Book excerpt: Based primary upon records available to the author in his capacity as Adjutant of the Royal Malta Regiment of Militia, and from contemporary local records. The narrative covers the period 1798 to 1895 and describes actions in which Maltese units were engaged: removing the French from the island (1800), the expedition to Egypt (1801), and the seizure if Elba (1801), the landings in Sicily, and the second seizure of Elba (1808). Volunteers from the Royal Malta Fencible Artillery took part in the Egypt campaign of 1882. Biographical notes regarding various officers and NCOs are scattered throughout the text making this book a useful source for military historian and genealogists alike. The coloured plates are superb.

Very few documents survive prior to 1815. The book contains illustrations mostly from the personal collection of the author. It also features chromographs of army uniforms by Edward Caruana Dingli. The book gives an insight into the drive of the Maltese in building their own corps for general service at a time when discipline, education and loyalty were very much in need of safeguarding.

Book excerpt: A fine unit history, from it's foundation in 1796 to the end of The First World War, complete with very good colour uniform plates, rolls of officers present in Peninsula, Waterloo & numerous other campaigns. During the First World War, the AVC tripled its officers, and the number of other ranks grew forty-fold. By 1918, nearly half of all veterinary surgeons in Britain were serving in the corps. Engaged on the Western Front, at Gallipoli, Salonika, Mesopotamia and Palestine, it treated sick and wounded cavalry, transport and artillery animals. It also diversified, dealing with horses that had been gassed, setting up four farriery schools, and even treating camels in the Middle East. Following the Armistice in 1918, it was granted the 'Royal' prefix in recognition of its service.

Author Desmond Gregory also explains why most, though not all, Maltese people welcomed the protection of Britain, the supreme naval power in the Mediterranean after the battle of Aboukir Bay.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British army between 1783 and 1815 – the army that fought in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars – has received severe criticism and sometimes exaggerated praise from contemporaries and historians alike, and a balanced and perceptive reassessment of it as an institution and a fighting force is overdue. That is why this carefully considered new study by Kevin Linch is of such value. He brings together fresh perspectives on the army in one of its most tumultuous – and famous – eras, exploring the global range of its deployment, the varieties of soldiering it had to undertake, its close ties to the political and social situation of the time, and its complex relationship with British society and culture. In the face of huge demands on its manpower and direct military threats to the British Isles and territories across the globe, the army had to adapt. As Kevin Linch demonstrates, some changes were significant while others were, in the end, minor or temporary. In the process he challenges the ‘Road to Waterloo’ narrative of the army’s steady progress from the nadir of the 1780s and early 1790s, to its strong performances throughout the Peninsular War and its triumph at the Battle of Waterloo. His reassessment shows an army that was just good enough to cope with the demanding campaigns it undertook.
