Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of British Butterflies An instinctive general love of nature, that is, in other words, of the works of God, has been implanted by Him, the Great Architect of the universe - the Great Parent of all - in the mind of every man. There is no one, whether old or young, or of whatever circumstances or rank in life, who can look without any feeling or emotion on the handiworks of Creation which surround him - who can behold a rich sunset, a storm, the sea, a tree, a mountain, a river, a rainbow, a flower, without some degree of admiration, and some measure of thought. He may, indeed, for the time, or for a moment, he engrossed by some worldly care, or some other subject - dome remembrance of the past, or anticipatian of the future; but this cannot always be the case, and whenever the mind is relieved from that overpowering feeling, the spontaneous thoughts which originate in the love of nature will be sure to arise in his soul. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of British Butterflies An instinctive general love of nature, that is, in other words, of the works of God, has been implanted by Him, the Great Architect of the universe - the Great Parent of all - in the mind of every man. He may, indeed, for the time, or for a moment, be engrossed by some worldly care, or some other subject - some remembrance of the past, or anticipation of the future; but this cannot always be the case, and whenever the mind is relieved from that overpowering feeling, the spontaneous thoughts which originate in the love of nature will be sure to arise in his soul. Whether indeed in some there is more than a general feeling of this kind; whether all, if opportunities had been afforded to them, and had been afforded to them in good time, would have found that especial delight which others find in the more intimate study of this or that branch of Natural History; whether it may have been only the pressure of different and altogether necessary thoughts that has pre-occupied the mind, and taken away, or, rather, set aside, those which would otherwise have naturally found favour with it, I will not take upon me to determine; but this much I can and do say, because I can say it of and for myself, that with me, in this sense, the universal includes the particular - includes every particular that is included under it; for there is no group of the wide-spread family of nature that I do not love to study, and to become more and more intimately acquainted with the members of. They are all the creations of the same wonderful Being - "the hand that made them is Divine." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Illustrated Natural History of British Butterflies and Moths My work is completed. I am bound to commend it to the "benevolent reader" in the good old-fashioned, time-honoured style. Fettered by usage, equally old-fashioned, equally time-honoured, I am induced to place this commendation in front, although I entirely agree with the sentiment that has induced some writers truthfully to place their preface as written, at the end, when all the rest was complete. This act of authorship is generally regarded as facetious - a very mild Joke certainly, but a joke nevertheless. I cannot understand this: I cannot perceive why an author should be ashamed or afraid to make the public confession that his valedictory address was given forth after his long companionship with the reader had ceased. I cannot conceive why such an obvious truism should be thought droll. Be this as it may, one thing is certain: an author is held to be something less than courteous who does not commend his labours to the public in some way or other, even though he may have nothing to say by way of commendation: so I bow to custom and commence my task. Would that I could adopt the stereo-form of prefaces, and plead the pressing solicitations of a large circle of admiring friends as the lever that enforced publication; but I feel that such a plea would be untruthful. I have been submitted to no such pressure: I have been lifted out of my normal obscurity by no such lever. Friends such as these have held aloof in the coolest and most unconcerned manner. I am left without excuse. First, then, I would invite attention to the fact, again noticed farther on, that I had a very, very early predilection for Butterflies - I may say even from my nurses arms - and this taste having continued to old age, and having been indulged whenever opportunity offered, I have seen more of the little world of English Butterflies than most of my compatriots. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Natural History of the British Butterflies, Vol. 1: Their World-Wide Variation and Geographical Distribution; A Text-Book for Students and Collectors In presenting this volume to my brother lepidopterists, some little explanation is necessary. Although it is essentially vol. Viii of The Natural History of the British Lepidoptera, it has been appearing for a considerable time in parts as A Natural History of the British Butterflies. The real reason for publishing this volume out of its proper order was threefold The large amount of material on the group that had been slowly amassing during the last twenty years, and the increasmg difficulty of dealing with it (2) the fact that a really good scientific work on British butterflies was an undoubted desideratum among advanced workers; and (3) the long time which must necessarily elapse before the material to be dealt with in the two intermediate volumes. Vi and vii, can possibly be worked out and prepared for publication; volume v is being cleared up for publication contemporaneously with this. It is trusted that these reasons Will be considered sufficient to excuse my action. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Butterflies: Figures and Descriptions of Every Native Species; With an Account of Butterfly Development, Structure, Habits, Localities, Mode of Capture, and Preservation A Desire to extend the knowledge of, and by so doing to extend the love for, those sunny creatures called Butterflies, has prompted the author to undertake this little work, which, though making no pretence to a technically scientific character, will, it is hoped, be found sufficiently complete and accurate to supply all information needful to the young entomologist as to the names, appearance, habits, localities, &c. of all our British Butterflies, together with a general history of butterfly life - the mode of capture, preservation, and arrangement in cabinets - the apparatus required, &c. At the same time it is so inexpensive as to be accessible to every schoolboy. The subject is one which has formed the delight and study of the author from early boyhood, and butterfly-hunting still preserves its fascinations, redoubling the pleasure of the country ramble in summer. The members of the highest order but two have received the scientific name of or scale-winged insects, and are characterised by having four large wings covered with small coloured scales overlapping like the tiles on the roof of a house. Further, the pupae? Are inactive, that is, do not move about or feed, or indeed shew signs of what is called active life, except sometimes an impatient wriggling of the anal extremity under irritation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Butterflies and Moths (British) The favourable reception with which the Out-door World has been greeted has encouraged the publishers to issue a series of volumes dealing in fuller detail with the various branches of Natural History treated of in that work. Necessarily each subject was only briefly touched upon, but the study is of so enticing a character that appetite grows by feeding, ' and the students of the 'out-door World, ' having tasted the sweetness of companionship with Nature, will not rest satisfied with the help afforded by that handbook. Each one will want to go deeper into that particular depart ment which most appeals to his own inclinations. The present volume is written expressly for those who desire to extend their knowledge of the British Lepidoptera, or to use the more popular names, Butterflies and Moths.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Butterflies, Moths and Beetles Insects have six legs in the perfect state, and no more; four (or two) wings, two eyes, composed of a great number of facets, and sometimes one, two, or three eyes of another kind, called simple eyes, or stemmata, on the tip of the head. Their body is composed of thirteen segments, divided into head, thorax, and abdomen. They have neither heart, brain, nor nervous system at all resembling those of the higher animals. The place of the heart is supplied by an organ called the great dorsal vessel, lying along the back and the brain and nervous system of vertebrate animals are represented by a double row of connected ganglia, or knots of nervous matter, lying along the lower surface of the body. They breathe by means of spiracles, or air-holes, opening on each side of the greater number of the segments of the body. The muscular system is highly developed, the muscles being far more numerous than those of vertebrate animals. Insects pass through four stages, called respectively egg, larva (or caterpillar), pupa (or Chrysalis), and imago, though these are more sharply defined in some insects than in others. They also moult their skins more or less frequently in the larva state; and although they sometimes possess more than six legs in this state (and occasionally none at all), yet the larvae of insects are not generally liable to be mistaken for any other animals.
