Book Synopsis Alfred Loisy and the Making of History of Religions by : Annelies Lannoy

This book was released on 2020-08-10 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph studies the professionalization of History of religions as an academic discipline in late 19th and early 20th century France and Europe. Its common thread is the work of the French Modernist priest and later Professor of History of religions at the Collège de France, Alfred Loisy (1857-1940), who participated in many of the most topical debates among French and international historians of religions. Unlike his well-studied Modernist theology, Loisy’s writings on comparative religion, and his rich interactions with famous scholars like F. Cumont, M. Mauss, or J.G. Frazer, remain largely unknown. This monograph is the first to paint a comprehensive picture of his career as a historian of religions before and after his excommunication in 1908. Through a contextual analysis of publications by Loisy and contemporaries, and a large corpus of private correspondence, it illuminates the scientification of the discipline between 1890-1920, and its deep entanglement with religion, politics, and society. Particular attention is also given to the role of national and transnational scholarly networks, and the way they controlled the theoretical and institutional frameworks for studying the history of religions.

Book Synopsis Nietzsche on Time and History by : Manuel Dries
Download or read book Nietzsche on Time and History written by Manuel Dries and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-11-06 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1885 Nietzsche insisted that from now on philosophy was only acceptable ‘as the most general form of history, as an attempt somehow to describe Heraclitean becoming and to abbreviate it into signs.’ Taking this remark as a starting point, the aim of this volume is to examine the intricate relationship between Nietzsche’s philosophy of time and his philosophy of history. The questions that arise include: What are the new conceptions of time that Nietzsche has to offer? What kind of historian was Nietzsche himself? What kinds of temporalized histories and historicized philosophies did he write or fail to write? This collection of essays, written by fourteen academics including eminent figures such as John Richardson, Raymond Geuss, Lawrence J. Hatab, and Andrea Orsucci, constitute essential reading for specialists of Nietzsche, and will also appeal to a larger audience of intellectual historians, philosophers and others who are interested in the development of modern thought.

Download or read book The Oxford History of Historical Writing written by Stuart Macintyre and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 4 of The Oxford History of Historical Writing offers essays by leading scholars on the writing of history globally from 1800 to 1945. Divided into four parts, it first covers the rise, consolidation, and crisis of European historical thought, and the professionalization and institutionalization of history. The chapters in Part II analyze how historical scholarship connected to various European national traditions. Part III considers the historical writing of Europe's 'Offspring': the United States, Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Brazil, and Spanish South America. The concluding part is devoted to histories of non-European cultural traditions: China, Japan, India, South East Asia, Turkey, the Arab world, and Sub-Saharan Africa. This is the fourth of five volumes in a series that explores representations of the past from the beginning of writing to the present day, and from all over the world. This volume aims at once to provide an authoritative survey of the field, and especially to provoke cross-cultural comparisons.

Book Synopsis Jewish War under Trajan and Hadrian by : William Horbury
Download or read book Jewish War under Trajan and Hadrian written by William Horbury and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-18 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two major Jewish risings against Rome took place in the years following the destruction of Jerusalem - the first during Trajan's Parthian war, and the second, led by Bar Kokhba, under Hadrian's principate. The impact of these risings not only on Judaea, but also on Cyrene, Egypt, Cyprus and Mesopotamia, is shown by accounts in both ancient Jewish and non-Jewish literature. More recently discovered sources include letters and documents from fighters and refugees, and inscriptions attesting war and restoration. Historical evaluation has veered between regret for a pointless bloodbath and admiration for sustained resistance. William Horbury offers a new history of these risings, presenting a fresh review of sources and interpretations. He explores the period of Jewish war under Trajan and Hadrian not just as the end of an era, but also as a time of continuity in Jewish life and development in Jewish and Christian origins.
