Se busca conocer cómo se fue desarrollando el cristianismo en la península Ibérica, desde la Antigüedad y la Edad Media, y que nos llega con los militares y religiosos que realizaron la conquista militar y espiritual de México. Es posible que los hispano-romanos hayan sido cristianos desde la época del Nuevo Testamento, por eso es que las comunidades nativas de la Hispania ya eran católicas a la llegada de los visigodos. Los visigodos, quienes profesaban el arrianismo, ante la caída del Imperio romano dominaron a la Hispania católica. Pero los visigodos asumieron el catolicismo cuando Recaredo se convirtió. El fin del dominio visigodo llegó con la invasión árabe en el siglo VIII. Como paralelismo de la historia de México, los conquistadores árabes lograron sacar a los visigodos debido al apoyo que recibieron de las comunidades judeo-hispanas. El territorio que obtuvieron los árabes casi abarcó toda la Península. La Reconquista empezó desde el siglo VIII y concluyó hasta el siglo xv momento en el que el reino de Granada vio el ¬n de sus historias en el importante año de 1492. En ese largo periodo los reinos cristianos –León, Castilla, Aragón, Navarra y Portugal– se fueron formando a lo largo de la Alta y Baja Edad Media. El cristianismo ibérico toma forma de la militancia proveniente de Santiago apóstol, pero también del marianismo. En estas inuencias son claves las órdenes monásticas de Cluny y del cister. Hernán Cortés es un digno hijo de esta cristiandad ibérica, como también lo fueron fray Juan de Zumárraga, primer obispo de México, y fray Martín de Valencia y fray Toribio de Benavente, quienes eran parte de los doce apóstoles.

Brewer Prize While the idea that successful missions needed Indigenous revolts and missionary deaths seems counterintuitive, this book illustrates how it became a central logic of frontier colonization in Spanish North America. Missions Begin with Blood argues that martyrdom acted as a ceremony of possession that helped Jesuits understand violence, disease, and death as ways that God inevitably worked to advance Christendom. Whether petitioning superiors for support, preparing to extirpate Native “idolatries,” or protecting their conversions from critics, Jesuits found power in their persecution and victory in their victimization. This book correlates these tales of sacrifice to deep genealogies of redemptive death in Catholic discourse and explains how martyrological idioms worked to rationalize early modern colonialism. Specifically, missionaries invoked an agricultural metaphor that reconfigured suffering into seed that, when watered by sweat and blood, would one day bring a rich harvest of Indigenous Christianity.

The Lawyer of the Church is an examination of the Mexican clergy’s response to the Reforma through a study of the life and works of Bishop Clemente de Jesús Munguía (1810–68), one of the most influential yet least-known figures of the period. Francisco López de Gómara's monumental Historia de las Indias y Conquista de México was published in 1552 to instant success. Despite being banned from the Americas by Prince Philip of Spain, La conquista fell into the hands of the seventeenth-century Nahua historian Chimalpahin, who took it upon himself to make a copy of the tome. As he copied, Chimalpahin rewrote large sections of La conquista, adding information about Emperor Moctezuma and other key indigenous people who participated in those first encounters. Chialpahin's Conquest is thus not only the first complete modern English translation of López de Gómara's La conquista, an invaluable source in itself of information about the conquest and native peoples; it also adds Chimalpahin's unique perspective of Nahua culture to what has traditionally been a very Hispanic portrayal of the conquest.
