Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketches, Vol. 1 The undersigned gathered information used in the construction of some half dozen sketches of an historical nature to be published in the Virginia Enquirer. These productions attracted the favorable attention of numerous readers of that journal, which induced the writer to prepare additional sketches. Dr. J. F. Snyder kindly offered to furnish a series of sketches of the early physicians of the county to be added to the series which offer was gladly accepted and his contributions make the series worthy of publication in book form. Had the result of the venture been foreseen the series would have been prepared in different form. The sketch of the Doctor upon Early Illinois should have been the initial number of the series, and the arrangement would have differed in other respects. Newspaper offices are not arranged and conducted as regular book publishing concerns, and therefore numerous typographical errors are to be found which somewhat mar the effect of the volume. The more important errors are noted upon another page. The sketches herein prepared by Dr. J. F. Snyder are the following: Early Illinois, page 21; Dr. Pothicary, page 60; Dr H. H. Hall, page 94; William Holmes, page 139; Dr. Schooley, page 151; Dr. Tate, page 167; Dr. Elder, page 209; Dr. Lippencott, page 236; Dr. Chandler, page 275; Dr. McClure, page 296; Dr. Logan, page 354; Dr. Christy, page. 384 The sketch of Pioneer Life in Illinois, on page 179, was written by Mrs. Emily C. Burton, of Hebron, Nebraska. The sketch of Ambrose Buraker, page 4, was dictated by himself. The sketch of Col. J. W. Judy on page 14, was prepared by himself. The sketch of Judge Rearick, on page 40, was written by the Judge, except the last paragraph. The sketch of Captain Campbell, on page 67, was written by the Captain. The sketches of Thos. J. Collins, page 85 and of Charles Brady, page 88, were written by Mrs. Emily Collins Brady, of Pomona, California. The sketch of Zachariah Hash, on page 271, was prepared by his grandson. There are many historical facts to be found in this volume that have never before been published, and which are deemed to be worthy of preservation. The writer has in his possession other matter of the same nature which may appear in a second volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches in History and Poetry OF the ten papers, which have been named Sketches, contained in this volume, some were given to the public in periodicals by the author himself. Others are now printed for the first time. The date of the earliest is 1860; of the latest 1884, the year before the author's death. Four of them were given as Lectures in the chair of Poetry, Oxford, viz., VI., VII., IX., X. All the subjects, save one, are taken from Scottish History or Poetry, fields in which the writer' showed a lifelong and special interest. One or two of the papers may be singled out as but slight in treat ment of the subject; yet all of them contain pas sages which are highly characteristic of the author, and some are worthy of him at his best - as, for example, The Songs of Scotland before Burns. They thus seem to me to be well deserving of collection and publication in one volume. As these papers were written at different times, and as the subjects are mainly allied, there occurred. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton's Sketch-Book: Auto-Biographical Sketches of the Life, Labors, and Extensive Home Travels of Rev. A J. Cotton, in Short, Convenient Chapters Preface, indeed! Do you say - who cares for the preface? Introduce us at once to your little book. N ot quite so fast, my dear young readers. If you were about to erect a permanent edifice, would you not in the first place prepare a good substantial foundation for it? Well, then, what a foundation is to a building is the Pref ace to a book, don't you see it? No one of you would say to your Minister, don't delay and bother us with your text, let us have the sermon at once and be done with it; you would not say that, would you? True, the minister might say just as many pretty things without naming his text as with it. But it would profit you little; there would be neither point nor connection in it; it would be simply unmeaning, like one 'beating the air.' But when he gives out his text you have his theme, and with it a point of attraction, and know just how and where to apply everything as you pass along, don't you? The Preface is my text for my little 'sketch-book.' Here, then, we'll take an even start together, now that you have my start ing point and the theme of my pen. Paul's Gospel theme to the Gentiles was simply Christ and him crucified.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictures of Slavery in Church and State: Including Personal Reminiscences, Biographical Sketches, Anecdotes, Etc Etc I was born in New Town, Worcester County, Maryland, on the 26th day of September, 1811. My mothers name was Sally Laws Henderson. She was a devout member of the M. E. Church, and died in June, 1828. From her lips I received my first antislavery lesson. Could she have had her way, no slave would ever have been held by any member of her family. My father, John W.Long, was a native of Maryland, and a slaveholder. In the early part of his life he was a sea-captain, with all the generosity of the sailor, but with few of the faults common to him. During the war of 1812 he abandoned the sea, and commenced the mercantile business in New Town. In 1824 he removed to the Perry on the Somerset side of the Pocomoke River, nearly a mile from New Town. He died in 1834, leaving my two sisters and brother under my protection. I was received into the M. E. Church in 1835, by the Rev. John A. Roche, of the Philadelphia Conference, who is an accomplished Christian gentleman and eloquent preacher. I commenced my ministerial career in 1839, and was received into full connection in the Philadelphia Conference in 1842. In 1848 my health failed; and since that time the Conference has permitted me to labor when and where I have pleased, according to the state of my health. She was distinctly a domestic woman and she was, moreover, so acutely sensible of the world of nature, loving its owers, trees, and all animate and inani mate objects, that her active mind and intelligent sympathy could scarcely fail to seize upon this material when she came to write for the instruction or the diversion of that part Of humanity which lives nearest the earth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Lehigh Valley: Containing a Copious Selection of the Most Interesting Facts, Traditions, Biographical Sketches, Anecdotes, Etc;, Etc;, Relating to Its History and Antiquities We must acknowledge that the work is confined mainly to a statement of facts, which, from the space a work of this kind has necessarily