Book excerpt: From the linga of Shiva to ritual lamps, from a Vishnu temple to a heap of stones streaked with sacred vermilion, from illustrations of the epic adventures of Rama to a terracotta goddess figurine, the art Hinduism has inspired over the centuries is as rich and various as the religion itself - and, for most Westerners, as unknown. Hindu Art offers a key to this mystery. A splendid, richly illustrated introduction, the book opens to readers the manifold glories of the religious art of the Indian subcontinent. The narratives that Hindu artists illustrate, the gods they depict, and the forms they observe are the products of thousands of years of tradition and development. In a survey that stretches back to prehistory, T. Richard Blurton discusses religious, cultural and historical influences that figure in Hindu art, as well as those that Hinduism shares with Buddhism and Jainism. Tracing the development of Hindu art, he shows how it has come to embrace the widely varying styles of regions from Nepal to Afghanistan, from Sri Lanka to Bangladesh. Against this historical background, Blurton considers the use of images from the three major cults of Hinduism - the worship of Shiva, Vishnu and the Great Goddess - in painting, sculpture and temple architecture. As fascinating as it is informative, Hindu Art offers invaluable insight into one of the world's great and ancient cultures. It will prove an indispensable resource for anyone with an interest in the art of India.

This book was released on 1983 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serious study of the art of India began only in the nineteenth century. This small volume provides a masterly overview of the scholarship of the past century and a half. Mr. Chandra's purpose is twofold: to help present–day students understand their scholarly heritage, and to encourage them to re-examine their own methods and assumptions. His histographical approach enables him to pay tribute to the great achievements of the pioneers in the field and also to notice the manner in which errors of fact and method have crept into some of the contemporary thinking and writing on the subject. Rather than attempt to discuss the writings of every scholar of note, he restricts himself to a few whose work, in his opinion, clearly represents the various stages of the development of the discipline. In analyzing their contributions, he concentrates on the broad methodological thrust of their work and not on the details of their conclusions. The study of architecture is considered first, because it was regarded by the ancient Indians as the most important of the visual arts and was the earliest of the arts to receive careful, analytic treatment in modern times. Sculpture is taken up second, and last the study of Indian painting, the area in which the most remarkable progress has been made in the last twenty–five years. In the course of the discussion many topics of broad interest are touched upon, including the relation of art history to the other disciplines, problems presented by various methods of classification, iconography and iconology, the relevance of style, the meaning of form, and the connection between artists and patrons.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive catalogue on temple sculptures from North India from the 8th to the 13th centuries, featuring rare stone sculptures from Indian and American museum and private collections. It studies the complexity of diverse forms in a medieval Indian temple as well as fluid functional relationship between different types of forms. It also examines the plethora of forms that grace temple walls and interiors, and studies them as individual, aesthetic objects in a narrowly defined art-historical sense and to place them in a more comprehensive architectural, religious and cultural context.

Book excerpt: This work ventures to study Indian Art and Architecture with reference to, and in the context of, its theory which, though available to us in Sanskrit texts, is not generally studied and it is essentially a study of the Theory of SILPA (Indian Plastic Arts) from the Ancient to Medieval times. The first Chapter studies 'Mithuna' in the temple forum. Overwhelming textual prescriptions affirm that Devangana Mithuna sculptures both in Dance and Kama (Erotic) postures are incarnation of Srngara. Roct Cut Temple Architecture has been studied in the next chapter. A Saila Guha (Cave) is excavated into the living rock while a saila mandira is carved out of the Rock; independent and structural, it has all the four facades and a grand superstructure open to sky. another chapter is devoted to the study of sculptural aestheticism. Iconography prescribed the figure and its broad outlines, and sometimes the posture too with weapons and ornaments but it did not prescribe the depth of the sculpture in the third dimension, and the sculptor was free to bring out an expression. The chapter on Lahara Vallari is study of a formal ornament in Indian Art. It has no floral element and it rises and falls like wave and moves forth with exquisite grace like a sinuous scroll. The Chapter on the Inter relationship of the Performing and the Plastic Arts is devoted to the study of non iconographic devangana sculptures. The last chapter deals with lotus fountain of the Rang Mahal Red Fort DELHI of Shah Jehan 1628-58 A.D, which is unique creation of Indian Sculptor during the Medieval Period. Its petals appear to rise and fall when water ripples on their edges like a magical charisma.
