Download or read book Beyond Burnham written by Joseph P. Schwieterman and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Burnham provides a fascinating account of a century of visionary planning for metropolitan Chicago. From Daniel Burnham and Edward Bennett's famed 1909 Plan of Chicago to the push for superhighways and airports to battles over urban sprawl, the book showcases an illustrated portrait of the big personalities and the "big plans" they espoused. The human face of planning appears in the interplay between public officials and citizen advocates. Powerful institutions--the Chicago Plan Commission and Regional Transportation Authority, among others--emerge to promote metropolitan goals. Some efforts succeed while others fail, but the work of planners lives on in efforts to shape new visions for the region's future.

Book excerpt: For close to 150 years, photographers have documented the construction of Chicago's public transportation system. They photographed the building of the city's famous ?L? lines and subway tunnels. And they photographed the streetcars that glided through city streets. For the first time, these photos in the Chicago Transit Authority archive are available in Chicago: City on the Move. The book shows Chicago in a new light. It presents a history of the city through mass transportation. But this is not a book of nostalgia. Although the photos are decades old, the subject is very much alive. Take a trip on the Blue Geese, the Green Hornets and the Old Reds. This is your chance to see Chicago as it was and better understand Chicago as it is. This is a book for people who love transportation, who love photography and who love the city on the move.Two-hundred and fifty pictures in duotone.

Download or read book Chicago written by John F. McDonald and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-14 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chicago went from nothing in 1830 to become the second-largest city in the nation in 1900, while the Midwest developed to become one of the world’s foremost urban areas. This book is an economic history of the Chicago metropolitan area from the 1820s to the present. It examines the city in its Midwestern region and compares it to the other major cities of the North. This book uses theories of the economics of location and other economic models to explain much of Chicago’s history. Chicago maintained its status as the second-largest city through the first decades of the 20th century, but rapid growth shifted to the Sunbelt following World War II. Since the 1950s the city’s history can be divided into four distinct periods; growth with suburbanization (1950-1970), absence of growth, continued suburbanization, and central city crisis (1970-1990), rebound in the 1990s, and financial crisis and deep recession after 2000. Through it all Chicago has maintained its position as the economic capital of the Midwest. The book is a synthesis of available literature and public data, and stands as an example of using economics to understand much of the history of Chicago. This book is intended for the college classroom, urban scholars, and for those interested in the history of one of world’s foremost urban areas.

Download or read book Chicago Cable Cars written by Greg Borzo and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When most people hear "cable car" they think "San Francisco." Yet for almost one-quarter of a century Chicago boasted the largest cable car system the world has ever seen, transporting more than one billion riders. This gigantic public work filled residents with pride--and filled robber barons' pockets with money. It also sparked a cable car building boom that spread to twenty-six other U.S. cities. But after twenty-five years, the boom went bust, and Chicago abandoned its cable car system. Today, the fascinating story of the rise and fall of Chicago's cable cars is all but forgotten. Having already written the history of the "L," Greg Borzo guides readers through a stretch of Chicago's transit history that most people never knew existed--even though they have been walking past, riding over and even dining in remnants of it for years. . .
