Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flag Day: Its History, Origin, and Celebration as Related in Song and Story National standards are as old as nations. In the day when a nation found itself, it raised an emblem of one kind or another as a symbol of unity and solidarity. These standards were carried into action and were displayed on occasions of state ceremonial. They bore significant designs or inscriptions of a civil, military or religious character. Out of these standards developed in time the flags of nations. While this development extended through centuries, it is only within comparatively recent years that flags have come to be adopted and recognized as national emblems. Although America is one of the youngest nations, the Stars and Stripes is claimed by some to be the oldest National Flag in existence. Denmark disputes this claim, and dates its flag to the lgth cen tury. Japan's flag, it is said, can be identified as far back as the lath century. Without discussing that question, we may accept with confidence the statement that the American National Flag is certainly older than those of England and France, for the Stars and Stripes was adopted by Congress in 1777, while the tri-color became the Imperial Standard of France some time during the first and second empires, and England's Royal Standard was not adopted until 1801. Before the War of the Revolution, the flags of the Colonies forming the United States were various, and in the early stages of the Revolution each state adopted a flag of its own. The Massachusetts flag bore a Pine Tree; South Carolina displayed a rattlesnake. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The Confederate Battle Flag by : John M. COSKI
Download or read book The Confederate Battle Flag written by John M. COSKI and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the Confederate flag has become as much a news item as a Civil War relic. Intense public debates have erupted over Confederate flags flying atop state capitols, being incorporated into state flags, waving from dormitory windows, or adorning the T-shirts and jeans of public school children. To some, this piece of cloth is a symbol of white supremacy and enduring racial injustice; to others, it represents a rich Southern heritage and an essential link to a glorious past. Polarizing Americans, these flag wars reveal the profound--and still unhealed--schisms that have plagued the country since the Civil War. The Confederate Battle Flag is the first comprehensive history of this contested symbol. Transcending conventional partisanship, John Coski reveals the flag's origins as one of many banners unfurled on the battlefields of the Civil War. He shows how it emerged as the preeminent representation of the Confederacy and was transformed into a cultural icon from Reconstruction on, becoming an aggressively racist symbol only after World War II and during the Civil Rights movement. We gain unique insight into the fine line between the flag's use as a historical emblem and as an invocation of the Confederate nation and all it stood for. Pursuing the flag's conflicting meanings, Coski suggests how this provocative artifact, which has been viewed with pride, fear, anger, nostalgia, and disgust, might ultimately provide Americans with the common ground of a shared and complex history.

Download or read book Flag written by Marc Leepson and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flag: An American Biography is a vivid narrative that uncovers little-known facts and sheds new light on the more than 200-year history of the American flag. The thirteen-stripe, fifty-star flag is as familiar an American icon as any that has existed in the nation's history. Yet the history of the flag, especially its origins, is cloaked in myth and misinformation. Flag: An American Biography rectifies that situation by presenting a lively, comprehensive, illuminating look at the history of the American flag from its beginnings to today. Journalist and historian Marc Leepson uncovers scores of little-known, fascinating facts as he traces the evolution of the American flag from the colonial period to the twenty-first century. Flag sifts through the historical evidence to--among many other things--uncover the truth behind the Betsy Ross myth and to discover the true designer of the Stars and Stripes. It details the many colorful and influential Americans who shaped the history of the flag. "Flag," as the novelist Nelson DeMille says in his preface, "is not a book with an agenda or a subjective point of view. It is an objective history of the American flag, well researched, well presented, easy to read and understand, and very informative and entertaining." "Our love for the flag may be incomprehensible to others, but at least we now have a comprehensive guide to its unfolding."--The Wall Street Journal
Book Synopsis Flag, Nation and Symbolism in Europe and America by : Thomas Hylland Eriksen
Download or read book Flag, Nation and Symbolism in Europe and America written by Thomas Hylland Eriksen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-10-18 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the symbolic and political importance of flags has often been mentioned by scholars of nationalism, there are few in-depth studies of the significance of flags for national identities. This multi-disciplinary collection offers case studies and comparisons of flag history, uses and controversies. This book brings together a dozen scholars, from varying national and disciplinary backgrounds, to offers a cluster of close readings of flags in their social contexts, mostly contemporary, but also historical. Case studies from Denmark, England, Northern Ireland, Norway, Sweden, and the United States explore ways in which flags are contested, stir up powerful emotions, can be commercialised in some contexts but not in others, serve as quasi-religious symbols, and as physical boundary markers; how the same flag can be solemn and formal in one setting, but stand for domestic bliss and informal cultural intimacy in another.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it a symbol of pride in one's heritage or an ugly reminder of slavery and the fruits of racism? The issue of whether the Confederate flag belongs in front of government buildings, or even on Southern pride paraphernalia, has been a hot button for more than a century, long after the Civil War was fought and won. This book takes a close look at the flag's origins, its controversial history, what meaning it has for Americans living today, and the ongoing debate on its use and display.
