The present volume should bring motorists ocking to Philadelphia. It should also stimulate new uses for the automobile at home. For the book does more than tell about Philadelphia, it shows how to visit and enjoy every nook and corner of the nation's greatest historic city. It does this chie y in the form of attractive motor routes, which embrace all the places and memorials of historic and scenic importance in' and about Philadelphia. It is a book therefore to be used in an automobile, not merely to be read in a library. It will be found most valuable as an exact historic auto-guide to the old homestead of the nation. Several special features will appeal to the auto-tourist. Not only are definite directions given by which the chief sights of the city and its surround ings may be reached, but the minimum time necessary to visit and inspect them. Is fully indicated. For convenience and quick reference the Descriptive Itineraries show in bold-faced type the exact mileage location of the site or relic described. The visitor limited in time to 'one or more days will find useful the Summary sight-seeing Tours, which cover the important points of interest. Frequent visitors to Philadelphia will find in this guide something new for every occasion. The long-distance tourist, reaching or leaving Phila delphia by one of the great highway routes, will find the scheduled Detours attractive and, in the long run, time-saving. The doctor, the lawyer, the banker, the business man, the teacher, the churchman, the industrial worker, and the social worker, as well as the general sight-seer, will find something that appeals to his special interest. Moreover, every user of the book will discover that it is a guide to a series of auto-outings every one of which teems with scenic and kaleidoscopic experiences not set down in the text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Philadelphia, 1609-1884, Vol. 1 of 3 The desire to leave nothing untold which could in any way throw light upon the history of men, events, and institutions in Philadelphia has made it impossible at times to escape repetition. Facts, which fall within the proper cognizance of the narrative of general events, will sometimes reappear in another shape in the records of institutions or in special chapters. But the fault will claim the reader's indulgence, because intelligent persons prefer a twice-told tale to one neglected or half tad. Several of the themes or chapters of the homogeneous whole have been treated by those who have some particular association or long acquaintance with the subject. In the diversity of writers there will of course be variety of opinions, but they make good the poet's description. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specimen Chapters of the History of Philadelphia Philadelphia, says the worthy Dr. James Mease, in his Picture of the city, published in lies on a plain nearly level, and on the western bank of the river Delaware, in 39 degrees 57 minutes of north latitude, and 75 degrees 8 minutes of longitude west of London. It is about one hundred and twenty miles distant from the ocean by the course of the river, and sixty in a direct line; its elevation above low-water mark ranges from two to forty-six feet, the highest part being between Seventh and Eighth Streets from Schuylkill. This topographical description is not, however, so accurate as that of Mr. Makin, the learned schoolmaster, quoted at the head of this chapter, and which his successor, Proud, the historian, has rendered into stanzas after the style of Alexander Pope. The ground under the waving trees and springing grass, where the birds sing and the children play, is literally full of dead men's bones, but the grass is no less green, the sunshine no less bright, on that account, and the dead sleep none the less peacefully, for the life above them.
