Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Catalogue of the Members of the First Church of Christ in New Haven, Connecticut (Center Church): A. D. 1639-1914 Public worship was set up in New Haven in 1638, and the First Church of Christ was organized in 1639. The earliest extant record of admissions begins in 1685. Dis missions are first recorded in 1812, though for many years after that date with much irregularity. From the record of baptisms, the town records, and other sources, a partial list of members before 1685 has been made, though necessarily incomplete; in this list names are assigned, conjecturally, to the dates of the earliest known intimations of membership. The prefix c indicates that a person was received by certificate from another church; in cases of the admission of a husband and wife at the same date, details are given in full under the husband's name only. Download or read book American Congregations, Volume 1 written by James P. Wind and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The congregation is a distinctly American religious structure, and is often overlooked in traditional studies of religion. But one cannot understand American religion without understanding the congregation. Volume 1: Portraits of Twelve Religious Communities chronicles the founding, growth, and development of congregations that represent the diverse and complex reality of American local religious cultures. The contributors explore multiple issues, from the fate of American Protestantism to the rise of charismatic revivalism. Volume 2: New Perspectives in the Study of Congregations builds upon those historical studies, and addresses three crucial questions: Where is the congregation located on the broader map of American cultural and religious life? What are congregations' distinctive qualities, tasks, and roles in American culture? And, what patterns of leadership characterize congregations in America?

Book Synopsis Captive of the Labyrinth by : Mary Jo Ignoffo
Download or read book Captive of the Labyrinth written by Mary Jo Ignoffo and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captive of the Labyrinth is reissued here to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of rifle heiress Sarah L. Winchester in 1922. After inheriting a vast fortune upon the death of her husband in 1881, Winchester purchased a simple farmhouse in San José, California. She built additions to the house and continued construction for the next twenty years. When neighbors and the local press could not imagine her motivations, they invented fanciful ones of their own. She was accused of being a ghost-obsessed spiritualist, and to this day it is largely believed that the extensive construction she executed on her San José house was done to thwart death and appease the spirits of those killed by the Winchester rifle. Author and historian Mary Jo Ignoffo’s definitive biography unearths the truth about this reclusive eccentric, revealing that she was not a maddened spiritualist driven by remorse but an intelligent, articulate woman who sought to protect her private life amidst the chaos of her public existence and the social mores of the time. The author takes readers through Winchester’s several homes, explores her private life, and, by excerpting from personal correspondence, one learns the widow’s true priority was not dissipating her fortune on the mansion in San José but endowing a hospital to eradicate a dread disease. Sarah Winchester has been exploited for profit for over a century, but Captive of the Labyrinth finally puts to rest the myths about this American heiress, and, in the process, uncovers her true legacies.
