In glacial times it was the outlet to the Gulf of Mexico for the run-off from the great ice sheets covering Canada, the Great Lakes, and north central states. In this era it received many of its present day physical features. Before Lake Erie found its egress to Lake Ontario over the Niagara Falls, the waters of the Great Lakes ran down through the Illinois Valley to the Gulf. Old-timers still remember Schneringas six-pony hitch carrying joy-filled passengers down Main Street, the state-of-the-art livestock arena, and the trophy-winning cattle raised at Curtiss Farm.
