Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of England, Vol. 10 of 10: From the Accession of James I. To the Outbreak of the Civil War 1603 1642 I have to apologise for the large number of corrections of which a list is given in the present volume. Some of the misprints and errors I discovered myself; others have been pointed out to me by the kindness of some of my readers. In this matter I have to thank the Rev. T. S. Holmes, of Wookey; the Rev. J. R. Washbourn, of Gloucester, whose careful and accurate reading has produced by far the largest crop of errata. Trivial misprints, such as the omission of a letter, have not been noticed, as every reader can make such corrections for himself; but they have been notified to the printers, for alteration in case of a fresh issue of the work. I need hardly say that, apart from the feelings aroused in me by the reception accorded to this re-issue, it is with the greatest pleasure that I have brought my labours to an end. The work of compiling a new and enlarged index has been one of considerable drudgery, though I am sure that I have been right in refusing all offers of assistance. To the Outbreak of the Civil War, 1603-1642, Vol. 10 of 10: 1641-1642, With General Index to the Then Volumes Still greater, however, than the pleasure of bringing drud gery to an end, is that of being able to break new ground again. When, a year ago, the demand for this edition called me 05 from the work of writing the history of the Civil War, I had reached as far as the preparations for the siege of Read ing in April 1643, and I shall be glad to take up the interrupted thread. The time spent upon reviewing old work has, however, I trust, not been wholly lost. Especially in the early volumes something has been done to assimilate new information to the old, and to correct or tone down crude reflections. Imperfect as every attempt of this kind must be, from the impossibility of absolutely recasting the original work, what I have to ofler is, perhaps, not quite so imperfect as it was, though I have become aware of a certain want of artistic proportion in the book as a whole, and can perceive that some incidents have been treated of at greater length than they deserve. To the Outbreak of the Civil War, 1603-1642, Vol. 3 of 10: 1616-1621 I have TO ask my readers to make two corrections in my account of the Parliament of 1614. I spoke of Montague as having been rejected by the City of London, and of Pym as having been the member for Calne. Montague, however, sat for London, and though Eliot was a member of this Parlia ment, Pym was not. The mistake was pointed out to me by Mr. Duncombe pink, who has printed in He Palatine Note Book the only existing authoritative list of this Parliament, from the ms. In the Kimbolton Library. He was good enough to send me a copy, after my own text was in type, to which I referred in a note, though I regret that I did not then verify by it the statements which I had made upon inferior authority. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of England, Vol. 8 of 10: From the Accession of James I to the Outbreak of the Civil War, 1603-1642It soon became evident that the proceedings of the Com missioners were not regarded with approbation by the Irish population. Some fifty persons, indeed, who were already large landed proprietors, and who therefore had good reason to expect that their submission would be reckoned to their advantage when the division was made, gave their adhesion to the scheme. The remainder of the population, consisting of about men, women, and children, of whom about would be grown-up men, was almost without exception opposed to it.It would indeed have been strange if it had been otherwise. Not only were acres, or nearly half the divisible land.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of England From the Accession of James I, Vol. 4 of 10: To the Outbreak of the Civil War 1603-1642 If we wish to know what the views of Bacon and other officers of state really were, the first thing to be done is to cono sult the original patents. No doubt there is much which will not be learned there. We shall not find any light thrown on the personal motives of those through whose influence they were obtained. But if we find a large number of official declarations spread over a long series of years, and emanating from men who differed from one another in character, in posi tion, and in political Opinion, we shall be able to discover whether they contain indications of a settled policy, or are mere makeshifts put forward to cover the greed of unprincipled courtiers. Of the patents subsequently complained of there were two, the patent for inns and the patent for alehouses, which were specially objected to, partly as encroaching upon the jurisdiction of the justices of the peace, and partly as having been made the excuse for gross injustice and oppression. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of England, 1603-1607, Vol. 1 of 10: From the Accession of James I to the Outbreak of the Civil War, 1603-1642 IN issuing in a connected form the works which have been the labour of twenty years, my attention has necessarily been called to their defects. Much material has accumulated since the early volumes were published, and my own point of view is not quite the same as it was when I started with the first years of James I. I have therefore thoroughly revised and, in part, rewritten the first portion of the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. To the Outbreak of the Civil War, 1603 1642; 1623 1625 In the part of this volume relating to the Prince's journey Madrid I have had nothing but verbal alterations to make. Later on I have had at my disposal the despatches of Inojosa, Coloma, and Lafuente, in Mr. Cosens' transcripts, and, with their help, have been able at last to give an account at first hand of the relations between the Spanish ambassadors and the King during the first half of 1624. Toward the end of the volume appears occasionally a reference to the Melbourne MSS. They form a collection preserved at Melbourne Hall, a great part of which was originally made by Sir John Coke, and is now in the possession of Earl Cowper, for whose kind permission to examine the papers I wish to express my gratitude. I have also to thank Mr. W. D Fane, the present tenant of Melbourne Hall, for the facilities which he accorded me for conducting my researches, and for placing in my hands the abstracts which he has drawn up of the greater part of the papers.
