This comprehensive book traces the development of this pioneering and emblematic organisation and invites you to discover the key moments and challenges it has faced. In the aftermath of the Second World War, the Council of Europe was established in Strasbourg with the objective of promoting and safeguarding human rights, democracy and the rule of law throughout Europe. It has created a common democratic and legal area by drawing up more than 200 conventions covering all aspects of daily life. At its heart is also the European Court of Human Rights, guardian of fundamental freedoms and a flagship institution whose judgments are binding on the member states. Find out more about the Court’s landmark decisions, major reforms and how it has responded to changes in society. The Council of Europe has forged close ties with the European Union, working in tandem on many projects to strengthen justice, safety and human rights. This work analyses the complementary and competitive nature of this strategic partnership and the expectations around it. Throughout the history of the Council of Europe, there have been many great achievements but also crises and controversies. This book provides a detailed analysis of the turbulent times the Organisation has faced, from integrating new members to dealing with internal challenges, political pressures and external conflicts, and delves into the strategies it has adopted to address them. History of the Council of Europe, 75 years of European co-operation is essential reading for anyone wishing to understand the development of this key European institution, its achievements, trials and tribulations, and the impact it has had on Europe and its people. Book Synopsis The Ecumenical Movement & the Making of the European Community by : Lucian Leustean
Download or read book The Ecumenical Movement & the Making of the European Community written by Lucian Leustean and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Community has largely been considered a predominantly secular project, bringing together the economic and political realms, while failing to mobilise the public voice and imagination of churchmen and the faithful. Drawing on a wide range of archival sources, this is the first study to assess the political history of religious dialogue in the European Community. It challenges the widespread perception that churches started to engage with European institutions only after the 1979 elections to the European Parliament, by detailing close relations between churchmen and high-ranking officials in European institutions, immediately after the 1950 Schuman Declaration. Lucian N. Leustean demonstrates that Cold War divisions between East and West, and the very nature of the ecumenical movement, had a direct impact on the ways in which churches approached the European Community. He brings to light events and issues which have not previously been examined, such as the response of churches to the Schuman Plan, and the political mobilisation of church representations in Brussels, Strasbourg and Luxembourg. Leustean argues that the concept of a 'united Europe' has been impeded by competing national differences between religious and political institutions, having a long-standing legacy on the making of a fragmented European Community.
Book Synopsis The Informal Construction of Europe by : Lennaert van Heumen
Download or read book The Informal Construction of Europe written by Lennaert van Heumen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informal dimensions of European integration have received limited academic attention to date, despite their historical and contemporary importance. Particularly studies in European integration history, while frequently mentioning informal processes, have as yet rarely conceptualised the study of informality in European integration, and thus fail usually to systematically analyse conditions, impact and consequences of informal action. Including case studies that discuss both successful and failed examples of informal action in European integration, this book assembles cutting-edge research by both early-career and more experienced scholars from all over Europe to fill this lacuna. The chapters of this volume offer a guide to the study of informality and show how informality has impacted European integration history and the functioning of the EC/EU as well as other European organisations in a variety of ways. Reflecting the diversity of studies within this burgeoning field of research, within and across several academic disciplines, the book approaches the informal dimensions of European integration from different disciplinary, methodological and thematic angles. This book will be of key interest to students and scholars of European integration, EU politics/studies, European politics, European Union history, and more broadly to comparative politics and international relations.
