The Colonial prints, mainly religious, done using burin engraving over copper plate and xylography techniques. Volume two reviews in detail the life and art of the 2 most important Mexican engravers: Jose Guadalupe Posada and Manuel Manilla, printmakers at Vanegas Arroyo's press, highlighting the importance of the depiction of the "Calavera" in their graphic work.

Book excerpt: Now available for the first time in English, this volume brings the distinctly Mexican flavor of José Guadalupe Posada's work home to the reader with the striking design of its uncoated pages in the three different colors of the Mexican flag: green, white and red. Interspersed with a varied selection of the artist's engravings--broadsheets, corridos, chapbooks, vignettes, calaveras, games and a long etcetera of miscellaneous material featuring subjects like bullfights, Day of the Dead and crimes of passion--are two long texts by recognized authorities on the work of Posada. One essay deals with Posada's place in the wider tradition of graphic art and engraving, even as it follows his remarkable career from lithographer in the Mexican provinces to "popular" artist representing the quintessential expression of the Mexican Revolution at the beginning of the twentieth century. The other looks at Posada's role as a "professional of the image" in the changing world of publishing for a nascent but fast-growing reading public in late-nineteenth-century Mexico. Finally, the volume contains a biographical chronology of Posada's life and work, a bibliography and more than 600 fascinating reproductions.

Although the Moche had no writing system, they left a vivid artistic record of their beliefs and activities on intricately painted ceramic vessels, several thousand of which are scattered in museums and private collections throughout the world today. Unfortunately, nearly all were looted by grave robbers so their origin and context are unknown. In recent years, however, through a combination of archaeological excavation and stylistic analysis, it has been possible to identify more than 250 painted vessels from the site of San Jose de Moro. To date, this is the largest sample of Moche art from a single place and time. Thus it provides a unique opportunity to identify a distinct sub-style of Moche ceramics, and to assess its range of artistic and technological variation. Moreover, within the sample it is possible to identify multiple paintings by 18 different artists, thus elucidating the range of subject matter that an artist would paint, as well as the variation in the way he would portray the same scene. By discussing and illustrating more than 200 painted vessels from San Jose de Moro, this volume provides insights about a community of ancient Peruvian potters who shared a distinctive painting style and left a fascinating record of their achievement.

Its primary aim is to provide an account of the discovery, excavation, and current interpretation of the three royal tombs that were scientifically revovered from Sipán between 1987 to 1990. We have tried to relate them to the royal tomb that, so tragically, was looted at Sipán before the archaeological work began, and to demonstrate the value of careful archaeological excavation as opposed to clandestime looting"--Preface.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1940, this book charts the origins and evolution of academies of art from the sixteenth century to the first half of the twentieth century. Pevsner expertly explains the political, religious and mercantile forces affecting the education of artists in various countries in Western Europe, and the growing 'academisation' of artistic training that he saw is his own day. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the various historical schools of art instruction and the history of art more generally.
