Giraldus Cambrensis was born in the Castle of Manorbier, in the county of Pembroke. In his childhood he displayed a love of literature, and for the ecclesiastical profession, which led his father to call him " The little bishop." He was educated under the care of his uncle, David Fitzgerald, Bishop of St. David's, with whom he remained until he was twenty years of age, and then he went to Paris, where he gained great distinction. In the year 1172 he returned to England, and gained an ecclesiastical preferment, but in a short time he gained many enemies, on account of his activity in correcting abuses which had crept into the Church.
