The following letter from Rawdon was found in Colonel Rugeley's house by General Gates when occupied by him the preceding August 13th: Headquarters, Camden, 1 July, 1780. Sir: So many deserters from the army have passed with impunity through the districts which are under your direction that I must necessarily suspect the inhabitants to have connived at it, if not facilitated their escape. I will give the inhabitants ten guineas for the head of any deserter belonging to the Volunteers of Ireland; and five guineas only if they bring him in alive. Ttiey shall be rewarded, though not to that amount, for such deserters as they may secure belonging to any other regiment. Rawdon. After the Revolution, Colonel Rugeley seems to have occupied a respectable position among his neighbors.! His name appears signed to an important presentment Sparks's Life of Washington. tHe was on the list of the proscribed by the Jacksonboro Assembly, 1782, but. with the general amnesty, the stigma of Toryism attaching to his name doubtless lost its force. ILLUSTRATION I. of the Grand Jury at Camden in 1788. From data in our Courthouse, it is inferred that he died about 1799. The old ledger containing accounts of his Clermont store, from 1776 to 1780, is in existence. It shows dealings with such familiar names as Trantham, Drake-ford, Hilton, Kussel, Mickle, Vaughan, Saunders, Duren, Dixon, Kirkland, Fletcher and many others, showing them to have been settlers in that vicinity prior to the Revolution. In 1820 the heirs of Henry Rugeley conveyed "Clermont" to Daniel DeSaussure, who resided there with his family a number of years. No descendants of Colonel Rugeley now live in this county. On November 20th, ...

Book Synopsis The Camden Expedition of 1864 and the Opportunity Lost by the Confederacy to Change the Civil War by : Michael J. Forsyth
Download or read book The Camden Expedition of 1864 and the Opportunity Lost by the Confederacy to Change the Civil War written by Michael J. Forsyth and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-08-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Confederacy had a great opportunity to turn the Civil War in its favor in 1864, but squandered this chance when it failed to finish off a Union army cornered in Louisiana because of concerns about another Union army coming south from Arkansas. The Confederates were so confused that they could not agree on a course of action to contend with both threats, thus the Union offensive advancing from Arkansas saved the one in Louisiana and became known to history as the Camden Expedition. The Camden Expedition is intriguing because of the “might-have-beens” had the key players made different decisions. The author contends that if Frederick Steele, commander of the Federal VII Army Corps, had not received a direct order from General Ulysses S. Grant to move south, disaster would have befallen not only the Army of the Gulf in Louisiana but the entire Union cause, and possibly would have prevented Abraham Lincoln from winning reelection.

Book excerpt: CAMDEN: HISTORICAL ARCHAEOLOGY IN THE SOUTH CAROLINA BACKCOUNTRY represents a unique longitudinal study of 25 years of a single site from the colonial era. It uses the distinctive methodology of historical archaeology to investigate behavior associated with a temporal process of change, thereby illuminating the adaptive behavior of colonists. It is also an important study methodologically because it employs a systematic approach to the investigation of large, complex sites using a combination of documentary and material evidence.

Book Synopsis A Guidebook to South Carolina Historical Markers by :
Download or read book A Guidebook to South Carolina Historical Markers written by and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2021-02-19 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Carolina Historical Marker Program, established in 1936, has approved the installation of more than 1,700 interpretive plaques, each highlighting how places both grand and unassuming have played important roles in the history of the Palmetto State. These roadside markers identify and interpret places valuable for understanding South Carolina's past, including sites of consequential events and buildings, structures, or other resources significant for their design or their association with institutions or individuals prominent in local, state, or national history. This volume includes a concise history of the South Carolina Historical Marker Program and an overview of the marker application process. For those interested in specific historic periods or themes, the volume features condensed lists of markers associated with broader topics such as the American Revolution, African American history, women's history, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. While the program is administered by the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, most markers are proposed by local organizations that serve as a marker's official sponsor, paying its cost and assuming responsibility for its upkeep. In that sense, this inventory is a record not just of places and subjects that the state has deemed worthy of acknowledgment, but of those that South Carolinians themselves have worked to enshrine.
