any language, and my own statement would seem to be the first attempt in that direction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Artist of the Italian Renaissance: Translated From the Chroniclers Some explanation is perhaps necessary of the plan and method of this book. My subject is the Italian artists as theylwere affected by the political history of their land, sometimes them selves taking part actively. In the stirring events of the time, and sometimes swept away and their works submerged by the torrent of disaster. The rise of art in Italy has always been connected with the rise of the cities in riches and prosperity, and the eager impetuosity which displayed itself in their fierce rivalry was as manifest in the con tests of art as in war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of the Woodcut in the Italian Renaissance Book Planck has illustrated this edition with a series of full-page woodcuts.they stand across from and next to the text but do not comment upon it or connect more intimately with it. Rather, they are traditional devotional images put into printed books. Each is a portrait within borders of suitable iconography that expands the image beyond the central figure. Here, an archer sends an arrow from the border into the principal image to add it there to St. Sebastian's sufferingsanother cut employs tiny devotional figures in the four corners of the border in addition to its central portrait of the Virgin Mary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of the Italian Artists From Vasari His treatment of Raphael has been attributed to prejudice, and indeed he was such a devoted disciple of Michael Angelo, and so vain of his intimacy with the great man, that his judgment could scarcely be unbiassed. Many great names will be missed here, for Vasari's account is often confined to a bare description of the painter's works with a meagre outline of his life; and it must not be forgotten that he did not carry on his history to the later painters, such as Tintoretto and Veronese. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civilisation of the Renaissance in Italy Dr. Burckhardt's work on the Renaissance in Italy is too well known, not only to students of the period, but now to a wider circle of readers, for any introduction to be necessary. The increased interest which has of late years, in England, been taken in this and kindred subjects, and the welcome which has been given to the works of other writers upon them, encourage me to hope that in publishing this translation I am meeting a want felt by some who are either unable to read German at all, or to whom an English version will save a good deal of time and trouble. The translation is made from the third edition of the original, recently published in Germany, with slight additions to the text, and large additions to the notes, by Dr. Ludwig Geiger, of Berlin. It also contains some fresh matter communicated by Dr. Burckhardt to Professor Diego Valbusa of Mantua, the Italian translator of the book. To all three gentlemen my thanks are due for courtesy shown, or help given to me in the course of my work.
