Book Synopsis The Issues in East Indian Archaeology by : Dilip K. Chakrabarti
Download or read book The Issues in East Indian Archaeology written by Dilip K. Chakrabarti and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: Archaeology is a neglected field of study in eastern India. However, the area from Arunachal to Orissa and Bihar covers a very large chunk of the subcontinent and is also along its most distinctive cultural areas. From this point of view the establishment of a new archaeological research institute, Centre for Archaeological Studies and Training, in Calcutta by the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Bengal, is a welcome development. In September 1996 the author who possesses a grassroots familiarity with the issues facing archaeological research in this region delivered a number of lectures at the invitation of this institute. The purpose of these lectures was to assess the current status of archaeological knowledge about east India and highlight some of its research priorities. The picture has been portrayed as objectively as possible and may help in the planning of archaeological research in this part of India.
Book Synopsis Archaeology of Eastern India, Chhotanagpur Plateau and West Bengal by : Dilip K. Chakrabarti
Download or read book Archaeology of Eastern India, Chhotanagpur Plateau and West Bengal written by Dilip K. Chakrabarti and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrations: 45 Figures Description: For a number of reasons the archaeology of the Chhotanagpur plateau and its extension up to the edge of the Bhagirathi plain in West Bengal deserves more than a passing mention in Indian archaeology. First, its sheer geographical extent requires emphasis: more than a hundred thousand square kilometres spread diagonally between the hills overlooking the Ganges near Rajmahal to the hills in southwestern Singhbhum on the one hand and between the northwesternmost part of Palamau to the Sonamukhi and Garh Jaipur forests in the eastern section of Bankura on the other. Secondly, the entire region is full of archaeological sites from the lower palaeolithic stage onwards, and some of the major issues of cultural development in eastern India are centred around them. Thirdly, the plateau which is rich in metals, stones and timber is the most important resource-bearing area in east India, and the way in which it was integrated into an exchange network with the plains may be a major archaeological and historic theme of study. Fourthly, the region as a whole is a home of a large number of tribal communities on various levels of subsistence and with different linguistic affiliations. Early this century a government officer wrote that it was as near as one could get to 'primitive India' but does this 'primitiveness' mean that this was an 'area of isolation' cut off from the main flow of Indian history? Which areas of study admit of the possibilities of ethnographic continuum between the prehistoric past and in the preindustrial present in this region? Based on field-surveys undertaken between 1981 and 1987, this work studies the archaeology of this region as a whole. Archaeological research in this region goes back to the 1860s but it is perhaps for the first time that the region as a whole has been studied and various dimensions of its archaeology focussed. This is also one of the major attempts to view archaeology as long-term settlement history in the context of India.

Book Synopsis Religion in Early Assam by : Rena Laisram
Download or read book Religion in Early Assam written by Rena Laisram and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-04-18 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a fresh approach to the existing literature on religion in Early Assam, bringing together perspectives from the fields of archaeology, religion, history and heritage. For decades, the Naraka legend has been incorporated into history without due critical attention and analysis of the historical context, while archaeological studies in religion have been largely descriptive. The sacred landscape of the erstwhile Prāgjyotiṣa and Kāmarūpa kingdoms had linkages with the history of other parts of India, and beyond. This book offers a comprehensive reconstruction of religion in Early Assam based on an exhaustive use of archaeological sources. It opens with a useful overview of the conceptual and methodological foundations of religion, archaeology and history. Heritage conservation of sacred sites such as Kāmākhyā which face the impact of rapid urbanization illustrates implications for Assam’s history and identity.

Book Synopsis The Early History Of Eastern India by : Promode Lal Paul
Download or read book The Early History Of Eastern India written by Promode Lal Paul and published by . This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early history of Eastern India is less known than the history of other parts of northern India, primarily due to paucity of material. Whatever material is available was not critically studied by a good number of competent scholars. As a matter of fact, ancient Bengal and adjacent regions never received the attention it deserved from scholars from outside Bengal, though Bengal of early days comprised modern West Bengal, Bangladesh, parts of Bihar and eastern Assam. As a result, there are only few books, except the monumental works of Dr. R.C. Majumdar and Nihar Ranjan Roy, on the subject. The Early History of Eastern India by Promode Lal Paul is a noteworthy attempt by a brilliant scholar to bring together the facts regarding the political and cultural history of the region during the Hindu period. It undoubtedly marks a distinctive advance over the existing books on history. The author has studied the subject critically and presented the facts in a detached manner without any bias or prejudice. Paul has facilitated the task of the future historians by a painstaking study of the relevant materials and the results achieved by him are certainly credible and encouraging. The work covers a vast period ending in the twelfth century A.D. The pre-Gupta era of Bengal, quite obscure as it is has been dealt with the help of archaeological and literary findings. The work is divided in twelve chapters. The Pala and Sena Dynasties and their rules have been studied in great details. Chapters on the social and economic conditions and specially on literature, learned men and centres of learning are quite illuminating.
Book Synopsis The Archaeology of Ancient Indian Cities by : Dilip K. Chakrabarti
Download or read book The Archaeology of Ancient Indian Cities written by Dilip K. Chakrabarti and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1995 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a definitive archaeological perspective on the history of early urban growth in India. It does this by looking at both the protohistoric and the early historic periods, coming down to about AD 300 and later. Geographically, it covers all the major areas of the subcontinent. The existing archaeological data have been synthesized to yield a comprehensive picture of the morphology of ancient sites and their place within what is currently known of their settlement perspectives. This book addresses itself to some of the cardinal issues of South Asian archaeology - the origin and decline of the Indus civilization; the issue of its merger in the main flow of India's later cultural development; the archaeological basis of its long chronology; aspects of Indus urbanism; the reasons for the growth of neolithic-chalcolithic inner India; and the patterns and problems of urban growth in the early historic period on the subcontinental scale. In each case the author's concern is with understanding the situation at the grassroots level within an essentially South Asian framework. The hypotheses offered in this book should lead to some major rethinking about the story of archaeological development in the subcontinent.

Book Synopsis Archaeology of Religion in South Asia by : Birendra Nath Prasad
Download or read book Archaeology of Religion in South Asia written by Birendra Nath Prasad and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-17 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the religious landscape of early medieval (c. AD 600-1200) Bihar and Bengal, poly-religiosity was generally the norm than an exception, which entailed the evolution of complex patterns of inter-religious equations. Buddhism, Brahmanism and Jainism not only coexisted but also competed for social patronage, forcing them to enter into complex interactions with social institutions and processes. Through an analysis of the published archaeological data, this work explores some aspects of the social history of Buddhist, Brahmanical and Jaina temples and shrines, and Buddhist stūpas and monasteries in early medieval Bihar and Bengal. This archaeological history of religions questions many ‘established’ textual reconstructions, and enriches our understanding of the complex issue of the decline of Buddhism in this area. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book encourages us to critically regard the ways in which ideologies of cultural heritage and civilisational legacies are transformed into tangible and visible things through archaeological scholarship. Through little-known histories of the practices, governance and scholarship of the archaeology of India, this book re-examines the manner in which the past is recalled and historicized. It guides us to think afresh of the histories of antiquarianism in South Asia, explore the impetus of collecting and curatorial practices within the scholarship of pre-colonial India, and investigate the diverse linkages within the histories of Indian archaeology. It encourages a focus upon issues of historiography, methodology and notions of evidence and looks in to the responsibilities and changing needs of the academic scholarship of archaeology.