limited us, has precluded, in a great degree, grace of style; but we hope the solid merit of authenticity will compensate the reader for some abruptness of diction. We would be ungrate ful to neglect to acknowledge our indebtedness to several friends and correspondents who have rendered important aid during the progress of the work. They have had a large share in rescuing from oblivion many interesting facts, and In making up what will be at least a curious contribution to the history of the State. To the authors, both ancient and contemporary, from whom extracts have been made, credit has generally been given in the body of the work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harper's Story Books: A Series of Narratives, Dialogues, Biographies, and Tales, for the Instruction and Entertainment of the Young You will learn from the story of Viola and Arno, if you read it aright, that when, in the course of life, calamities, whether seem ing or real, come upon us, we are not to allow ourselves to be dis couraged and cast down, and to yield to despondency and gloomy forebodings, but are to keep up a good heart, and, while we are vigilant and faithful in doing all that there is for us to do, not to refuse the enjoyment of the pleasures that still remain to us from regret and chagrin on account of those that are lost, or from anx iety and distress on account of those which we fear are in danger of being lost. We ought to be circumspect, prudent, and vigilant at all times in doing what we can to avert misfortune, but when we have once done our duty, or are conscious that we are doing it, we must, so far as is possible, dismiss all care and anxiety from our minds. We are always wrong when we reject the sources of happiness that still remain to us, from a useless repining after those which God in his providence has seen fit to take away. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Kershaw's Brigade: With Complete Roll of Companies, Biographical Sketches, Incidents, Anecdotes, Etc More than thirty-four years have passed away since the soldiers who composed the Second South Carolina Regiment of Infantry, the Third South Carolina Regiment of Infantry, the Eighth South Carolina Regiment of Infantry, the Fifteenth South Carolina Regiment of Infantry, the Twentieth South Carolina Regiment of Infantry, and the Third South Carolina Battalion of Infantry, which commands made up Kershaw's Brigade, laid down their arms; and yet, until a short time ago, no hand has been raised to perpetuate its history. This is singular, when it is remembered how largely the soldiers of this historic brigade contributed to win for the State of South Carolina the glory rightfully hers, by reason of the splendid heroism of her sons in the war between the States, from the year 1861 to that of 1865. If another generation had been allowed to pass, it is greatly feared that the power to supply the historian with the information requisite to this work would have passed away forever. The work which assumes to perpetuate the history of Kershaw's Brigade should not be a skeleton, consisting of an enumeration of the battles, skirmishes, and marches which were participated in - with the names of the commanding officers. What is needed is not a skeleton, but a body with all its members, so to speak. It should be stated who they were, the purposes which animated these men in becoming soldiers, how they lived in camp and on the march, how they fought, how they died and where, with incidents of bravery in battle, and of fun in camp. No laurels must be taken from the brow of brave comrades in other commands; but the rights of the soldiers of Kershaw's Brigade must be jealously upheld - everyone of these rights. To do this work, will require that the writer of this history shall have been identified with this command during its existence - he must have been a soldier. Again, he must be a man who acts up to his convictions; no toady nor any apologist is desired. If he was a Confederate soldier from principle, say so, and apologize to no one for the fact. If he loved his State and the Southland and wished their independence, say so, and "forget not the field where they perished." Lastly, he ought to have the ability to tell the story well. The friends of Captain D. Augustus Dickert, who commanded Company H of the Third South Carolina Regiment of Infantry, are confident that he possesses all the quality essential to this work. He was a splendid soldier - brave in battle, clear-headed always, and of that equilibrium of temperament that during camp life, amid the toil of the march, and in battle the necessity for discipline was recognized and enforced with justice and impartiality. He was and is a patriot. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories and Sketches Some years since circumstances caused me to spend the summer months in a farming district, a few miles from the village of E., and it was there I met with Terry Dolan. He had a short time previous come over from Ireland, and was engaged as a sort of chore boy by Mr. L., in whose family I resided during my stay in the neighborhood. This Terry was the oddest being with whom I ever chanced to meet. Would that I could describe him! - but most of us, I believe, occasionally meet with people, whom we find to be indescribable, and Terry was one of those. He called himself sixteen years of age; but, excepting that he was low of stature, you would about as soon have taken him for sixty as sixteen. His countenance looked anything but youthful, and there was altogether a sort of queer, ancient look about him which caused him to appear very remarkable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Sketch of Linton Stephens: Containing a Selection of His Letters, Speeches, State Papers, Etc The life of linton stephens was one of character rather than of incident - more the life of a thinker than an actor upon the stage of human affairs. He chose to be a spec tator of passing events, and was content to weigh their sig nificance and watch their succession through the loopholes of retreat, so as not to feel the pressure of the crowd. He had little relish for the hot arena of the world-strife. The mild dignity that environs the good citizen was more beautiful and more attractive in his eyes, and more grateful to his tastes and habitudes, than the applause of listening senates, or the Victor's wreath of laurel. The blaze of public notoriety he shunned. He shrunk from all manner of self-exposition or display. Vain-glory was not among the imperfections of his nature. He was perfectly satisfied with knowing the truth of anything, or any fact, kimself uncaring whether the outside world appreciated his knowl edge thereof or not; hence, he had no ambition to make history: he was content to study its lessons, interpret its facts, and learn wisdom from its teachings.
