These "secondary heroines," often the friend or sister of the primary heroine, typically disappear from the action of the novel as the courtship plot progresses, only to return near the conclusion of the action with renewed demands on the reader's attention. Accounting for this persistent pattern, Camden suggests, reveals the cultural work performed by these unusual figures in the early history of the novel. Because she is often a far more vivid character than the heroine of the marriage plot, the secondary heroine inevitably engages the reader's interest in her plight. That the narrative apparently seeks to suppress her creates tension and points to the secondary heroine as a site of contested identity who represents an ideology of womanhood and nationhood at odds with the national ideals represented by the primary heroine, whom the reader is asked to embrace. In showing how the anxiety produced by these ideals is displaced onto the secondary heroine, Camden's study represents an important intervention into the ways in which early novels use character to further ideologies of race, class, sex, and gender.

Kershaw County developed its local economy through plantation agriculture, an enterprise dependent on African slave labor. Distinctive homes were built on rural plantations and in Camden, and a village of well-to-do planters grew up at Liberty Hill. Six Confederate generals claimed the county as their birthplace, and the area also was home to Mary Boykin Chesnut, acclaimed diarist of the Civil War. In their descriptions of Kershaw County in modern times, the Inabinets chronicle how the railroad and later U.S. Highway 1 brought opportunities for the expansion of tourism and led to Camden's development as a popular winter resort for wealthy northerners. Small towns and villages emerged from railroad stops, including Bethune, Blaney (later Elgin), Boykin, Cassatt, Kershaw, Lugoff, and Westville. The influx of new money coupled with local equestrian traditions led to an enthusiasm for polo and the creation of the Carolina Cup steeplechase at the Springdale Course. Aside from early developments in textile manufacturing, industrialization proceeded slowly in Kershaw County. The completion of the Wateree Dam in 1919 gave the region a valuable source of electricity as well as much-needed flood control and a popular new recreational area in Lake Wateree. Despite these incentives for new industry, agricultural ways of life continued to dominate until World War II influenced advances in aviation, communication, and industrialization. In describing these changes, the Inabinets map the circumstances surrounding the building of the DuPont plant which opened in 1950 and the expansion of several other industries in the area. Karen Cook Bell's work is a bold study of the political and social strife of these individuals as they strived for and claimed freedom during the nineteenth century. Bell begins by examining the meaning of freedom through the delineation of acts of self-emancipation prior to the Civil War. Consistent with the autonomy that they experienced as slaves, the emancipated African Americans from the rice region understood citizenship and rights in economic terms and sought them not simply as individuals for the sake of individualism, but as a community for the sake of a shared destiny. Bell also examines the role of women and gender issues, topics she believes are understudied but essential to understanding all facets of the emancipation experience. It is well established that women were intricately involved in rice production, a culture steeped in African traditions, but the influence that culture had on their autonomy within the community has yet to be determined.
