Book excerpt: The 15th Alabama Volunteer Infantry Regiment was organized at Fort Mitchell, Alabama, in August, 1861, with eleven companies. With over 900 men, the regiment was moved into East Tennessee and then Virginia. It joined the main army near Manassas and was brigaded with the 21st Georgia, 21st North Carolina, and 16th Mississippi Regiments under Maj. General G. B. Crittenden of Kentucky (Brig. General Isaac R. Trimble succeeded Crittenden in December). The 15th Alabama was placed in the Alabama Brigade under General Evander McIver Law (with the 4th, 44th, 47th and 48th Alabama regiments) on 19 January 1863. It fought throughout the war in Virginia except when it was transferred to the West with Braxton Bragg's army, fought at Chickamauga (19-20 September), where it lost 19 killed and 123 wounded, out of 425 engaged. In the fierce fights at Brown's Ferry (27 October) and Lookout Valley, the regiment lost 15 killed and 40 wounded. At Knoxville (17 November-4 December), 6 were killed and 21 wounded. The 15th surrendered 170 men at Appomattox. Of 1633 on the rolls, over 260 fell in battle, 440 died in the service, and 231 were transferred or discharged. It then proceeded to Tullahoma, and was there placed in the brigade of Gen. Clayton of Barbour, with the Eighteenth, Thirty-sixth, and Fifty-eighth of Alabama regiments. The regiment was first under fire with slight loss at Hoover's Gap, and lost nearly half the regiment killed and wounded at Chickamauga. At Missionary Ridge the Thirty-eighth was again hotly engaged at close quarters, and a large number were captured. It wintered at Dalton, and bore its share in the operations of the Dalton-Atlanta campaign, losing severely, particularly at Resaca and Atlanta. From Marietta to the close, Gen. Holtzclaw of Montgomery commanded the brigade. It fought around the latter city, and at Jonesboro. During the Tennessee campaign of Gen. Hood, the regiment felt the blight of the December frost at Nashville, and was in the rear of the retreat. Placed in the defenses at Mobile, the regiment went through the fiery ordeal at Spanish Fort, where it again suffered severely. With the army, it was surrendered at Meridian, Mississippi, about 80 strong.

Book excerpt: The 31st Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Talladega, 16 March 1862, with men from Calhoun, Cherokee, Montgomery, Randolph, Shelby, and Talladega counties. It reported to General Danville Leadbetter at Chattanooga shortly after. It then moved up to Knoxville, where it was brigaded under General Seth Barton, in Carter Stevenson's Division. After the Kentucky Campaign, the 31st was permanently brigaded with the 20th, 23rd, 30th, and 46th Alabama regiments, under General Edward D. Tracy of Madison, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. In December, the 31st accompanied Stevenson's Division to Vicksburg. There were 260 effectives in January, 1863, with 21 killed and 37 wounded at Vicksburg. Following parole at Vicksburg, the 31st continued throughout the remainder of the war with the Army of Tennessee. There were 23 casualties at Chattanooga, and in December, 1863, there were 452 present with 323 arms. Only 180 were fit for duty in January 1865, and less than 100 surrendered in April. Toward the close of the war, the 31st was consolidated with the 23rd and 46th Infantry and redesignated the 23rd Consolidated Infantry Regiment at Smithfield, 9 April 1865. Book excerpt: The 37th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Auburn, in the spring of 1862, under the requisition of President Jefferson Davis for 12,000 more Alabamians Ordered to Columbus, MS, after a short time, the regiment proceeded to Tupelo. There it was placed in General Henry Little's Division, and in the Brigade of Col. Martin of TN, with three Mississippi regiments. General Dabney Herndon Maury succeeded General Little when the latter was killed at Iuka, where the 37th was first engaged, with some loss. After Corinth the 37th was placed into a brigade with the 2nd TX, and 42nd AL, General John C. Moore commanding. The 37th lost heavily at Lookout Mountain and quite a number at Mission Ridge. The winter passed at Dalton, GA, where General Alpheus Baker of Barbour took charge of the brigade. The regiment was then engaged at Chattanooga (73 casualties out of 407 men present), Resaca, Noonday Creek, Kennesaw, and the battles around Atlanta. In one charge at Atlanta, 22 July, the regimental commander and 40 men were killed outright, out of 300 men present. During the fall and winter, the 37th was on garrison duty at Spanish Fort, then moved into North Carolina. The 37th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Consolidated, was organized on 9 April 1865 by combining the original 37th Alabama with the 42nd and 54th Alabama regiments, at Smithfield, NC. It broke the enemy line at Bentonville, and furled its colors a few days later, with 300 of its number present out of the 1100 who took the field originally. . There is some confusion regarding the origin of the regiment. Some accounts show the 29th was created by the addition of two companies to the Fourth Alabama Battalion - a body of eight companies, which had been organized the autumn before at Montgomery. The 29th remained at Pensacola until it was evacuated, suffering much from