Book excerpt: This is a histological classification of tumours and tumour-like lesions of the exocrine pancreas which also includes those tu- mours showing a mixture of exocrine and endocrine elements. The classification is based principally on standard microscopic observations, but whenever indicated it incorporates diagnosti- cally valuable immunohistological findings. In addition, the most important immunohistological findings which are helpful in cat- egorizing pancreatic tumours are summarised in Table 1. The major guideline of this classification scheme is the group- ing of the pancreatic exocrine tumours according to their biologi- cal behaviour. Thus, the neoplasms are broadly divided into benign (adenoma) and malignant tumours (carcinoma). How- ever, in recent years we have learned that this division is not a sharp but rather a gradual transition. We therefore added a third group which we call "tumours of uncertain malignant potential" representing a borderline category analogous to that recognized for some ovarian tumours. This group includes mucinous cystic tumour, intraductal papillary-mucinous tumour and solid- pseudopapillary tumour. These neoplasms are defined by the grade of dysplasia and/or potential to become malignant. Mucinous cystic tumours of uncertain malignant potential, for instance, exhibit moderate epithelial dysplasia, but do not show severe dysplasia/carcinoma in situ changes, nor carcinomatous invasion of the cyst wall or the adjacent pancreatic tissue. Solid- pseudopapillary tumour has a benign looking histological ap- pearance, but metastases may occur. Biologically, all these neoplasms are primarily slow-growing lesions and have an excel- lent prognosis when adequately treated by complete resection.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes more clinical aspects and concentrates on cancer and precancer of the oral mucosa rather than attempting to cover all benign and malignant tumours of the oral and oropharyngeal tissue. One main emphasis is the significance of the clinical features of the various lesions discussed. Attention is also drawn to those conditions particular to the oral mucosa that may give rise to appearances which are important in differential diagnoses but can be misleading to those who do not have detailed knowledge of the tissue involved. The TNM-classification for malignant tumours of the lip and oral cavity is also included.

Book Synopsis Diagnostic Procedures in Pancreatic Disease by : Peter Malfertheiner
Download or read book Diagnostic Procedures in Pancreatic Disease written by Peter Malfertheiner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development and improvement of new technologies have made pancreatic disease more accessible to diagnosis in the last decade. The cooperation and coordination of experts in the fields of gastro enterology, radiology, biochemistry, immunology, and pathology are necessary if the methods are to be made available and the progress made to be fully exploited. Each of the new methods requires special training, and extensive experience is needed to guarantee high standards in the diagnosis of pancreatic disease. New methods have to be tested carefully against established diagnostic procedures, though at the same time we must be ready to adopt a new approach to diagnosis. The aim of this book is to update the material already published and to focus on the various imaging methods and functional tests currently available, the features specific for each, and their integrative potential in the detection of pancreatic disease. The various pathologic findings are analyzed with reference to the clinical stages of pancreatic disease. As an introduction to the morphological and functional features of acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, and pancreatic cancer revealed by the different imaging methods and functional tests, basic knowledge of the patho-physiological and pathomorphological events is provided by research workers. This knowledge is essential for the understanding and interpretation of the diagnostic findings recorded in pancreatic diseases.

Book Synopsis Histological Typing of Skin Tumours by : P.J. Heenan
Download or read book Histological Typing of Skin Tumours written by P.J. Heenan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although this second edition retains the concise format of the first edition, the number of tumours described has increased considerably, especially in the melanocytic, adnexal, fibrous tissue and lymphoid neoplasms. Care has been taken to avoid needless subclassification, so as to limit the expansion of categories to those fulfilling demonstrable histological criteria. The commentaries remain succint whilst including the major diagnostic points, with reference to relevant immunohistochemical features. All the illustrations have been changed since the first edition. Of particular importance is the fact that close collaboration with the authors of the AFIP Atlas of Tumor Pathology on Melanocytic and Non-melanocytic Tumors of the Skin ensures a consistent approach to the classification.
Book Synopsis Uncommon Pancreatic Neoplasms by : Paolo Pederzoli
Download or read book Uncommon Pancreatic Neoplasms written by Paolo Pederzoli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-05 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncommon tumors of the pancreas are of increasing interest for clinicians: cross imaging techniques development makes it possible to detect small lesions in the pancreatic gland of asymptomatic patients, and in the last decades a more detailed and specific pathological classification definitivelyopened an unexpected world of more or less rare pancreatic tumors. As a matter of fact, nowadays most surgical procedures deal with these so called uncommon pancreatic tumors such as cystic, endocrine and others unfrequent histotypes, and many patientsexperiencing an accidental discovery of this type of tumor need therefore a specialistic evaluation. The concept behind this volume is the need to give the correct clinical relevance to these “uncommon” tumors, that are ranked at the first place among pancreatic tumors, and that are definitively curable with a multimodal approach. Aim of the book is therefore to get clinicians closer to these pathologies, describing their complexity and the current state of the art in diagnostic, therapeutic and pathological classification strategy, thus providing them with the tools for a modern and updated clinical management of these patients.
Book Synopsis Histological Typing of Endocrine Tumours by : E. Solcia
Download or read book Histological Typing of Endocrine Tumours written by E. Solcia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition updates the "WHO Classification of Endocrine Tumours" proposed in 1980 and incorporates many new tumour entities and pertinent concepts that have developed since that time. It is the result of a collaborative effort between 9 pathologists from different countries, in addition to informal contributions and discussions by many other colleagues. In particular, efforts have been made to integrate into the fundamental backbone of the histologic classification a number of prognostic and functional parameters now essential for appropriate diagnosis and clinicopathologic evaluation of endocrine tumours.

The authors include not only pathologists but also a urologist and a basic scientist. The second edition - containing 146 colour photographs - is considerably more extensive than its predecessor. A number of new entities, unrecognized in 1980, are included: prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia, which is commonly associated with carcinoma and may also be seen in a biopsy for elevated PSA; basal cell carcinoma; small cell carcinoma; paracrine-endocrine elements; variants of carcinoma; and stromal sarcoma. The criteria for the diagnosis of carcinoma have been expanded, including the minimal criteria. The Gleason grading system, based on growth pattern, is presented in detail. The WHO grading system, based on nuclear anaplasia and glandular differentiation, is more clearly defined.
