Book excerpt: Includes the First World War Illustrations Pack – 73 battle plans and diagrams and 198 photos Colonel Sir Stephen Allen recounts, with justified pride the history of the 2nd Battalion of the Auckland Regiment, 2/Auckland for short, during the last year of the war. The 2nd Battalion formed part of the New Zealand Division and had seen much action since arriving in France in 1916; at the Battles of the Somme, Fleubaix, Messines and at Third Ypres. However the signal services of the 2/Auckland in 1918 are fully deserving of this separate tome; during the German Spring Offensives they were thrown into the line to stem the enemy advance and were the first troops to make a morale raising counterattack at La Signy Farm. As the German Army started to crack in the summer of 1918, 2/Auckland where among the foremost pursuers; at Welsh Ridge, Le Quesnoy.

This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains over 55 photos and 10 maps. “The record of a New Zealand infantry regiment in Egypt, at Gallipoli and on the Western Front, from formation to disbandment....When the force sailed on 14 October 1914, the embarkation strength of the Otago Battalion was 34 officers and 1,076 other ranks....In April 1915 the division sailed for Gallipoli via Mudros, and on the 25th of that month the Otago Battalion landed with the brigade near Anzac Cove. The battalion was eight months at Gallipoli, fighting in several actions, particularly the second battle of Krithia and the battle of Sari Bair. It was evacuated in December 1915 and returned to Egypt where a 2nd Battalion was formed for each of the four original battalions and the combined New Zealand and Australian Division was reorganized as an all New Zealand Division which crossed to France in April 1916...On the Western Front the New Zealand Division was an elite formation and the regiment was involved in most of the major operations - the Somme, Messines, Third Ypres and the battles of 1918. Two VCs were won including one of the most famous, that awarded to Sgt Travis (real name Savage) of the 2nd Battalion, known as the king of No Man’s Land, who was killed in Rossignol Wood in July 1918 and is buried in Couin New British Cemetery; the divisional commander attended his funeral. He gets a chapter to himself in the book. This is a good, authoritative history as the title suggests, in which personalities are identified in the narrative, casualty figures and reinforcements noted; minor actions are described as well as the bigger picture."—N&M Print ed.

Book Synopsis THE NEW ZEALANDERS AT GALLIPOLI - An Account of the New Zealand Forces during the Gallipoli Campaign by : Major Fred Waite
Download or read book THE NEW ZEALANDERS AT GALLIPOLI - An Account of the New Zealand Forces during the Gallipoli Campaign written by Major Fred Waite and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-10-06 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The New Zealanders at Gallipoli," was researched and compiled by Major Fred Waite (21 August 1885 – 29 August 1952), D.S.O., N.Z.E., C.M.G., V.D., who served with the main body and the N.Z. & A. Division as a Staff Officer of Engineers during the Great War. During the Second World War, Waite was overseas commissioner for the National Patriotic Fund Board and was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his services in this role. In the introduction he wrote “These popular histories of New Zealand's share in the Great War are designed to present to the people of New Zealand the inspiring record of the work of our sons and daughters overseas.” The movements of the ANZACs are traced from their various points of departure around New Zealand, via Australia to Colombo, Aden and through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal to eventual disembarkation at Alexandria, Egypt. After a spell of training in Egypt, the Anzacs were shipped across the Mediterranean to the Gallipoli peninsula in the Dardanelles in Northwest Turkey with an objective to capturing the peninsula as a prelude to invading Turkey and capturing Istanbul. Waite details the landing of the ANZACs on 25 April 1915, the many skirmishes and drives to get the “upper hand” and the eventual evacuation in December 1915. Also included are many photographs of the terrain, encampments and maps to put the images into context, all of which give the reader a good feel for layout and the conditions being experienced by the troops. To this day, 25 April is celebrated in New Zealand and Australia as "Anzac Day". The Dardanelles were known in Classical Antiquity as the Hellespont, and in effect forms the continental boundary between Europe and Asia. Their importance was recognised as far back as 482BC. Herodotus tells us that at this time Xerxes I of Persia (the son of Darius the Great) had two pontoon bridges built across the width of the Hellespont at Abydos, in order that his huge army could cross from Persia into Greece. History also tells us they were vital to the defence of Constantinople during the Byzantine period of History (330AD – 1453AD). Their importance was also recognised by the Ottoman Empire (1354AD –1922AD) which was allied to Germany during the Great War, hence the attempt by the Allies to wrest control of the Dardanelles from Turkey in 1915.

Download or read book The Auckland Regiment written by 2/Lieut. O. E. Burton and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2012-04-11 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A good general history of a regiment raised in one of New Zealand's largest cities to take part in the Great War. The author - who won the Military Medal and the French Medaille D'Honneur for his military exploits, - has written a fluent and readable account. The three battalions of the Auckland Regiment trained in Egypt for the coming Gallipoli campaign in 1915. They assembled at Lemnos, took part in the landing and fighting at Cape Helles and Sari Bair, sustaining severe losses, and were then evacuated back to Egypt. They were first stationed at Armentieres, before seeing action on the Somme in 1916; wintering near Ploegsteert Wood, and then being deployed for the Battle of Messines in June 1917. They took part in the third battle of Ypres and wintered in the Salient, before returning to the Somme front in 1918, where they were stationed at Mailly and fought at Roissignol Wood and Bapaume. They took part in the Allied advance in the summer and autumn of 1918 and ended the war in the Le Quesnoy sector. After the armistice they were on garrison duty in Germany before returning home down under. The history has nine sketch maps and 12 portraits of personalities, but lacks battle photos. There are appendices on badges, chronology of events, honours and awards and a Roll of Honour.
