Book excerpt: I develop my argument by firstly exploring the tensions between the mobilities of indigenous peoples and the spatio-economic ambitions of Western incomers in the 13th and 19th centuries, particularly the impact of their creation of a new "cartographic reality of space" (Strandsbjerg, 2010) through mapping and bordering practices. I address how these tensions evolved as the new states of Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia, were born in the 1960s, and how the spatial effects of their efforts to produce new 'nation states' were felt in this maritime region. The final chapters of this thesis analyse how the mobilities of non-state actors continue to be in conflict with state bordering practices, particularly since an intrusion into Sabah by an armed group from the southern Philippines in 2013. Underpinning this thesis is a recognition of the seas as more than merely spaces to be crossed between land-based societies, but as sites of human attachment and belonging. In doing so I demonstrate how they are instrumental to human security in its physical, economic and ontological dimensions.

It deals with a set of ‘insecurities’ that is not readily understood or measurable. As such, it conceptually locates the threats and impediments to ‘human security’ within relationships of risk, uncertainty, safety and trust. At the same time, it presents a wide variety of investigations and approaches from both localized and regional perspectives. By focusing on the human and relational dimensions of insecurities in Southeast Asia it highlights the ways in which vulnerable and precarious circumstances (human insecurities) are part of daily life for large numbers of people in Southeast Asia and are mainly beyond their immediate control. Many of the situations people experience in Southeast Asia represent the real outcomes of a range of largely unacknowledged socio-cultural-economic transformations interlinked by local, national, regional and global forces, factors and interests. Woven from experience and observations of life at various sites in Southeast Asia, the contributions in this volume give an internal and critical perspective to a complex and manifold issue. They draw attention to a variety of the less-than-obvious threats to human security and show how perplexing those threats can be. All of which underscores the significance of multidisciplinary approaches in rethinking and responding to the complex array of conditioning factors and interests underlying human insecurities in Southeast Asia.

General characteristics of light infantry forces are identified, and an analysis of how light forces operate tactically and how they are supported is presented. In the process, the relationship of the light infantry ethic to its organization is evaluated, and the differences between light infantry and conventional infantry is illuminated. For the purpose of this study, the term conventional infantry refers to modern-day motorized and mechanized infantry and to the large dismounted infantry forces typical of the standard infantry divisions of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The study concludes that light infantry is unique and distinct. A light infantry ethic exits and manifests itself in a distinctive tactical style, in a special attitude toward the environment, in a freedom from dependence on fixed lines of communication, and in a strong propensity for self-reliance. The study is based on a historical analysis of 4 light infantry forces employed during and since World War II: The Chindits, in the 1944 Burma campaign against the Japanese; The Chinese communist Forces during the Korean War; British operations in Malaya and Borneo 1948-66; and the First Special Service Force in the mountains of Italy 1942-44. -- p.
