Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Records of New Zealand, Vol. 1 The adoption of this course serves a double purpose. In the first place, it enhances the value of the History, for it enables the reader to turn at any point from the narrative of the writer to the fuller information which the reports and despatches supply. The advantage gained by this treatment of the official papers is obvious. N O matter how faithfully a writer of history may perform his task, he cannot cover all the ground no matter how acutely he may criticize the actors who take. Part in the scenes he describes, he cannot exhibit them in so clear a light as they are shown in their own writings. Thus the publication of the Records may be regarded as desirable from the historical point of view. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of New Zealand, Vol. 1 At one time it was hoped that several persons of great ability and high character, who had amassed much recorded information and had lived long in New Zealand, would combine the results and give them to the world. But that hope has vanished. I learned from one of them, who went to New Zealand in 1839, and lives there now, that on the occasion of a visit to Europe he abandoned the idea of publication, and destroyed his manuscripts. The failure of that project, and encouragement from those concerned in it, embolden me to present the following narrative compiled with a diligent endeavour to test every statement by reference to the most authentic sources of information. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Records of New Zealand, Vol. 1 The object sought to be attained by the publication of the "Historical Records" of New Zealand can best be understood by a perusal of the preface to the "Historical Records" of New South Wales, printed in this volume. The reason why the method is adopted of explaining one set of Records by quoting the preface to another is that this volume comprises almost exclusively those documents among the "Historical Records" of New South Wales which concern the Islands of New Zealand. Those belonging to the years prior to 1811 have been extracted from the printed, those after that date from the manuscript "Historical Records," lying in Sydney, which latter, by the kindness of the New South Wales Government, were put at the disposal of this country. The New South Wales sources are therefore our sources, their preface our preface. So clearly are the objects to be gained by the publication of the material and the sources from which it has been procured stated in the preface to the "Historical Records" of New South Wales, that the Editor sees no necessity to deal at any length with the task of justifying or explaining the publication of this volume. The documents, it may however be mentioned, are arranged in chronological order, and it is intended to continue the issue of fresh volumes from time to time as the material obtained justifies that course. Already a very large amount of additional material, sufficient to warrant the belief that another two years should see a second volume emerge from the printer's hands, is ready for the compositor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Zealand and Its Colonization, Vol. 1 Missionary but the pioneer of the destruction of its heathen people? Is a problem still waiting its solution in New Zealand. On what principle, with reference to native rights, have these Islands been erected into a British Colony? And what are the obligations contracted by the Crown of England in subjecting them to British rule? To what extent have the native race adopted the habits and usages of civilized life? And what pro gress has been made by them in industrial pur suits? What is the prospect of their permanent preservation? And what means have been taken for saving them from that process of exter mination under which uncivilized tribes have too commonly disappeared when brought into contact with civilized men? To these, and questions such as these, the following pages will be found to contain a faithful answer. Contemporary events, however, are seldom rightly discerned or fully appreciated, even' by their principal actors; but when the subject shall have become a matter of History, the Colonization of these Islands and the commingling of the Races will be read with all the interest of romance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Zealand Wars, Vol. 1: A History of the Maori Campaigns and the Pioneering Period; 1845-1864 HE increasing interest in the study of New Zealand's past emphasizes the need for a history of the wars with the Maoris since the establishment of British sovereignty and of the era of pioneering settlement and adventure, which was prao tically conterminous with those campaigns. Although there is in existence a considerable body of war-time literature written by participants in the conflicts, it is not possible to gather in any of the works on the subject a connected account of the successive outbreaks and campaigns which troubled the colony from 1845 to the beginning of 1872. Most of the printed narratives deal chiefly with events which came within the soldier-writers' own experi ence, and'other contributions to the story of the campaigns are scarcely written in the impartial spirit of the historian. Some of the earlier works, and even the blue-books, contain many state ments which careful inquiries and a better understanding of the Maori side of the struggle have now demolished. Most of the useful books, moreover, are out of print, and the student who Wishes to make a complete. Survey of the field of contact between pukeha and Maori is compelled to work through many volumes, pamphlets, and newspaper-hles in the public libraries. The fragmentary and scattered nature of our war-time literature therefore necessitates this endeavour to provide a standard history in convenient compass. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in New Zealand, Vol. 1 of 2: With Contributions to the Geography, Geology, Botany, and Natural History of That Country The following volumes contain an account of several journeys into various parts of New Zealand during the years 1839, 1840, and 1841, a part of which time was occupied in visiting the Chatham Islands and New South Wales. My researches as Naturalist to the New Zealand Company might have been far more complete, had it been in my power to make an entire survey of New Zealand, but circumstances rendered this impossible; and it appears evident, from the principle which has guided the Government and the public, that we shall be indebted rather to an extension of colonization, than to a previous examination, for a more intimate knowledge of the country. I have, therefore, no other pretensions in bringing these volumes before the public, than that they contain unvarnished descriptions of the places I visited. I must, however, observe that I have been over much untrodden ground. I was the first to visit or describe Mount Egmont, many places in the northern parts of the island, and some of the picturesque and interesting lakes and thermal springs in the interior. The excellent map which Mr. John Arrowsmith has compiled with the aid of my notes and sketches, will amply illustrate the routes I have taken.
