Une nouvelle légitimité politique conduit aux révolutions américaine et française mais la pensée contre-révolutionnaire résiste. Les œuvres les plus anciennes ne sont pas démodées. C'est dans ce fond commun de la pensée jusqu'au XIXe siècle que se trouve l'origine de tous les débats actuels.
