Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Marshfield The author was somewhat surprised (and he thinks the reader will be also) to hnd when searching through libraries and records, for matter for this work, that Marshfield in the historic growth of the country, was not so much engaged in the processes of legal enactments, as in being the harbor, the stronghold and the home of our greatest men, who gave birth, stability and strength to the powerful government under which we live. Garrett in his book, The Pilgrim Shore, in speaking of Marshfield says: An old town that has been truly said, shares with Plymouth the interest that attaches to the early home of the Pilgrims. And sure enough, why should we not claim for Marshfield the second place in the history of the Pilgrims, as the home of the most prominent officials of that period, and the same may be said of Duxbury, but not of any other town. Before Marshfield became fixed as the name of our town, it was given three or four names, such as Missaucatucket, the name known by the Indians, Green's Harbour, Rexham, and before the landing of the Pilgrims, when Capt. John Smith sailed along the New England Coast, it was called Oxford. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Marshfield, a seaside retreat famous for its beaches, hotels, and ocean views, has always shone in summer. It was the home of some of the country's leading families, specifically the Winslows and the Websters, and worldrenowned concert singer Adelaide Phillips, as well as the site of the first radio broadcast in America, engineered by Reginald Fessenden at Brant Rock on Christmas Eve 1906. Today the town's various villages retain the identities that defined them in the early 1900s, from hardworking Green Harbor to beachy Brant Rock to serene Sea View to the rolling Marshfield Hills. Marshfield has celebrated its heroes, survived the great Ocean Bluff fire of 1941, and, most importantly, preserved its history through several historic preservation projects around town.

Named after Daniel Webster's hometown of Marshfield, Massachusetts, the rural community was the birthplace of world-renowned astronomer Edwin P. Hubble. Today, the town is hailed as a favored stop on Route 66 and celebrates the longest-running Independence Day celebration west of the Mississippi River. Over 150 years after it was established, Marshfield is still going strong and creating history that will live for years to come. T he Images of America series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today. Arcadia is proud to play a part in the preservation of local heritage, making history available to all.

Book excerpt: The colorful boyhood of a popular author comes to life in this personal account Imagine learning from a nosy classmate that your mother is having yet another baby. To Ralph's classmates, news of one more Fletcher baby is just "scuttlebutt." But for Ralph, the oldest of nine, being part of a large family means more kids to join in the fun—from making tripods in the woods and "snicking" up the rug, to raising chicks and even discovering a meteor (well, maybe). It doesn't feel like there's life beyond Marshfield, Massachusetts. Then one day Dad's new job moves the family to Chicago, and there's so much Ralph has to leave behind. In this humorous and captivating memoir, Ralph Fletcher traces the roots of his storytelling.
