Aviation archaeology has grown significantly within the past ten years and is represented by groups throughout the entire United States and several countries abroad, mainly in Europe. There has always been a strong interest in aviation but the intrigue with old historical aircraft is bringing that interest to the deserts and mountains in search of the remains of rare old aircraft that are seldom seen anymore. Some efforts have been made in the past to recover and restore some of these rare old aircraft wrecks for museums and back to flying status, but new efforts are being made to declare these as historical artifacts and preserve the remains on site. Other times with good luck and especially good planning, the efforts can be very rewarding noting that seldom though are any of these wreck hunts ever very easy which is why the wrecks are still there. Starting in 1911, it was the home to one of the nations first aviation schools, founded by Glenn Curtiss, who pioneered seaplane flight. He trained the nucleus of Americas future air forces there, including Lt. Theodore Ellyson, the first naval aviator. When the United States entered World War I, the government took over the island with plans to build a training center for the nations armed forces. The new army base was named Rockwell Field, and the navy portion was named Naval Air Station San Diego. By 1937, the army had moved out, and the navy became the sole tenant. Today NAS North Island is part of the largest aerospace-industrial complex in the navy and is headquarters for the Naval Air Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet.