diseases that usually afflict raw troops. It then lay between Pollard and Pensacola for over a year, when it was ordered to Mobile. The regiment was there from July 1863 to April 1864, except for a short time that it was at Pollard. The regiment joined the Army of Tennessee at Resaca with over 1,000 men, in time to initiate the Atlanta-Dalton campaign. It was brigaded with the 1st, 17th, and 26th Alabama, and 37th Mississippi regiments, commanded at different intervals by Col. Murphey of Montgomery, General O'Neal of Lauderdale, and General Shelley of Talladega. Men were recruited from Fayette, Marion, Tuscaloosa, Walker, and Winston counties. Two companies under Major J. S. Garvin were soon ordered to Ft. Donelson and captured in that fight on 16 February 1862. After being exchanged, they joined the regiment in Virginia. It was in General Gabriel James Rains' Brigade at Yorktown, under fire but with few casualties. After moving up to Richmond from Williamsburg, the regiment was assigned to Rodes', O'Neal's, and Battle's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. Because of heavy losses in Virginia, the regiment was sent home after Gettysburg, then assigned as prison guards at Andersonville. In June of 1864, the 26th was attached to Brig. General James Cantey's Brigade and fought with the Army of Tennessee from Atlanta to Bentonville. It moved with General John Bell Hood into Tennessee where it was badly hurt at Nashville. Book excerpt: The 25th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Mobile in December 1861 by the consolidation of McClellan's 1st and 6th Alabama Infantry. It remained in that vicinity 2-3 months, then went to Tennessee. Brigaded under General Adley Gladden, the regiment (numbering 305 effectives, because of illness) fought at Shiloh (casualties: 15 k, 75 w), then was placed under General Gardner, with the 19th, 22nd, 39th, and 26-50th Infantry Regiments. It fought throughout the war with the Army of Tennessee. In the Carolinas, the 25th was in Sherman's front, with some casualties at Columbia and Kinston, and with large loss at Bentonville. Consolidated with the 19th, 22nd, 39th, and 26-50th, the regiment was shortly after surrendered at Goldsboro, having about 75 men of the old 25th present for duty. Ewell of Virginia, who was soon after succeeded by Gen. Rodes of Tuskaloosa. The regiment lay near Manassas during the fall and winter, and moved to Yorktown in the spring of 1862. The 12th continued throughout the war in Virginia. Of the original number of 1196, about 50 were at Appomattox; and of the 321 recruits received, about 70 were there. Nearly 250 died of wounds received in battle, about 200 died of disease, and 202 were discharged. The battle-flag of the regiment is now in Mobile. The unit was ordered to Knoxville, TN, then Kentucky where it fought at Fishing Creek (lost 64 men) under General Felix Zollicoffer. Later it was assigned to General Sterling Wood's regiment (with the 33rd AL, 44th TN, and 32nd and 33rd MS regiments). It lost 162 men at the battle of Shiloh. From Dalton to Atlanta the Sixteenth bore an honorable share in the retrograde movement of the Western Army, fighting by day and entrenching by night, and its casualties were 200 in number. At Jonesboro, the Sixteenth lost about 150 of its men, and was an actor in the other scenes of the fearful drama around Atlanta. At Chickamauga the 16th was in Cleburne's division. Its loss was 244 killed and wounded of the 414 engaged. From the disaster at Missionary Ridge the Sixteenth retired and wintered at Dalton. It moved with Hood into Tennessee and fought at Franklin and Nashville losing half its remaining force, and every commissioned officer. A remnant followed the march of the army into the Carolinas, and surrendered at Goldsboro, about 50 men being present. It had been consolidated with the 1st and 45th Alabama regiments. Thomas' brigade, and lost several killed and wounded during the first six days' operations at Spanish Fort. Companies of the Alabama 63rd Infantry Regiment Nearly all of the men except two companies ("A'' and "B") were conscripts from various parts of the State. Company A - Tallapoosa County Company C - 14 members were 17 year olds from Tallapoosa County.

Book excerpt: The 19th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Huntsville, 14 August 1861, It was ordered to Mobile immediately and remained there about three months, then was at Pensacola for two weeks. Ordered to Corinth, the 19th was brigaded under General Gladden of Louisiana, with the 22nd, 25th, and 50th regiments, and after Shiloh, the 17th Battalion, Sharpshooters, and the 39th regiment. There were few casualties at Missionary Ridge, and the 19th wintered at Dalton. In the almost incessant fighting from there to Atlanta, the regiment lost heavily in casualties, particularly at new Hope and near Marietta. The brigade, under the command of General Johnston of Perry, the 19th was badly cut up in the battles at Atlanta on 22 and 28 July. Losses were slight at Jonesboro. At the Battle of Franklin, the 19th lost only a few to battle wounds, but many were captured. It went to North Carolina and was engaged at Kinston and Bentonville, losing heavily in the latter affair. Then consolidated with the 40th and 46th Alabama regiments at Salisbury (with M. L.
