Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bechamp or Pasteur?: A Lost Chapter in the History of Biology The progress of natural science, like all other depart ments of knowledge, is associated with the personalities of its workers, and it often happens that the study of a man's life is the surest guide not only to the history of the science, but also to the discovery of neglected records made in days gone by. It is always a matter of absorbing interest to know how and by whom the foundations of natural truth, upon which we build our own more modern structures, were laid. We have long been accustomed to build on stones placed in position by the world-famed Pasteur, but it is not commonly recognized that many of these stones rest upon the deeper foundations laid by Pasteur's con temporary, Antoine Bechamp. It is fitting that one should hesitate to disturb stones set by those already gone from us, but when a substructure has once been revealed, there can be no question as to the liberty of extending the in vestigation. Probably no reader of this book will at first be prepared to accept much that is said in criticism of Pasteur and in worship of Bechamp, but as the perusal proceeds, his eyes will be opened to many references for which the author is in no way responsible except for their collation. It is greatly to be desired that the fundamental work of Bechamp should be far more widely recognized, and a debt is due to the author for throwing the limelight on his work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pasteur: The History of a Mind This book is more than a critique of Pasteur. It'is a contribution to the biological history of a swiftly changing time, a very striking period in the development of science. AS such it should be of interest to all biologists, and especially to all teachers and students of biology and of medicine. For them it was written, and translated. In this time of world upheaval and readjustment, when our young men are looking more and more to France for moral and intellectual ideals, it seems peculiarly apropos that the scientific life of one of her greatest sons, to whom the whole world owes an enormous debt of gratitude, Should be set before them clearly and interestingly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biology in America To the man in the street the biologist, with his bugs or his germs, frequently appears as a harmless but equally useless individual. Thus in an issue of the New Republic, shortly after America's entrance into the world war, a serio comic writer in criticizing the action of President Wilson in appointing a committee on national preparedness from the National Academy of Sciences says, I doubt if any other nation ever responded to the prospect of war with a scheme of national defense which included a Committee on Zoology and Animal Morphology. What excuse then has the biologist for his existence? What can he say for the truth that is in him? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wonder of Life HE aim of this book is to illustrate the ever-growing wonder of animated Nature - with especial reference to animal life. It is an unconventional introduction to Natural History and Biology, taking broad views of the actual lives of living creatures and working inwards. It is therefore complementary to other books which begin with the minute analysis of the individual. The author hopes that it may be found useful in nature-study as a continuation of his Biology of the Seasons, and that teachers of Zoology may recommend it to their students as an introduction to the study of some of the problems for the discussion of which our crowded curricula leave little time. Book excerpt: The present work is based chiefly upon the Introduction to the authors Manual of Zoology, much of which is given here in an unaltered form. A considerable portion, however, of the Introduction has been here recast, whilst fully two-thirds of the work consists of new matter. Illustrations also have been introduced wherever such appeared to be necessary. Many important subjects have, of course, been necessarily treated very superficially, or altogether omitted, as unsuitable for a merely elementary work. It is hoped, however, that most of those subjects are touched upon, a knowledge of which would be useful to the student of living or extinct forms of life, or to the general reader. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Life: Its Origin, History and Future The University of Chicago in December, 1955, began planning its celebration of the centenary in the most appropriate manner - bringing to bear on the subject of evolution current knowledge from a variety of relevant fields, thus advancing once more our understanding of the world and man. About fifty scientists were selected during 1956, and their themes were agreed upon; during 1957 and 1958 they developed the papers that are published here. As these were completed, they were exchanged among the authors. Armed with new information and insights, all but five of the authors met at the University on November 22, 1959, to prepare for panel discussions of the issues in evolution; these were held for the public during a five-day Celebration, beginning on the Centennial of the publication date of Origin of Species. The discus sions were based on the papers that had been prepared and distributed in advance, but were not delivered at the Celebration. The present volume, The Evolution of Life, and its companion volume, The Evolution of Man, represent most of the collected Uni versity of Chicago Centennial papers. A small group on the relation ship between science and spiritual values appears in a third volume, Issues in Evolution, which also contains the panel discussions and an index to all three volumes. Collectively, this work 15 called Evolution after Darwin. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
